That's just insane, you are one of my favorite artists on this board. Your story makes me afraid to try and get into art school, I don't take rejection too well

I love this image, your animal paintings are so cool. I love to paint animals as well, more than people I can't wait to see more of your work.

What school were you applying for?

I agree with Jezebel, makes me afraid myself compared what Gecko has been doing, I am nothing.

This image is pretty good.. i really like the head and neck area, i can almost feel his skin. The reflected light is bothering me a bit- it shouldn't be this strong with such a clouded sky and diffused light.

and you're cool, just in case the message didn't get through yet.

Wow, im really surprised you didnt get in !
I know it must be hard on you but dont let it mess you up.
For as long as i've been here, I've considered you as a top notch artist and always check your threads and am never disappointed by what I see.
I think that the only reason the school didnt accept you is that you type of art isnt what they're looking for, doesnt mean you're not good enough...thats what I personally think. Dont let it get to you and your art, you're an awesome artist and im sure that you're still learning new things everyday. Just keep focused on your art and one day that school is gonna regret not taking you in, I am sure of it

So whatever you do, dont get depressed, male it your goal to become the best you can be. We're all behind you here !

oh yeah, post more too, I miss your art hehe

Cheers

suprised I'm

sorry to hear that
is it for sure or do you have still a change to be accepted?(-->''it's pretty sure'' means not ''sure'')

what did you have to do at the test?

you are great talent so keep it up
good luck for your next try mista

EDIT: message shocked me that I forget your picture

I like the bottom lightning but can't tell where it comes from--reflecting light woudn't be so strong-would it?

maybe it's my gamma but for me the dino lacks on contrast

That really sucks, Gecko. They're idiots for not throwing themselves at your feet and begging you to study at their college. Grr... maybe I should go there and beat some sense into them ;(

As to the picture... wonderful as all your dinos are... great light and wonderful colours!

Sounds like you may have had a problem with your portfolio. It's the only thing the school has to judge your work by. Schools are really looking for a diverse portfolio with everything from figure drawing to still lifes to sculpture with every media from conte to oil to peanut butter. Don't give up yet, when I was in school I knew a lot of great artists who were initially passed over because of weak portfolios, but they persisted and got on the 'waiting list' and managed to get in anyway. Then once you're in, you can prove yourself.

Cant believe that, youre really good.
I never considered going to an art school after I quit my tech. college., Im the kind of guy who wants to do everything on his own, even if its the hardest way.
Dont know if I get a chance, but I believe in it no matter what comes. Hope your will is evenly strong and you have enough motivation to keep rollin. I really like your pictures and my jaw dropped more than once, looking at your pics. Ive always thought you are freelancer or so...

And heres something for you art-school guys:

Gecko,

I teach at an art school. Like I tell my students, the prospect of getting into an art school has less to do initially with talent than it does with your income and contacts. Your rejection could even go so far as being a digital issue (oh he paints in Photoshop blah, blah blah) The old adage, "First it's who you know, then what you know" still applies. Here's a secret, in school instruction can only carry you so far. The most important thing for learning in art school is how you spend your time outside of the classroom. My suggestion, apply to a different school and don't sweat it. Look at it very simply, any school that doesn't take you is not were you are supposed to be. There is always another option, especially when it comes to schools. Remember, they want your money.

Regards

nice dino pics gecko! Sad to hear about the art school, like janne said, it doesn't make sense. So, then take it this way, if the school is stupid enough to say so, it's probably for the best anyway

Sorry to hear that Gecko. They must just be looking for something else. Either that or they are jealous of you talent because you have some very nice paintings there.

Maybe you should try coming to the states to go to school?

Good luck.

??? What are they on crack?
Maybe they are the the type that are ignorant about digital painting.
One misinformed teacher once told a friend of mine that all digital art is just clip art and photo manipulation.
At one time artists looked down on the likes of Norman Rockwell because to them he was a mere illustrator and his work was not considered art.

Now that's just messed up. You have to show that you are a good(talented) artist, in order to learn art?
What's the point then? Is this some kind of Elite Art School where each person that graduates is handed a diploma by God?

I want to see the work of the people who got in, and then I want to see the work of the people who graduated from this school.

Did they offer any critiques about your work as to why it didn't pass?

In all honesty, I can see some things wrong with your images, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING that would determine you are incapable of learning what someone has to teach. I think this says alot for the school, either they want people who are "easy" to teach and have a similar style to what they want to produce, or they are a strict fine arts school (traditional media only)

I'm with everyone else, don't let it get you down. You've got talent, and keep up the good work it will pay off.

Was part of the requirements to do dino's?

Sorry to hear that. On what department you applied to? What I have learned from doing those assignments is that they look something particular style in those works. Very narrow sighted. You have to read the judgement basis what they expect. For example graphics design, i think they want 30% insanity, 30% inventivity, 30%originality and last 10% something what the guy who created the assignment would have done.

Also mastering traditional media in every aspect is needed. It's never about your stuff or your goodness. It's about you doing right things they want.

Damn you're good, I would hire you anytime. Good luck next time. (and remember to practise with trad. also..)

Sadly, digital stuff, as well as comic-style art is extremely frowned upon at traditional art schools. I guess they're afraid of the few gabe reisers (you dont deserve capital letters on your name gabe) out there that rip off a pic easily and put it in their portfolio. Digital stuff is greatly encouraged in design school, but fine art is really different. Was your entire portfolio digital? I'd like to see the breakdown of everything you had in there, so maybe some of us could rationalize this bad experience to you.

Although, some schools are just stupid, there is always that :) You are a fantastic artist and illustrator, and I really don't know what their problem is. It might be what I mentioned, or perhaps not...we'll never know I guess.

PS: If it makes you feel any better, I got rejected for a 2-year "computer graphics" course in Toronto, and instead I got into a 3-year design course in Ottawa and am now an art director for a company in California and own a new local design firm...so...I wouldn't let it get me down if I were you Geck...you're much too talented for that, and great things will happen for you :)

That is some really nice work. I don't see why they wouldn't admit you into the school (whichever school it is). The only thing I can see wrong with that first dino pic is that there is too much light being reflected on the front of the legs whereas the light source is coming from behind the dino. Otherwise... wow!

There were certain assignments that had to be done in order to apply for the school, no portfolio. The problem with just applying for the next school is that this is finland we're talking about.

Thanks for the kind words, if anything, I'm now more determined. janne & klaivu, good luck for the next round.

Hmmm...what artschool "level" was it you wanted to go to? Do you have any prior art edu? I think we have similar schoolsystems is Sweden and Findland. Here its almost impossible to get into the higher accademys if you havent got a few years in a smaller artschool first. (Folkhgskola for example, dont know what its called in finish =D)
