nicely done, but it takes a while to get what's going on in the pic with all that action.

There's so much going on, and the tones are so similar, that it's kind of hard to make out what's going on. But I like this a lot all the same.

I think there are some issues both with the values and the color. There is no real sense of light, except for the shadows inked, and the colors are not used to isolate and define shapes (especially the characters). Vlaues and colors should lead the eye on all the important elements of the picture. here the eye wanders, get lost, and the overall effect is almost abstract. I know that the intricate pencils don't help but...
The result is very busy, very monochromatic and quite unnatractive I would say. I don't like it.

Yes, I agree with you on some points.

The book is supposed to have a monochromatic feel to it, it's supposed to be a bleak world somewhat void of color.

If I had the chance now I might darken the buildings a bit, to boost contrast, but the line art tended to get lost with that.

Issues to resolve as I get better.

Thanks for the comments!

That's insane

Lots to look at. Your eye just keeps wandering. The hanging strings of light are a nice touch too.

Only thing, though.. maybe you could outline foreground action thicker that background stuff; it would make the image easier to understand.

I would have to agree with all points made by black_fish. By that reasoning and after viewing the large version I must say I don't like it very much either. I hope you don't take offense to my comment or consider this an attack on your artistic ability in any way because that is not my intent. I find Bachalo's artwork is confusing enough as is and your colouring doesn't help much in terms of relating or translating the concept of the piece. In my opinion the colour work on this piece is much weaker than your previously posted material, which I personally liked much more simply because it added more emotion and readability to the linework, things that seem to be lacking in this particular work. In my most humble opinion of course

Chris Bachalo is a genius.
Nice colour job of course, no negative comments here.

So much going on... brain ceasing functions... just what exactly is the definition of steampunk?

Point taken : ino::

I don't take anything personal. I'm growing as an artist. Not convinced I've arrived.

Separation of the artwork is something that I work on from page to page, and results do vary

I wish they could all be perfect!

Always loved Steampunk... but Ive always felt the pages are so daaamned cluttered... allthough I guess thats part of the charm.. wonder what it would look like without your awesome colors... heh. Always thought that Fausts blade, since its glowing, should shed some orangeish light upon things.... Ah well. Awesome, anyway

Nice work James. Pretty consistant with the style Bad@$$ used before you. I've been doing some quick fixes to help the depth and focus in my book. If you are interested drop me an email and we can talk shop.

Not alot to add...

I do like the color choices. Green sky looks nice.

Would say the buildings grey is all too similar.

All-in-all, I like your work, James. Very nice. I'm not dissappointed with you taking over Steampunk.

Jamez,

Ahh, now I see what you were up to

I like this one, but I want to see more new stuff...get off your arse...

I really like seeing the before and after of these pages...the line art before color put to it. Its also interesting to see any notes you recieve before hand and then the final coloring...cool to see what you are given and how it comes together. Not to mention the time frame you crank these things out in a professional environment. Its just been a real eye opener for me and may benefit others if you can do that...

Magpie: I sent you an email with my suggestions and a touched-up pic. I'd post it, but I'm having trouble getting to my ftp account and I'd probably get laughed at anyway. You could post it if you wanted to though.

Anticz(aka mike brown) kindly let me use his site 'cause I'm way too busy these days to get my own one running.

PS Thanks Mike!
