I think the downfall of this image was a lack of planing. I just started adding stuff to photo instead of setting up the composition. Suggestions?

Here's the original.

I like this. Very nice

Suggestions: Add a few arms and legs sticking out of the ball and add a few peopl laying on the ground and running away. It could be a goverment experiment gone wrong.

THis has a very nice technique, but I must agree with you on the compistion. If you just get a more dramatic angle, like closer to the wall to get a nice perspective diagonal in order to draw you in to the painting. Great job anyhow I am really impressed with technique.

Theodore, you munged the perspective. Matte painting allows you to be loosey-goosey with the technique, but rarely the perspective. As you pointed out, planning would have made a big difference.

Here's a quick look at the perspective grid you've set up.

You follow it fairly well, save for that troublesome watertank area in the left hand corner. A quick repaint yields a little something like this:

Your colors and brush work are utterly amazing though.

Something looks cut and paste/superimposed about it, maybe the colours are not in sync.
or maybe it needs stronger shadows/lighting (like on the plane since its under the light..
probably the floor looks the most convincing area. Definetely cool for your first attempt tho.

For first attempt that is really good. Better then my first attempt. Anyway a few crits I have would be first with the barrel. The grim spilling out of the seems could given more of a wet look and with the light hitting it from the side like it is, the tinies of bumps on it's suface would be highlighted a little. The reflections in the window of the plane need to be sharper in contrast. Another thing to consider is the entire scene, not just that which is in your picture plane. You could have distant lights causing a few sparkling hightlight on the metalac componants of the plane and engine. And lastly...notice how you have indicated the orange light from inside on our side of the plane(which was done nicely and does it's job well in putting the plane further back into the warehouse. However, rather then indicating the extreme forground in the reflection underneath the plane, I believe it would have been better to reflect this light there as well.

Heh, having now seen the original source photo, I have even more respect for your color sense. A lot of people have difficulty breaking away from the original material. Your colors are FAR better than what's in that pic.
