centaurs kick ass!
...long time no posts from me... haven't had time to paint. :/ I made this centaur today, whaddayathink? I posted some quick sketch of
this in the wip forum yesterday since I had problems with the horse anatomy. (this is my first attempt at making a horse pic) ....it still sucks, but what can you do? oh well, at least the mood of the pic turned out ok.
crit/comments needed!!! this took me a whole 3 hours!

Nice and moody!

Few crits..

The forearms and hands of the Centaur are off...I'd beef up the forearms, or shape them a litte more so they taper more radically near the wrist, and make the hands bigger...nothing wimpifies a creature more than small, shapeless hands.

The pose could be improved dramatically on the Centaur if he were looking at that guy on the ground.

Great mood tho!

Great colors, the light is awesome!

I think the only thing I see that is sort of off is the left arm, the triceps area and the forearm and the knuckles. The triceps has that line separating it and the brachialis (the muscle between the biceps good ol’ Hogarth ). It looks sort of unnatural. The forearm just needs more definition, I wouldn't make it any wider. And the knuckles; the back of the left hand is missing them. I think others then those things it's an incredible picture.

love the colors. very good so far..

but i think you really need to focus more on the emotion, and movement in the picture. stop worrieing about anatomy for a bit, and spend a little time trying to add some movement. right now (and i recognize that it is not done), the charactors look like manicans, no movement and blank faces.... I htink you should try to make it wall look like the centur is someing at the dude, and the dude is freaking out and cowaring... maybe if you put some smoke around the feet, and leaves flying up in the air? also, the centaur's face si really blank- and he isn't looking at the victim.

VERY good painting so far.... i just think you should focus on these things to make it a true masterpiece .

Geoman is very correct, your skills with the drawing itself are fine, and the anatomy is great, but the design just seems completely off... a lot of people take a while to realize how to use design... here's I figured I'd break my rule and actually draw on somone else's picture...

as you can see the picture leads the eye across the red lines, and you end up in the center from almost every point... once you get there however, there's NOTHING there to keep your interest... which makes the drawing seem kind of tired... like "ok, what's supposed to happen now?" instead of creating any kind of tension....

to fix that you can do a couple of things,

1) you could put the focus of the drawing there, have the centaurur holding a spear, lounging at the guy...

2) you could completely redo the composition somehow on the guy or the centaur, by changing their pose and positioning completely....

I'd like to draw you a replacement, but I'm just not that good on a wacom... heh maybe one day in charcoal

Geoman2k and Shahar2k are correct. (What's with the 2k bit? you guys related?)

The movement and focus does indeed culminate at the point which Shahar2k determined.. I would also suggest a spear.. and fixing the eyes of the centaur to be looking at the soldier.. I really like this painting. It has a cool mythological feel.. the colours and of course the subject matter.

thanks for the positive comments
the image was and still is a bit unfinished,
the forearms were my main concern along with the horse's anatomy which I am powerless to make right:/ well, I meddled a bit with the arms and such, here's the new version:

woohoo.

Without the spear, the most dangerous part of the centaur are the hooves. So the shield would be alot lower than that. With the spear, the guy has a reason to hold the shield up.

The pose is super awkward...I would really really suggest making the centaur at *least* looking toward the guy on the ground..will improve things tremendously!

Other than that..looking great!

ok, I corrected the pic a bit. you guys are right, the position IS awkward and there's lack of action. but poor sketch and quick working without further thinking is to blame. and also, I just added the man on the ground from another pic I was painting at the same time. but hey, now the centaur has a crude axe and he's looking the right way
you can see the contrast from the first pic,
as it sucks even more than the more finished one.
