Wheyhey!!!
Ok, so I haven't been posting anything lately.
Been drawing alot though. But all that
crap has been discarded or just left undone.
But this was done in 2 days. (approx. 5h work)
Have I made any progress?
Finally got it done.
Here's the remake of the current picture.
I applied some of your advices a lot.
Hopefully this is a bit better version.

Good compostition. I was thinking of a similar lines. Here is a few suggestions
you are going to have to make that globe look more like a globe : shading.
Create more depth through different tonal ranges for areas closer to the viewer and farther from the viewer
lastly perhaps rotate the position to the right to make most use ot overlapping
Hope it helps

I dont know about progress... I cant remember..
Keep in mind that whenever you do anything creative, you are making progress... In a subtle way you will make improvements all the time, it is hard to notice these things. Sometimes you'll realise, and do things a new way and BOOM, you improve instantly or a lot more noticeably... it's frustrating that you cant see your subtle progress.
To be prefectly honest the colours, especially the cyan, and the blue are quite gawdy... it is typical of beginners work, the tendency to splash down every colour possible, and to render without the consideration of the colour design of a picture. A sort of "I've finished with blue, now where can I put some red". It just doesn't work that way... it needs simple planning, but I admit can also rarely work well by accident.
Think about what you want the pic to be about, whats the mood? whats the action? whats the portrayal, the purpose?
I would suggest that before beginning a painting, that you pic a few (maybe 3) main colours that are applicable to the above questions.. if it is a sad picture or calming, then blue, bloodthirsty then red or passion too, yellow is generally cowardice, black death, white life or heaven, purple royalty or extravagance etc... there are more..
You can read up on the colour theory... find out what sort of aesthetic and pyschological elements of colour theory you can use as an artist.
One other thing that I noticed was that some of the colours are too saturated... meaning they are the purest form of hue, the most intense blue, the reddest red etc.
Lots of oversaturation in beginners work is also a common trait. It tends to make those colours look gawdy.. especially cyan. A picture needs somewhere for the eye to rest, at the moment because of the intensity of the colour, the oversaturation, A viewers eye gets bombarded with colour information, like shining a torch in your eye or looking at the sun, its just too much and you have to squint.
I would suggest that to remedy your saturation problem, that you desaturate your image a bit, and discover the difference that this makes to your image. It should let the eye rest a bit more now, and identify with other elements of you picture..the content.
Play around with the IMAGE> ADJUST> HUE/SATURATION> ... now play around with the hue, the saturation and the lightness... see some of the different effects this has on your image, both visually and in terms of mood and content. try ychecking the colorize feature too, just muck around.
I hope that helps a bit. I dont mean to be harsh at all... you asked for crit.
anyway, let me know how it goes, and just ask within this thread if you dont understand any of this babble I'm spouting! |

Hi there..
Good for you for drawing and painting..improvement only comes with practice..
Also congratulations on trying to paint without lines (outlines)...I won;t go into color here, since that's been covered, and quite well, but I'd say you need to work on drawing the figure more before painting too much..I mean, it can be overwhelming to learn drawing and painting at the same time..I'd definitely study anatomy as much as you can...but congrats on that pose..you've tackled a doozy.
I would try working on the figure, draw all kinds of poses..draw everything as if you were going to build it out of basic shapes like cylinders, boxes, spheres, etc. so you get good volume and form, then concentrate on muscles and all that...
Otherwise...keep up the artwork. It's a great place to get feedback, eh?

Thanks guys/girls(???)
Your replies been very useful.
Basement Bound: Thanks. Still have to practice more that shadowing and light.
Collosimo: I'll try mix with the color tones
a bit and see how it will go. Have to admit
though that i had to read that reply of
yours few times. But thanks a lot. I have
always had troubles to make the picture more
alive and then mix the backround in it.
NukleoN:Lineart work has not been my area.
Like more to make these realistic pics.
But maybe someday when i need to expand into
other styles, lineart could be it. For
the anatomy, i know it doesnt fit right. But
I never went on to any art schools, just
been drawing since i was little. But thanks
for the tips. I'll use 'em.
Overall: Practice, practice...
I'll remake the pic sometime in next week.
(hey! Weekends for relaxing right? )
Again, thanks all. |

Hey no problem.. my reply was pretty big... I sorta got going and just didn't stop. What else are we here for though? I always try my best to help.
Those other comments also made me think.. yes, anatomy, I wasn''t going to mention it in my crit, mainly because I had said too much already.
Look forward to seeing the update. |
