This is the wizened wizard in his lab, with his friendly devil-dragon friend, Spark.

Recent fixes: Lighting and shadows on the Wizard. 5-22-01.

Hey I like this a lot!
It's very moody and the atmosphere is terrific! The only crit i can think of is that i think that the wizard would look a bit better if he is taller and skinnier... His bottom part is a bit short and thick IMHO and his pose is a bit aggressive...

Wow Nuke! That's awesome, I can't really find anything bad about it. It's detailed, but not crowded, .....nice sheen on the backing glass too, that's hard to get right.

really nice... the only thing i don't like is the mages headgear. The background on the left seems a bit strange though.. the bottle with the green liquid seems to have some old style comic texture.. but great work

Your just pounding these out! And the cool thing is there all really good. Be sure to pay attension to your light sources though, I'd like to see some lighter lights.

This is really cool. I saw your other pic, and then saw this one.... both are pretty much straight drawings. Can we see some different poses/perspectives?? (not saying you cant, your work is great)

Later,
Masamune

Everyone..thanks for the comments and crits!

OK I updated the lighting on this! Basically, gave the wizard better shadowing to match the lighting.

Morgoth:Ah yes I am used to seeing skinnier Wizards too, but I wanted to make it a tad different..hee's got boots on too, instead of sandals or leggings.

Etah:Hey thanks! I like lots of little things to look at, even tho this definitely took longer than my other stuff...course this was an older drawing that I wanted to see painted. Yeah that sheen...took me a couple tries..I hope it still looks like a roundish, semi-spherical window.

Dives: Yeah the headgear is to hold up his spectables, sort of a different take on normal specs, besides, he has to wear specs while practicing spells so he doesn't sear his retinas. Not sure what ya mean by the background to the left?

Dryfire: Thanks! I wanted to make a little friend for the Wizard, so I merged a devil\demon type thing and a small, red dragon to make a Devil-Dragon. Thought it might be fun.

Jucas: Hehe..well I am getting my reel together and finishing up some older artwork in addition to creating new stuff. Yer right I need to work on my light sourcing...this is something I am trying to better incorporate into drawings..I have a hard time wanting to cover certain things up, ya know.

Masamune: Thanks..hey you saw the Orc right? Yeah I wasn't trying to do crazy poses here..but I will be doing different poses in the future...sometimes I just start doodling, but if I do that, the poses tend to end up straight on...so I plan to do some cooler poses in the near future..will attention paid more to lighting as well from all the good crits I've gotten.

Take it easy..

That lab is WAAAAAYYY to neat to be a wizards lab, grunge it up a bit. Wizards are notorios for being slobs. Excellent picture though.

I like it but, um, well, I do have a crit. It looks very black, like it would look great as a line art only. As a painting, there seems to be no room for the color to show through and is, IMHO too dark because of that.

Sorry, man. Cool concept, though, and I certainly couldn't draw better w/out reference.

Also, the arm grabbing the cane--the shoulder looks funky.

only thing i dislike is the fact that u made your wizard quit a thug there. he diesn't need magic - he can kick ass by beating things up. he should have looked more skinny or fat. not such a big guy. but i prejudice.

good work

Hi there..

S4SB: Brutish legs..yes he's not a thin Wizard. He's had a steady diet of eel spleens and bat lungs.

Patrick: Yeah, I could easily put more junk about...old eel spleen wrappings and such, little blobs of goo on the workspace, etc. That would add some character as well..maybe I'll do that if I revisit this particular piece.

Armadon: Thanks!

SpiralEye: Yup..tis a bit dark..the lighting is minimal, and what lighting there is emits from behind the Wizard, so he's got core shadows on the front...a tad dark...but any brighter and it'd look weird..IMHO.

Topeira: I would not call him a thug, but yep, he's not too skinny...course, he is inside all the time, and quite pale and not in the best condition. I wanted to make a mage that wasn't the typical emaciated type, hence the slightly different body type. If you think he might kick your ass physically, well that is all the more reason not to mess with him since he casts spells, too. Also, this could be a character that changed classes late in his life...perhaps he was once a warrior who decided to learn to be a Wizard...learning 1st level spells at 35 or so (late in life back then).
