I'll post a picture for those who haven't seen it already. It's a follow-up to one I made ages ago. That one was called Lady in a Mask... this one, unoriginally enough, is Lady in a Mask II...
And for those who think the mask is much prettier than the girl:
closer look
=)
(Edit) Switched pictures!

That's awesome, do you use like 1, 2 or 3 colors for the skin and use the tablet sensitivity to get the skin tones or what? Looks real good.. |

Great work, especially the mask is absolutely stunning, just one thing bothers me: That highlight that you have at the throat right next to the hair strand. My eyes always get drawn to that immediately, and I doubt you would want that to be your focal point |

Wonderful, of course. One crit tho-she looks a little flat to me. I'd like a little more contrast personally. |

Very nice! I love your backgrounds lately, how to you create them? just custom brushes?
While, overall, it's fantastic as usual, I'd pay more attention to the modelling of features like her nose which, especially on the close up, looks a bit too soft and general. I think a lot of it is the size of the fleshy pad between her nostrils. I know I'm being picky, but I'm hoping that's one of the reasons you're here - getting honest feedback is one of the best ways to progress.
Her hair and shirt both look a little flat, maybe a bit more variety in the tones, colors and shadows would help there (for instance a darker, shadow tone in some areas would give the hair more shape and life.)
Keep up this great work - I always know I'm going to be impressed when I see one of your posts. |

I like your works. Especially, feather or fur[hair] expression is very impressive..
This work is good, but her teeth isn't so beautiful and don't match for other. |

hey enyala, this is really, really great. i'm sure there's a lot of work involved in your pics. i admire the way you make things look so smooth.
i've got some little points of critique, but that doesn't mean i dont like the pic.
here goes:
there's a highlight on her left nostril that looks wrong. the light that comes from her left (our right - dammit why must that always be such a problem) is rather ambient than sharp, so i guess the highlight on her nostril would either belong to the other side of the nostril (not good, because it should be in shadow from the light on her right), or be more smooth and less yellow (good, because that's more like the light source it's cause by)
the mouth area could use some improvement overall. it looks like her jaws are tilted inside her mouth, like when she's looking at 12 o'clock, her teeth are facing 10:30. Also her Vampire tooth shouldn't be showing up at all, given the light situation. (i hope i got that one right. for some reason i got the impression of her being a vampire.. must have been the way her cheek bulges - in real life i would have said "braces" ) for the lips, you suddenly have a third light source that's used nowhere else (it's somewhere right above the viewer). I think you should have made the lip highlights from the sharp lightsource on her right instead, with a bit of ambient light from her left.
the mask should probably be casting shadows on her forehead, and the loose strands of hair should probably cast shadows on her cheek and neck. the part of her hair that starts behind her ear and goes down parallel to her neck is too straight. it needs to bend more backwards, cause right now it looks a bit (not really, but a bit) like it's disappearing into a slot in her shoulder
i think you can lose some of the flatness someone mentioned already if you give her a real jawline. currently, her jawline ends somewhere two thirds along the way. her head being in the tilted position it is, should show the jawline more prominently in the area just below the ear. try it in a mirror.
her left shoulder comes very suddenly, i am not sure about this but i think her shoulders should be a bit broader.
anyway, i really love this pic and i admire your skills. hope you find some of this advice a little useful!
[edit: the highlight on her chin is too sharp imho. i guess you wanted her bosom to reflect some light unto her chin, in that case the highlight's too sharp, too yellow and too far to her [edit2:right (see, i hate left and right)]]

Awww, I really hate getting crits, I just want mindless admiration...
Just kidding. Actually, I love getting crits if I feel they help developing the picture. Sometimes, people pick on things I find unimportant - or things I don't /want/ to change... stuff that are a matter of taste rather than anything else. Other times, like now, I get useful, wonderful crits that I can make good use of. Thanks everyone, both those who didn't, and those who did, give crits. I've tried to change what I could in the picture... and I'm honestly sick and tired of it now *chuckle*
So for now, I'm leaving it as it is. The picture you now see on the top of the page is the latest updated version of it. Enjoy =) |

Yo! No matter what everybody else says, I do not really like about half of your pics, at first, they were really cool, great CRAFTSMANSHIP, sometimes when you have inspiration (and I am NOT saying that it is such a rare occasion) you produce something wonderful (really liked that bird you posted a long while ago) Almost all of your portraits though are somewhat alike - ... making an analogy - Flandish painters - photographic paintings, there were so many of their works and they looked so much alike that their names got forgotten... Your portrairs are: smooth, the character always has these really weird, but not really varying designs of clothes and hair, but they are just like the book illustrations, they do not evoke emotions, yes somtimes they can set my mood, but still... Well, I don't know would you be able to understand what I was trying to say here (blame my english)... Please, do not take offense at what I wrote here, I realize that you are a great artist, but my advise - stay away from the portraits... No matter how good they are, they are still portraits, no matter how fancy is the mask that you put on the girls face, it is still a portrait, get inspired...
Good luck, I hope you read this... |

Hlid Skjalff: I think that the most important think when drawing, or painting, is to do what you /like/ to do. That's what I do. I draw portraits because I love drawing portraits. I don't draw, paint, or write for anyone else - I do it for myself. I don't like drawing landscapes, and I don't like drawing horses running across a field, or baby dragons frolicking in a field. What you're basically saying is that I should draw something else because you think that what I draw is boring.
Then you say that I shouldn't take offence. I don't take offence because you don't like my pictures - if that's not your cup of tea, then so be it... I couldn't care less. I do take offence because you take it upon yourself to tell me what to draw. I've always drawn what I love to draw, otherwise I don't see a point to it, since I don't do it professionally. If you want to look at art you like - do... but by all means, leave me to do what I like to do the most. I can't see why I should suddenly start drawing for other people when I've always done what's closest to my heart. This said, you're of course entitled to your own opinion... but really, I don't give a flying octopus whether you think there's a point to what I do or not. To me, there is.
Red Leader: Thanks... and I know. |

hlid's message rocks. "no matter what, your portraits will be portraits. they're portraits and your portraits won't be anything else than portraits." no shit? i think that's some great feedback right there!
i've not seen a single drawing of yours here, ever, or i might remember wrong. safe or not, i'll just say so anyway, i don't think you have the room to talk. 's a completely different matter if it is so after all, but fuck that. you're a hippie, hlid, you were born as a hippie and you will die as a hippie, no matter what you do. |

Enayla: I should have put IMHO in the end would it has helped. You like painting this, fine, cool, grande!!! I was just trying to get to you what I thought of it, just like anybody else! Except people most frequently critique the style and such, I decided to critique something more general than that.
Faust: You haven't seen anything??? Well should have taken a better look, may be what you meant was that you did not see my PAINTINGS, well I do not paint, but I had a number of images posted, the one is on right now, Night Flower, so get your ass up and make sure I actually produce something... I'm not saying that I'm better than Enayla, if that was what you were trying to imply (hee-hee how stupid of an idea) I know perfectly well that I am not, but I tried to say what I was thinking about such stuff.
LIVE_FORR: Freak is your Mom, please, no insulting further on.
Take a cool, why are you all so pissed off, I did not insult anybody, did I? Most of you do much worse, when you don't like something, or is it just because of the header "Enayla" ? Whatever, Peace out ! |

Dude, you come marching in here and walk all over Enyala's excellent illustration with your muddy boots on - what the heck do you expect. You better quickly apologize and retreat back in the box for a couple of days.
I had a look at your flowers, or at leats at the bit I could see - your server seems to be on a 28k modem - and think they're ok. In no way does that one image entitle you to open your mouth like that. and I'd say, not the most fantastic painting, which your's is certainly not, entitles anyone to open their mouth like that.
Go back where you came from, we'll try really hard to forget you ... |

I have no clue what connection my server has, neither do I care, And it was NOT my own art that "entitled" me to...what did you say about muddy boots? Anyways! Think about what you just said... apologize, for what, I did not say anything worth apologizing, I made myself very clear that it was my personal oppinion, so why should I apologize for it??? I did not use any faul or demeaning language, and certainly, I didn't say anything worth linching me... Just your personal likes and dislikes, do not "entitle" YOU, to say such &^*&, Loki.
But anyways, not to follow your trail of Rudeness, I apologize, to everyone who might consider my post offensive (I'm only wondering where exactly can you find offense here) If you like such art, just look at my post and post your own saying: "NO!!! I love your art "insert name" I love the smooth skin and hair and yadda yadda..." You got me...I hope.
Oh, somebody called for the moderator? So do I, WTF??? Sumaleth, come and pacify this &^*8, am I not allowed to post anything else but admiration posts in this thread??? |

Heeey... easy folks! Don't get hurt.
I understand that guy, but also understands enayla. But i don't understand why you people start flaming, calling dirty names etc? or you think it will help? Never.
The idea is simple, the artist like doing this or that depending on his/her personal preferences (or job offers if it's commercial). That's all.
And if Enayla enjoy doing portraits, there is no reason to kick her... for example if i don't like her stuff i'll not look/reply at her posts.
And the last thing, milkman, like Loki said everyone can critique... just feel the difference between constructive critics and blame.

Loki: OK, who is rude now? Me or you? Read my posts and read yours!!! "but hlid was just rude" --REALLY??? Where? - can I have my quote? Where is this hypothetical "rudeness" you were talking about? Rude, just because my oppinion differs from the rest? Duh!? Mind your own posts: "Noone is allowed to open his mouth like that"??? (not a quote, but close)Are you kidding me??? Who are you state such stuff? SUMALETH!!! |

first of all, i think the image is beautifully done. excellent colors and detail. it's not my favorite of yours, but it's still nice.
and about hlid: he asked enayla to look past his english, a simple request people obviously didn't care to follow. from what i gathered, he was telling enayla that she has the potential to make a more rare kind of art, as was with the bird and some of her other images. where as the portraits are all quite ellegent, a lot of them are very similar looking. that can be a little insulting, sure, but at least take into account who's saying this and what they're probably implying. ignoring the one bad reply amongst the hundreds of mushy\good ones shouldn't be that hard ;] and to the rest of you, enayla doesn't need body guards, i'm sure.
..and amen to drawing what you love. |

guess who! hint: same person who started thread :P
i think you guys missed that?
the "crits" people, not just enayla, don't like are ones which are unprovokedly offensive or ignores that the artist WANTS to paint in that style or that subject.
otherwise all crits more than welcome!
i'm sure it's safe to say all the artists here would rather get constructive criticism than inane "cool pic!" comments. :P
enayla, i want you to know i would give crits if i found anything to improve, but i can't love the pic and will do a mask one day (inspiration properly credited) when i think i can manage it. |
