Hey!
here we go:
not too bad overall - but there are some things you might want to improve:
* make some sort of background - white is always so ... hmm ... white. try to make a bg that supports your foreground - doesn't have to be something defined, but even if it's just a gradient, try to make it go along with your fg.
* try to define the cape better. right now it looks like a quite undefined grey mass. try to think where the light would come from and shade it accordingly. you might have to make some selections with the magic wand or lasso tool to give you some ahrd edges and definition.
* the red is too saturated for my taste - but then again, it's a vampire, maybe he likes the 'bloodcolored' jacket
* the shading on the shoes might need some improvement too
* and since the character is shaded, maybe you can give it a shadow too after you put in a background - kinda ties him down to the floor!
but - great improvement - keep going
cheers

My advice would be to try and shade/highlight with something other than black and white. I was telling this same thing to someone the other day. Take a black or red shirt, lay it on the ground and study the colors you see.
Also like Loki mentioned about the shirt, it's too highly saturated. Try and use more muted tones. Take a look at http://www.goodbrush.com for examples of what I mean. |

Do NOT colour in someone else's linework unless you ask them if you can do so first.
EVER. |

...just like my green monkey who someone thought wasn't green... subtlety is key, some things don't need to be "in your face"...
Then again, I've been known to undersaturate since forever...

Hey stneil,
One day, I believe that you might just surprise people. With the amount of practice you seem to be putting into learning how to draw/paint, it won't take long to get good.
Many of the people here have gotten to where they are at over the course of the existance of this forum. Only a few years.
I remember that many did rather crappy stuff when they first posted.. of course everyone did very 'elfwood' sounding responses back then. So maybe they didn't feel it was that bad ;P
Vast majority was always buggin' Dhabih for his new tutorial (which still hasn't come, haha)
It wasn't until Craig Mullins came by, that people seemed to get their eyes opened to a new way of painting in photoshop...
Anyway,
What I'm saying is - don't let setbacks discourage you.
So you messed up in the past, big deal. At least you apologized.
Seems many here are too holy to admit they ever did anything wrong themselves. What fucking liars
I can't remember the address, but there is a place on the web with freely available linart you can color. I'm sure someone has it.
You can also grab some of the lineart that frequently gets posted which people encourage others to give a shot.
That way you don't excite the petty little people who have nothing better to do than whine and bitch.
Man, I feel better now. I hope you do too! |

If you don't have to common courtesy to get the artist's permission than you're doing something horribly wrong. What doesn't offend someone might really offend someone else. How can you say it's fine if it's not your work?
I'm not saying this particular artist would care, but a lot of them do, so there it is, your answer. Enjoy. |

I believe that it's not cool.......
and I actually had to think about it while...
My punk rock side of me wans to say
" Hey, fuck it, I'd paint over the Mona Lisa
if ya let me!!!" but the artist in me says
" It's the way the artist wanted it, if he/she wants it to be colour they'd do it
themselves with a crayon if they had to."
What I mean is, Ask first, Some people
like they're art the way it is...... |

If you post a B&W I can't see why you would care if someone colored it. Its not like it matters at all...we're artists, lighten up, if you get offended by that sorta thing you go throw yourself agaist the wall cause we don't needja. |

::Begin Rant::
Now I'm not here to protect anybody or say anyone is right or wrong, but all the hostile posts are getting VERY old. I really think some people need to stop being such asses about this. It seems to me that he's trying here. He's definitely no Mullins but then how many people at this forum are? If anybody else in this place had colored a piece of random line art nobody would have said a thing. Just get over it... please.
The least everyone can do is to keep in mind that "if you can't say something nice (or constructive) then don't say anything at all". I think he's got the point by now...

I just state my opinion, I could've said something a lot worse. I personally would not at all mind if someone coloured my lineart (and many have) if they ask me, becuase it's just being polite. Going ahead and just colouring on it and posting it for everyone to see when only half of it is yours is rude I think. But, take it how you want it, just a matter of artist etiquette. |

Scoop... I TOTALLY agree with you, I really do. Like I said, I'm not picking sides here and I'm not saying he was right. But do you think that if someone else (one of the better artists like Francis or Chapel) had posted some anonymous line art that a big deal would have been made out of it? I sure don't... but I could be wrong. |

Well this is the only time I haven't been too lazy to post about it :) I guess there's bad stigma considering its a stneil post. |

I think Loki gave a good crit so I won't add to it. but............
--side rant--
Even though I think asking if you can colour someone's lineart is the best thing to do. and stneil777's response is a bit unrespectifull. It is very low to try and attack someone by paying out their art skills (especialy when the person is actuialy trying to improve and not attempting to pass of other's work as their own or simmilar). It doesn't matter how much you dislike someone, It's a low blow and I don't think this place needs that sort of thing. |

Did I mention someone's art skills? Nothing I've said today is "stneil-specific". I really don't see any low blows here, unless you're talking about someone else.

Sc00p, he wasn't referring to you, I think he meant Dthind..
Dthind: that is really unneccessary, Stneill is a lot nicer now.. he has made an effort.. we dont need you to stir things up.. please.. do we really want another whole lots of mess? I totally agree with Jezebel.
Only post in this thread if you are goin to comment on Stneil's artwork.. thats waht he posted for, crits.. so do him the courtesy..
Stneill777: I think you are improving.. this pic has some definite enhancements from the thingsI have seen in the past. This seems a lot more refined.. good effort.
I think that the blue reflection on the right needpad is too strong... it should be a lot more subtle.. Think about why you used blue in the first place.. well it is a reflection and it is a kind of generalised idea that most objects that are shiny will reflect a ground and the sky.. hence the blue.. however you need to perhaps inlude the sky into you pic, so add a background.. so that the reflection has an environment from which it came.. understand?
Every reflection originates from the surrounding environment.. so if you had a red sky, the reflection would be red.. and whatever else..
The point is that your particular blue reflection on the kneepad is not realistic.. simply because it doesn't accurately relate to its surrounding environment.. rarely is the sky that intensely and brightly blue.. it needs to be more like a real sky reflection, so destaurate it a bit and change the intensity of it, because the sky is not so powerful as to produce such a bright reflection on the kneepad. I hope you understood that.. |

next time i have to keep it in mind, thanx for the ones who accually gave contructive critisizm.
Don't worry i do not plan on lowering my self to there standards and fight. |
