I started this pic today but kinda lost inspiration for it after a couple of hours. Probably the reason I'll never be hired for matte painting! The picture was done using Painter Classic. The smaller building is not very good, but it's all on one layer so I can't take it out without re-doing the background. There's a larger version availeble here(130k):- http://www.cee.hw.ac.uk/~ceenda/skyline1k_fullsize.jpg

I like it, very serene looking.
I especially like the way the background just fades away into the distance. Very nice.

Some foreground detail (reeds, et cetera), or a tree on the little peninsula to the left, might help establish a bit more depth (not that its terribly flat right now).
The haze is nice, as is your treatment of the sun.

I've added some foreground to the pic on the right to add a bit of depth.
SlightlyTwisted: Thanks, that's the kind of atmosphere I'm aiming for.
balistic: That's a good point actually. I've added some foreground to balance the pic out a bit more. Also, I've flipped the pic horizontally, so your comment doesn't make sense any more. murHAHAHAHAHAhA!
SushiMaster: Cheers!
Jezebel: Thanks gal! Been missing much needed Jezebel action on the board of late. The applet doesn't seem to be working any more, no-one's username comes up even when people are there drawing.
schabe: Thanks for the complements! You're right, I think I made a few mistakes with the reflections.
neebhore: I'm glad you like it. I've addded a darker subject to the foreground which should make the pic more balanced. Your idea about the flock of birds is a good one, I might add some birds to the pic!

That is very very nice Ceenda, I like it a lot. if you want some critiques, I'd say there's a slight problem with the homogeniety of the environment lighting on the buidlings in the scene... where the buildings in the center-left have a highly diffused and greyish-mid-tone ambiant while the croppe tower to the right is giving off a totally different ambiant setting.
It's good to cheat a little to get things into focus, but I think it might be just a little overdone here. I'm not a pro, I don't "really" do this as a living, but just pushing further into the analysis of subtleties would help you even further.
It's a solid image, I'm not knocking you down here, but I think they are very valid and helpful comments.
cheers,
frost. |

Great picture Ceenda! I recently did a did a similar painting myself (though it was not nearly as good as yours). I find painting the sun and the haze quite difficult and I think you have done a great job with it!

The thing I really like about the picture is the style of the buildings on the left. They are very well constructed. They are very solid and look like they could be built. I love how whimsical they are. I wish there were more of these buildings.
cool stuff

sweet ceenda, good to see you back ma son!
I think I'm agreeing with Frost (he used a lot of big words that I'm not sure I understood) when I say that the shadow sides of the far away buildings should be as dark as the one in the foreground. Other than that I love it man, full of eastern promise in a turkish delight kinda way.

Am I going insane or did the pic change?
[edit] just looked up and saw your reply in this thread. I'm still probably going insane, but for completely different reasons [/edit]
Anyway, I liked the old and the new Actually I really like all your digital paintings, they are very imaginative and set a great mood.

I love that! I think you should have some foreground activity also, and maybe some ripples in the water, very subtle though, so it keeps nice and calm. or maybe a flock of birds in the background or something. i dunno... |

I like the updated one even more, the new foreground tower makes me think of like a guard/sentry tower across the river, protecting the palace. cool.
You like my birds idea? So people do take notice of me
[edit]-Went and had a peek at your homepage, You've done some good stuff.

Beautiful scene Ceenda. Don't lose hope on it, it looks too pretty to stop. I could be wrong, but try and measure the distance of one of the buildings to establish the reflections, I think they are a little low in the pic. I would love to be having turkish coffee in that tower in the foreground. |

Nice to see your posting again Ceenda! Very nice piece! Keep up the great work.
Some highlights and darker shadows on the left buildings might add more depth for the eye. They all seem to have the same level of value in their shadows and highlights.
Love the sun and reflection!
Keep posting!

neat work dude! Sky reminds me loki's...
i can only suggest to fix the line between water and ground (now it looks kinda rough compare to buildings for example) and needed some little waves/ripples on the water surface maybe.
anyway it's da koolna work man!
