The mech is a lowpoly 3d model rendered in 3dsMAX, the rest (clouds, background etc) is painted in Photoshop with a lot of different custom brushes.

here is a mesh render of the mech:

please point errors and possible improvements out to me, thanks.

Hey Nex!

I know next to nothing about Mechs, so it's pretty difficult for me to point out any problems with /that/. Looks good to me though =)

Might be a slight oddity with the highlights on its right foot - they look so grey, and the light seems so bright and yellow. Ah, well, what do I know?

The background is /so/ beautiful

I had an earlier version of the background that i used for the rendering as reflection map on the windows of the mech.
To use it as environment background in rendering turned out to be a rather bad idea because masking for the painted parts got harder.

later i finished the background after the rendering by painting the parts in with the paintbrush.

Next time I would probably just render against a flat background color and then mask it with select color range in photoshop to paint the rest in.

p.s. is there a method for rendering against an alpha background channel?

wow... I wish Photoshop 4 could do custom brushes. Enyala is right, that is a very nice background. I also like the orange reflected in the glass canopy on our side of the mech Lets us see the sky behind our view!

I like the fact that the mech is bland. You don't see a thousand useless shapes sticking out everywhere - just for looks.

The mech's lighting could stand to be a bit more contrasty. Like sharp regions of highlight along the back edges and strips of highlight running down some of the panels on the legs.

I have a question about the background. Did you draw it before or after you popped the rendered pic of the mech into the picture?
