awesome mark making and light. very sad face. i like this because it is complicated in the mark making but simple in composition. makes it good on they eyes or something.
what if you chose some part of the piece as more of a focal point by sharpening it up, bringing out a little contrast or somehow popping it out at like the eyes or nose or something to make some atmospheric perspective? and what if you used some blue or red or green somewhere to add depth to the color, maybe kind of monochrome? just a thought. |

thats really, truley beautifull. i love working with weathered faces.
could perhaps do with a little higher contrast. and/or highlights in some areas. seems a little washed out and dark, perhaps it was done on a mac?
if this link works youll see what i mean, whether or not im right is another story. http://www.geocities.com/kidkolt2001/sijunface.jpg |

This is worth what you paid for it
I have no idea if you think this is an improvement, but if you do, I think you need to drop the activity of a lot of the textures in the shaded areas.
Think of contrast in more ways than just light and dark. Straight and curved, flat and textured, soft and hard edge, etc.
I played up the shapes a little more than I should of to make the point and because this is the quickest way to make something interesting.
I did drop the ambient light, so there are just the two side sources. The secondary source is also a little cooler. Again thats a difference to play up. You dont have to go that dark with fill, but I did to make certain areas go flatter to make my point about contrast of flat and textured.
The drawing is a little wacked all over, nothing big, but enough to make you unsettled. I changed the head shape to show the off center viewpont You head silhouette was pretty symmetrical.
Dont loose corners of forms, or shapes. They get doughy and soft very easily. Then it looks mushy everywhere and the drawing is easy to loose.

Looks great Frost ! Only thing I was going to comment is what spooge illustrated, harder edges and more defines shapes.
Atleast one of us is back, hopefully I will soon get the time and interesst to participate here more often too -did you get my mail btw?

resume in english : That s great !

Thank you all very much for the comments and help!
Funkmitten: The skin is indeed very monochromatic, no life, etc. I'm still learning... and I should learn on top of it all not to get so fed up so quickly of my work and rush it to the finish. Thanks!
Cos: Thank you brother. =)
SoMK: Thanks to you as well. But your stuff is better. =)
Roundeye: That's always been a problem with me... I've always drawn washed out and lacking contrast... it's a very very old "habit"... or my mind just cannot compute such things too well. Thank you for the tips, they make sense. (Done on PC btw).
HoodZ: No, it's not... (I don't even know who this man was.) =)
Rinaldo: My thanks to you... (I feel ashamed and embarassed).
CapnPyro: =)
Spooge: A repait! This is a first, thank you. As you can tell, I'm still not drawing from life... (sighs). You're absolutely right about simplifying the shapes and getting the right physical attributes pushing through. I'm also very bad at drawing... I need to work on my anatomy, shapes, symmetry... I have no excuse for that. The touched up lighting is nice, but, I'm afraid of falling (back) into the 'cartoony' exaggerated lighting model (which I am trying to learn my way out of), as I suppose I'm looking for a more photorealistic look than an illustrated look. But yes, I see your points. Thanks a lot Craig. I'll try harder next time. =) Your comments are always welcome, please do so again if you can. =)
Joachim: Well, I'm temporarily back, it just felt like a very long time since I did anything with serious thinking into it, a more serious try to acheive something. I agree with the comments given very much, but I'm always scared to venture out on more contrast and shape definition... something I must learn. I did get your mail... sorry for not responding... I've had a lot on my mind and heart lately, as I told you in the mail. It's not the easiest of things but life goes on. =) Thanks for the reply my friend, looking forward to seeing you around. =)
Toast!: Merci vieux. Bah.. ouais... "QUEL talent?" (il y en as pas...). Bref, merci.

Hmm this doesn't happen very often but I don't think Spooge did a very good job at correcting your pic. I think he had some good points when it came to you your pic but the way he did the repaint toke the life out of the character ..He made it more blocky like it was carved from stone I also happen to think that you captured a lot more emotion then the one spooge did!! .I am not sure what he was going for with you pic but there where not as many mistakes to begin with as he pointed out...I took your pic and added a bit of a gaussian blur to some of the shapes and it looks better to me without all the texture in it.I know it isn't perfect but to me spooge mad your old man look a little unnatural!

Great portrait.Has a lot of character. I like a fact that seems to contain a personality.
For me, a lot of that comes from the little details. I think Spooge has a good point about large shapes and all, but I wouldn't change this painting - it's got a sad, thoughtfull, introspective feel that you would not want to mess with. Great job.

very nice Frost. You did a great job putting life into him. I actually like your painting better than spooges repaint, and for the same reasons you said. His is more cartony than yours more realistic approach - something that I also try to incoorporate in my stuff, but is so hard to do when most of your life you've been drawing comicstyle characters and stuff...

No, binke. Frost looks like a blend between Uma Thurman, the Pillsbury Dough Boy, a gopher, and a large clump of dog feces molded into a smiley face.
Frost: awesome job - I really like craig's repaint of planes of the face, as i think that is what you're really missing lately - your b/w stuff you did in the drawingboards showed extreme plane development, so I know it's there Drop a line. |

Milkman/Sushi/Marc_Taro: Thank you for the compliments. Although I am flattered by the fact that you like the original better, Craig brings up some good points, after all, he is Craig and he was simply bringing out some points in a quick overpaint. =) Thank you again, glad you liked it!
Burnout:
EviLToYLeT: Thanks... uhm, Bill Cosby? I, uh, suppose...
Topeira: Indeed, the iris are too big... didn't think people would notice too much because of his lids/expression... I was wrong. =) No ref.
Boomer: Thank you my friend. Yeah... I don't think I did such an excellent job of pulling it off, but maybe values tend to blend and be more subtle in reality (cinematic lighting aside)... as artists, we always tend to draw by representing the key features, either by shape, color, value, in an exaggerated form because it makes it more "pure" and more easily recognizeable... I must be slowly turning into Pierre... not sure what that means... I guess just not a common illustrator. =) I don't know where I'm going with this... or wether I'm learning at all...
Binke: Hey! No, it's not me. I'm exactly like mjmcchesney described... just another hybrid piece of crud. =)
Stolln: Thanks. (*shrug*) I don't know anymore.
