Arrrr. This one was starting to go down the drain the way that that girl in the window went. I get tight and try to "finish" something and it all goes to hell. This one looked better as a sketch. Hey, I still have those, here
sleep... that's when I'm a Pirate!
On more general topics I got my site back up after a month of being down. The dweebs who agreed to host it pulled the plug right when I could do nothing about it. No warning, nuthin.
Final Fantasy is done (my part). 3-d lovers will need oxygen to see this and survive. My part is Very Minor, the 3-d stuff is the movie.
Am going to see parents tomorrow, so look up my address on whois and come over and help yourself. I gotta fix that.

Whoah, it's Cristopher Lee in a wig!
*awed*
I really like the chap in the doorway. And those drippy bits of water, although, they maybe look a bit static. It's a bit unlikely that they'd be dripping straight down, unless the ship's in drydock.
That said, I'm still in awe. ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/biggrin.gif) |

I think your being hard on yourself saying the piece has gone off somewhat but I think that it lacks less atmosphere than the sketches. I like the blue tone as opposed to the lighter feel of the main piece, the second sketch looks good with the early morning white light pouring in and the duller room.
There's something about his right arm that doesn't look quite right. To me it doesn't fit with his pose and it looks a little forced. Maybe if he were holding a sword scabbard closer to his side instead of the dagger, maybe. |

Great!
A problem, though: the first time i looked at the picture, it was a bit hard for me to make out the blade of the sword (in the right hand). also: quote

That kinda bugged me too.
But i love it nonetheless:. Waaaay better then what i can do. *saves to hard-drive* |

nice to have you back craig !
Nice painting. The finished one looks impressive, but I agree with you that the sketch looked better....more mood to it. Esp. the one with the strong light from the top, you get the feeling of an early clouded morning. But the finished one looks more "classic" in way, whatever that means.

Great to have another masterpiece of yours
on this forum.
I think it does a great job in capturing
the atmosphere of pirates stereotypes. You
instantly know that the guy with the
embroidery can only be the captain himself
(like Long John Silver?) and that the other
sailors are cowering before his absolute
authority on his ship.
At least I think so. |

Nobody is perfect. Your style and ability to render is most beautiful. Your ability to see things in an imagined 3d space is probably the best in this forum. But if I were to critique this picture I would say that your scale is a little off and your compostion fails to move past the focal points.
Usually in pictures in this forum I can point out things very quickly which could be fixed but your picture took me a good 20 minutes to examine. To clarify what I mean by your scale. The men in the bottom of the picture look as if they are laying on the ground while the captain's head reaches the top of the room. I don't know much about ships and this might be the way it is but there is a man in the back of the picture who is standing at a doorway almost twice his size. Compared to the captain he is a midget. As for compostition the picture builds up from the right to the left as the stairs descend and then you climb the captains uniform. But once you get past the captain there is the light in the background and then the picture dies. If I was to really nitpick this picture I would say to bring in a few more highlights on the left to bring the viewers eye back up to the captain. Lastly I would distort the lights more on the staircase so they are less clear and harden the lights on the captain so they more show the way the ceiling cuts up the light.
Thank you so much for the posting the picture. I am a big fan of your stuff. I mean Wow. You could be a great fine artist if you wanted to.

wonderfull, as allways, spooge. i especialy like that pirate guy in the left corner. I think he'z kneeling or something, that's why he is so low, while captain's head is reaching the ceiling. Am i right?. Or is it just a trick to make him realy special and to show who's the boss in da ship! am I right? huh, am I
I especialy like your light fx, that you make with those simple colours and the wood texture in this piece is realy great.

ah...I've missed ya buddy. And what an entrance. This is the kind of stuff that makes me believe my imagination again. I'm not going to explain in detail, but the lighting, the atmosphere, the style, thats what dreams are made of. You've inspired me to make something cool. Thanks |

I dont think any of us are strangers to the "My sketch had sooooo much more life" syndrome. This is, for me, the greatest chalange- when to add what, when to leave it as it is... and how to develope a picture without loosing the spirit. You probably have a Wyath book kicking around; it helps me to take a peek occasionaly, see what happens when polished and loose come together. On the other end of the spectrom, Maxfield Parish, Mr tight composition and rendering.
Thanx for the peek at your work.
Rhysling
(small nit picked: period jackets were on the sparrow sholdered side- dudes got Mall Mom sholder pads in there! Also, if he tapers a bit more going up, he'll fit a bit better in the composition, IMHO ) |

Oh my! I'm SO in love with his outfit!
Though the third sketch is really awesome, I think the finished result is just as wonderful. Seems like two different pictures, but there's nothing bad about that.
I love the light, and the colours, and...well... everything, basically
I think my favourite bit is the fluffy, almost tousled feather in his hat.

Good to have you back spooge
While I can appreciate this piece a lot, it doesn't grab my imagination all that much. the sketches are fantastc and have more meaning to me. As I see it, everything is hanging on the main character, and he just seems out of place. Facial structure was a bit different in that time period etc. He looks very "Hollywood", like he's waring the costume, but he doesn't "fit" it. the sketches show more of an evil character, and that's what I get out of the picture as a whole, but the face just doesn't fit with that. Lacking the character I think he needs. This is most likely subjective assumption, but still.
Still Love it=) I'm just trying to be harsh ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/wink.gif) |

I actually REALLY love this one. I also like the detailed version a lot more than the sketches.

Just awesome, I like that you took the time to render this more than you usually do here
I also think the 3rd pic has such a nice mood and atmosphere, but thats what you get when you do things quick and free.
I think ANYTHING fully rendered and detail, it starts to lose the rythm behind the concept
Anyways great one

I'm happy to see your site back up. We love being able to check it out anytime we need a little push.
quintessential- You're probably just being nice to the spooge demon, but in case you're serious: Don't get too down. It's unusual to have such a talented painter so seeminglly close by. Just because Craig is one of the sijun gang, don't feel bad by comparison. There are losts of artists were not worthy of, all over the world and all throughout history. So cheer up.
