All right... so I actually listen to criticism. I do. Sometimes, I wonder if this is a good or a bad thing.

Most of all, I've been listening to people whining about my airbrushed style - that it was too smooth and yadda yadda... Part of me agreed. At the same time... there's something about that style that I like. I don't want my paintings to be rugged... I want to keep some elements of that style because it's /me/.

So I'm looking for something in between. The lady with the rose was my first successful (according to myself) attempt at this. This, is my second try... I don't think it's as good as the lady, but I think I'm getting the hang of this.

(First off, as I always have to point out in these cases - this is a he, not a she... and it is lightly based on a picture in a hairstyle magazine)

(and because people always ask me... I don't know for sure how long this one took me. I've been working nearly non-stop on it ever since I finished the lady with the rose image.)

well Again a beautiful picture (sigh) but to comment on your style I think you really found what you were looking for in the face, but the hair (although beautiful) is still a bit "airbrushed", I liked your "work during lunch hour" more "non-airbrushed".

Yah and apparently you foundit :) I really dig those new backgrounds of yours. They help your character to blend in the pict and not just popup on a black bg. Your backgrounds add textures now to your painting... Yay ! Very cool !

You mean that REAL people, coud ACTUALLY have hair like that !? :))) *jealous... with her half inch long hair :p* I should go out more often ...

that is downright gorgeous... although had you not said it was a HE.... well... the full lips, large eyes, lack of a browridge, and rounder jaw is just a tiny bit misleading

Sorry Enayla, I don't usally post on your threads cause I'm pretty late to them, but keeping quite I'm a real fan of your work, I really like your style 90% Airbrush and 10% Paint brush it rules.

Have to admit the hair is OTT with Airbrush

You probably don't know me as well as some people..Let me say "I have been a lurker on the forums at sijun for a *long* time"..But I have ALWAYS loved your work (and everyone in my family does too)

This is a beautiful peice, and I can see how you haven't made it as smooth as the others, But I love it.

Please, Please please.. NEED MORE!

i think either of the styles you choose is cool. but your guys always seem kind of feminine. not that there's anything wrong with that, but can you draw one's that aren't?

Enayla: I don't often reply to your threads because 101 people get there first and say all the things I was wanting to before I get a chance!

However, the one thing I miss in alot of your pics is a strong sense of shadow(e.g. a hard shadow for instance showing the nose profile etc.). I don't know if this would give your style less impact, but I think it would add a bit of depth and take away that effect which I think people are blaming on the airbrush.

Talking of which, do you use/own a conventional airbrush?

Yeah this progression is great, though (as said) the golden hair is still in the mold of your other pic's, which looks great, but hasn't changed with your new style transition.
I doubt you could have gotten any closer to this being feminine but still being able to pull this off as a guy...well done!.

Nice choice of complimentary colours.

You should stick to the style you want. If the smooth airbrush style makes you happy, then go on with it. Personally I really like your airbrush style, though this new picture proves that you can also achieve a more not so smooth style. But please don't mix them both in one piece

The hair just really doesn't fit to that face IMO

I believe you have to research the differences between a male and a womans face because yes it looks like a woman. There are spacific things that make a male look more male then a woman like the cheek lines, nose and mouth. If you study that before and use it with your sytle, your style will be just awsome! Cause I love your style!!!!

Yes... yeah, I can see now... the hair is too airbrushed for the face. But as I said - this thing is under development for me. It'll come.

As for the face... if anyone keeps bugging me about my male faces looking female after I've pointed out a /million/ times that I want them to look effeminate... I'm going to bite someone's head off. I've never aimed for a completely realistic style: I want the males I draw to look androgynous.

Hell, there was a guy I met in England that looked rather like this. He was the most beautiful boy I have ever seen. So what if I don't like buff guys. So what if the character I have pictured here is a rather vicious noble fop, who aims to let people mistakenly think him harmless. Yeah, he's girlish. He's got long pretty lashes and full lips. He doesn't have a square jaw and he doesn't have a low brow... let me let you in on a little secret... shh, it's a secret now, don't tell anyone...

Anyyywaaaaay... with that off my chest... cough, cough... I have to say I'm glad people seem to like the picture

This, as usual, is fantastic. But...

I personally feel that there is no proper middle ground between your smooth style and your rough style. I appreciate both styles as uniquely "you," and both styles are incredibly beautiful. Instead of trying to meet in the middle (which risks diluting the impact of both), why not do pieces in both styles?

Nice, Enalya. I love seeing this new experimentation of yours. And your figures poses are getting much better - referenced or not, you're obviously developing an eye for it.

Try not to restrict yourself within a singular style too much. If you like the ultra-smooth look, then create it, and if you like your textured feel, then by all means, use that style as well. That being said though, never be afraid to experiment and combine styles like this, the only thing you should fear is stagnation. (my 2c)

The only part of this picture that I think needs attention is the 'puffy sleeve thing' on his right arm. It feels a bit small and the perspective seems a bit off.

I'm quite fond of that textured background though, very nice.

Keep up this great work Enalya, it's got me itching to jump back on the wacom myself.

I hate to say this and make faustgfx's narcissism even worse, but your guys DO look kinda like him. Or, maybe he just happens to have the kind of face that's close to your ideal?

I can appreciate both rugged and pretty guys. I design/paint my male characters to have qualities of both.

Regarding finding your style: I struggle with the EXACT same thing. I agonize over the fact my work is too smooth, and needs more "characer". Being a huge fan of Sargent's just makes me feel even more strongly about it. There is one painter who I think blends the two very well. Anyways, I think if you want to try to put more character into your work, instead of intergrading the roughness into your work which is still mostly smooth, you should do some paintings that are just rough all around, get used to it and drop the old habbits, and THEN paint whatever you feel is your style. If you still prefer the smooth look after having painted more spontaneous works, you'll know that's what you REALLY prefer.

Well, to start it all off, i don't think i could ever match your style, which is one of the reasons I admire it so much. Wow.. what a neat technique you've got going here.. it looks almost translucent. Kinda pearly.

The rest of what I'm going to say is not quite what you're asking, but is something i've been thinking about since i read this post..

I've always stuck to the idea that it takes a lot of skill to be able to draw or paint different subjects and different techniques, which is how I started painting myself.. just trying to figure out how an artist achieves a certian effect. So when i hear that someone 'can draw anything'.. it really catches my interest. That's when i consider them an overall great artist.

So what i think i'm trying to say here is you should try characters that are not totally human-looking, maybe a blend of animal and human, with fur instead of hair, with scales instead of skin, that kind of thing. Maybe try a wrinkly troll or an old man.. or even yet.. a caveman!

*shrug*

It's something I tried a little while back, and seeing myself write this stuff, i'm probably going to take a taste of my own medicine and attempt it again

also, imo don't be preoccupied with defining and peg-holing your style, let each pic develop its own personality and stand up on its own. they all look great anyway.

i am appreciating how frequently you post a new pic. there are lots of other good artists on this board but they don't post enough new stuff!

but i would still like to see images of more of the body and ppl other than young androgens boys. mabe an old woman or a fat ugly guy. will contrebute to the realism of your work.
