more inspired by Gerome than the movie...
Here's the drawing that I started with

Goodbrush is costing me hundreds a month to keep open. My last adventure in other hosting ideas was not successful/: any ideas? |

I wonder how you get those great colours. The right tones for light and shadow. wow.
Have you ever tried webadvertisment? Those small gifs on top on a webpage. My friends finance their websites that way. I guess you get enough hits/day that you could easily afford the webspace. not?

very nice craig. Somehow it is a bit similar in color and angle to that other glatiator picture you did a while ago, but also quite different...looks great. Yeah, I guess you are talking about Jean Leone Gerome, damn that gladiator picture he did is powerful. The colloseum scenes in the movie pales in comparison.
-Domain. How can you pay that much for a domain and space. I pay about a $150 a year for domain name and 60mb, I didn't even think that was cheap. Is it because you have so many visitors per day, you have to pay more ?

I like it... as always...
Is his hip pushed back and the upper body forwards? Still with this foreshortening, the outstreched leg looks a bit long to me... But what do I know!
Gerome's great painting was the inspiration for Gladiator... At least it states so on the inside of the DVD cover.
Gerome is also one of my all-time favorites. He's arabian stuff is just breathtaking... He was THE painter!

You just can't stop surprising me! The shield is just amazing!!! Yep. you're the man! If I have to give some critic maybe the gladiators right leg looks little too long/thin. The problem seems to start somewhere from the knee. |

Damn!
Friggin' nice 500-sketches as well.
Hope you find a way to keep up the site, banner ads might not be enough to save it though.

It's a sign of old age. Isn't it great! Acually, I think he's just trying to get us to loosen the hell up and start solving problems instead of painting the hairs on our heads.
(sorry about what i said about you the other day, faust.)

That would be a shame. Maybe there is some foundation for contemporary realism or something that would host it. I don't know. The site is too good for adds.

Lovely Light/shadows+colours.
I love that purple shadow on the ground and the design of the helmet
Just one crit:
The arm looks odd. I think it looks too long. The legs(thighs)too. Othervise from that it looks great

Yeah, the shield is pretty damn cool.
Hm, I'm not sure what to make of his stance.. It sort of looks to me that he is about to leap forward into a counter-attack from a defensive backpedaling movement (since his lead leg is so straigth), as if he was just moving out of the way of an incoming strike. However, that would make more sense if he had his shield in the lead arm.. Ah. I must shut up now. |

i think my favorite part of this pict is the lighting and the sheild. that sheild is awesome and the reflection it gives is perfect. the gladiator has a interesting abstract scrony style so i wouldnt change that either. keep it up!!! |

well there is alot of options i am not sure how much web space you need to keep this site but let me know how much space you need.
www.brinkster.com gives alot of space for $10 a month
also maybe shorten the amount of days this forum can go back this would save lots of spave |

nice picture. Rich in color without being gaudy. I agree with Micke about the arm/leg thing, though.
As for hosting, there's only so much you can do:
- find a cheaper web host (I wouldn't recommend this, though--pair is a good host)
- decrease the amount/size of images on your site to cut down your bandwidth usage
- serve ads
- figure out some other way to generate revenue from the site

you could start a cult that worships the powerful spooge demon, and force them to give you money. or you could try selling stuff, i'm sure there are plenty of people who would pay for any of your work in any form. but maybe you dont want to spend time or dont even want to do that at all. or you could make vague references to your ultimate painting tutorials that will show people how to paint just like you, but they can only see them by giving you their credit card number. or something.. |

(great picture)
If i remember right craig uses a mac, apple gives you 15megs of bannerless web space for free just for having a mac.. and you can purchase up to 400megs of space relatively inexpensive from them. my site is hosted off that free 15 megs
btw, that guy looks like he has a monstrous head im trying to figure out how you think of to get in those subtle colors, like the green halo around the walls shadow. Hrmz, nice

whoa! i cannot but repeat what others have said about the light and color. light on ground and walls add to the composition very nicely. marvellous.
but. there's something in that pose(+anatomy?) that doesn't read very well. for me anyway... also a little thing that's bothering me is the positioning of the shield. i mean it's straight front view(hm, actually it's these things that only start bothering you if you notice them).

Beautiful, Craig. I can really see the hard work you put in learning light in the ease (or the apparent ease) you have in painting something like that, fast and lose, and at the same time mindnumbingly right. Those reflections on the shield are so simple but so perfect. I really admire that.
I don't know if there are any good book about light, how the light behaves, bounces and reflects; I guess you spent a long time observing light and that you have a keen eye for that.
I won't comment on the drawing because I don't think it's the suject of your picture.
I think it's all about the light and temperature: you can really feel the warm glow of the walls. Somebody said about your Norms painting that it felt 'warm', and that's true that you're painting more and more with 'temperature'. Very interesting! |

Thank you. New wallpaper.
No offense, but when I first glanced at it, it looked like he was holding a cordless mike performing some Kaorokeus Maximus...

There is something about how you made the background. The way the shadows play and the background is hard to distinguish that seems...grandiose. Like there is so much more that I'll never see. Really keen. |

Great picture, Craig. The amazing thing about you is your ability to make a rather loose painting convey so much detail. What would take any normal person 10 strokes to do you can do in 1. Simply amazing.
If goodbrush ever goes away, I'll have to resort to violence. |

Faustgfx, I don't think there is a linear progression in my work from loose to tight, if that even means anything. This is much more defined than that norn pictures, but much looser than the pirate thing. I guess to answer you I feel that painting looser is also a way of finding out what is important in an image and leaving the rest out. I think things have more impact that way. That is, if I do it right, which I don't always do. If I mess up, it reads as an unfinished sloppy picture. If it is right, it will be much nicer than an image that depends on hard edges and details and noodling for it's appeal. But I think ultimately, I want to do images that have the gesture, the simplification, the design, and also the craft. But to me, to make an image attractive with just a few larger shapes is MUCH harder than rendering something to death. That requires patience. Good, loose painting requires experience and knowledge and experience. That is why I am doing a lot of them, and I am doing the 500 images as well.
There is also an element of entertainment if I paint looser. It talks back to me and that dialog takes the image to places that it would have never have gone if I had been more methodical.
I am still learning about how to exaggerate proportions and gestures. The forward arm and leg are impossibly stretched, and that was intentional. But I did not do it right if it bothers that eye. So much work to do and so much to learn. Generally, when elongating the figure, the lower you go on the figure the more elongation there is. The head is left alone, the torso a little longer, the thigh longer still and the blow knee really long. I was after the gesture here, not really the anatomy. It seems like half bought it and half did not. That is a failing grade maybe it is just a matter of amount, but nothing is that simple.
I agree the shield should not be viewed dead on.
I think I may start selling Glicee prints. I have held back the high rez files for just such a purpose. Signed limited editions or some BS like that. But it would help out I guess.
Eric, I will mail you
I am averaging about 500-700 MB per day, and I have about 40 MB on line. I don't know if this is a lot, I am sure it is a barely discernable trickle compared to porno sites, but if I judge it on what they are charging me, it's a lot.
Hehe, Waldo, I think you are right. I kill you, you kill me, we are happy familee

Hey Craig how much bandwidth are you pulling a month? Polykarbon.com just went through the same thing your site did, the host (Hispeed.com) just pulled the plug on it because it went overboard on bandwidth (it was costing him $200 a month). He recently moved to a new host that allows 40gb a month (or more) for way cheaper than he was paying.
I forgot the host's name but I'll be sure to ask and get all the details. Let me know if your interested. Or if you want you can e-mail me at [email protected]

hey spooge great as always. love the loose style and the great colors. i have to agree with micke though that the arms seem a bit odd. it seems the shoulder to me but i defer to you and micke. but jeez the wall and the sheild kick ass... i'd love to see a "progressive" of this new loose style of yours.....
as far as web hosting goes (i'm a bit ignorant to your need since i get about a hit a week). but in my research CIhost.com seems to offer pretty good deals if you and space and bandwidth. if i understand it correctly there offering 2gb of storage and unlimited bandwidth for $30 a month plus some administrative fees. check out http://www.cihost.com/?zone=products/shared_unix_hosting_specials for there specials.
