Well, this is my first time posting here, so I figured I'd just throw this pic up for crits and comments. I painted it using Painter, which is a new program for me and I'm still trying to learn it. The painting took about 20 hours to do. I'm not usually into the whole "historical painting" scene, being much more fantasy sci-fi oriented, but this was done as part of a series of pictures for the instruction manual of a computer game I'm currently working on. So, please, go ahead and rip it apart if you want. Any comments are appreciated.

Hey, that's pretty darn cool... especially considering it's a new medium and subject for you. I really love the glow on that guys cigarette... but I can't help but feel like he's not hiding very well considering the barrel of his gun is sticking out a good 6-8 inches But I love his expression.

Yeah, wacom tablet all the way. The tablet is another new thing for me. I can't believe I was only using a mouse before. And the first time I tried a tablet I hated it for some insanely moronic reason and didn't try it again until recently. But now I'm totally hooked and there's no going back.

Oh, yeah, and Commandos 2? Good guess, but no. The game I'm working on is not just WW2.

Hrm, the guns seem accurate to me. I imagine it only makes or breaks it for the 0.01% of people who are WW2 gun buffs or something. What's the allied soldier holding, an M1? The tank is definately accurate, as well as the uniforms. Either way, I think the execution is more important in a piece like this.

Anyways, this picture absolutely rocks (but I already told ya that!). I love the color scheme -- portrays that dark, grey, moody feel. The lighting is also excellent, especially on the faces of the two most prominent soldiers. Never mind the details like the wrinkles in the clothing.

My favorite part has to be the cigarette tip though -- it really add a little splash of color that draws your eye to it and makes it that much more interesting.

Nice.. all the values are a bit confusing though... maybe too much variation.. I dunno exactly.

Aerial perspective... you've done well there.

Oh... just noticed..

The tank treads are out of alignment..perpective is a bit whack there.

looks like the front left tread is at a different angle, and too far forward.

Squeal: Cool image I like the color a lot.
Very interesting composition. Did you use any photographs because those wrinkles in the cloths look great.

Nice work; my only complaint would be that neither of the guns are accurate. Details like that really make or break the feel of historical pieces.

great piece!! freaking cool.

i have 3 comments -
1)i dont like the position of the legts on the walking soldier closer to the viewer. he seems like he's going to the left but his body and head are pointing to a direction more to the front.
2)the bricks on the floor have a lil perspective probs i believe. like they dont tilt like they should... or is it just me.
3)if u r doing this image for a computer game that will probably brag about it's aunthicity than i think being accurate about the rifles is important. plus, the gun that the closer soldier walking is holding looks croocked. liquidish...

besides- awsome work. i never get closer to this quality in painter. i find it hard to control

Thanks for all the comments, everybody. Yeah, I noticed a lot of those problems, such as the tank treads being a bit off, but felt too lazy to change 'em thinking, "maybe its just me and no one else will notice". Ha. I'll definately go in and make some of those changes. As for the whole gun thing, I'm not a gun expert so I can't tell you the names of those guns. But I looked at numerous ww2 photos and saw german soldiers carrying machine guns like the guy near the tank has and sniper rifles like the guy in the foreground has. And yeah, the german guy's gun does look pretty bendy now that I look at it. Doh.

I was going to mention the straightness of the gun, and the tank treads, but since that's already been covered, nevermind!
I really like this image; It has alot of atmosphere, I think the whole color and feel of it is really good -- The only thing is, it seems a little cramped...Too....square? Maybe if you have to do a similar one later, a 16:9 ratio instead of a 1:1? That might give it that "peripheral vision" feel that alot of movies have...Just a thought

I like it, pig. That sounds funny.

The tank is a little too small. I assume we are standing at 6FT, it looks like we are looking right at the German soldiers eyes and we are looking down at his feet. If you draw an eye level here, and also assume that the street is mostly level, then everything that falls on that line is also at 6 ft. In fact, you can find the size of any object in an image if you know the size of one thing. So the gun mount looks like it is a little low.

Other than that, try to hold back your lights a little more. I know it is fun to put white on every form, but try to get it to read without doing this, you will get much further in the end. Look at the foreground soldiers helmet, and the cracked wall. They have the same value in the light. If there is a very strong side or backlight it could blow out like this, but I dont feel this from other elements in the scene.

But I really do like this, makes me want to do some WW2 stuff
