hey everyone,

good to see the forums back up. Though I've not been very active here latley, I still read and missed the forum when it was down
hopefully I'll get the chance to post a lot of new stuff next week.

Anyway, here's just a little exercise I did. it's without photo reference to exercise values and color....it's really fascinating how much you can get out of simple shapes as long as the values are right. Though, that's an area that can be exploited to the unlimited and I have a long way to go. Spooge, I remember you mentioned you were going to make a "tutorial" or something about values. Since this is one of your really strong areas (I think), I would love if you'd have some time to give me a few comments, either on this image, or if you think I should execise this in a another way.

the perpective, etc are a bit wobbly/bad, bud I didn't focus on that at all...just the colors and values...

All right, don't be TOO disappointed--I'm not Spooge, just dumb old Socar Myles, but I really like this piece. I didn't even notice how simple the shapes were until I read the description--it really works. The colours, the values...damn. It's bang on. I love the way the light's slanting down over the rooftops. Perhaps the open windows on the left hand side, particularly the one that's sticking out, could use some bright highlights, due to the direction of light, but apart from that, no crits spring immediately to mind. Good job...do more!

Hey joachim! Haven't seen you post in a while... hope things are going well at innerloop... really liked IGI

Anyway, great value excercise. In fact, if you backup a couple of feet it even looks realistic. Heck, try for one at a bigger resolution, and shrink it and see how it turns out.

I personally like the reflection on the windows.

Damn good job to be done with no reference. Amazing actualy to see the light so convincing. I don't know how you do that.

If you want me to picky the window in very upper left might be too bright.(How's that for stupid comment.)

Great painting.

Values look good. I'd say that I don't think the white matte cube radiosity shading holds true necesarily as you increase the cube in size. Reflected light is greatly diminished in strength, more like lights humans create, and their strength will fade over distance much more repidly than the sun's. However, I'm not saying it's wrong in this pic-just bringing up the topic that the rules might change, so don't always think "light at top, dark at bottom, of shaded side." Any thoughts on this Spoogey? You're The Master(tm) after all. :]

Very nice work brother! I agree with the comments you wrote about values. I also wish Craig would put together that tutor/discussion on the subject.

Hey Joachim - I like this a lot. I hope you don't mind me messing with it a little bit, especially since I think you're a better painter than I am. But how about this? I kind of exaggerated the change in values where the shadow hits the wall...

I like it overall; it is great being out of your head.

My only general comments are to watch how much texture, activity and contrast that you put into an area that is really in shadow. That is most of what I did in this sketch. Also, look at the indication of windows, most are recessed, and the dark line shows not only the recession but also the reflection of the recession in the glass. So keep the dark line on the far side of the windows. If you put it on the close edge, it will read as the glass being on the same plane as the wall.

Nice Joachim, maybe a little bit blurry in some areas, but the task was for values, and you have done some awesome work.

I agree with Spooge, I wouldn't have picked it myself, being careful with texture, activity and contrast in areas of shadow. That makes sense.... so thanks Spooge!

hey everyone, thanks a lot for so many kind comments and helpful hints !!

Francis, I don't mind you messing with my stuff at all ....And, I agree a lot with what you did. Actually, I tried to get it like that on the wall, but it just turned odd. Comparing it with the one I made, what you did made a lot of difference. - thanks !

spooge, thanks a lot for the comments. .very helpful. It's so much easier to see what works better when I get a paintover like that. the dark line helped a lot with getting the window in a different plane. also, you did improve the walls, as francis did. I don't know what you think, but I kinda missed a bit warmer color on the wall with the window, I think it kind of gives the feeling that the sun hits the wall a bit more...not the amount I did, but something in between. Or, do you think it worked badly ? ...-anyway, your help is reall appreciated, as always !
