Yes, you are right about the paradox of being "goth." There's always different factions in every sub-culture.

For me(and I'm not goth. Yes, I'm denying it), it's all about the dark enchantement, beautiful melancholy, fascination with the macabre/supernatural, and the romantic mystery.

I don't care for the more shock/extreme goth stuff. I think it's just disturbing and ugly. BTW, Marilyn Manson is NOT goth.

hehe.. kinda off topic(?) sorry.. but i just love when someone asks "what is a goth?".. after years of hanging around them, my response is 'they're a bunch of black clad whiney creatures that complains about everything' (well the ones where i live are anyways *grin*)

but i wouldn't even attempt to give a definition. but living here i have observed that if u call yourself a goth, u get ridiculed by other 'goths' for being 'goth'. and if u are a 'goth' but u claim otherwise, u get ridiculed by 'goths' for being in denial. it's all strange

Or if you want the real, fun rock n roll version of it - it was when the punks hanging around batcave in london began joking around with cobwebs and skulls and bands like specimen and alien sex fiend played the field.
So all your gloomy friends got it all wrong, its all about sarcasm.
