I posted the beginnings of this in the progress forum and now I guess it's finished. I'm going for a children's book illustration here. Stanley is leaving the city where he was accidently taken via a produce truck about a year ago.And after many trials and hardships he is finally approaching home. Hope you like it and any feedback would be appreciated.
Thank You |

Look familiar?
Nice picture, but I was planning on using that as reference myself.... (Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I rather think I'm not....) You could've asked.
{EDIT} Okay. I saw the thread in the Work in Progress forum. I noticed that you DID at least mention that you got this from the Pets thread. I want you to know that I think it's a lovely image, and I'm not going to jump down your throat, or anything.... In fact, if you need to draw more rats, I have a whole pile of rat reference I'd be more than happy to lend you. But that PARTICULAR picture just happens to be my favourite one of my pet rat. I've been working on an image using that pose for the last day or two. In future, please, please, PLEASE ask before just taking people's images to use as reference. Most people will say yes. I would have offered you a similar picture, since I was already using that one. Remember, photographs, like artwork, belong to the people who've taken them. I know the photographer would never win a plagiarism suit against you (not that he'd even want to), but it's courtesy.
That said, it's a very good picture, and it really captures the mischievous nature of the rat in the picture. Except...If that rat were a Stanley...it would be a little more...er...developed...in the tail region...if you see what I mean.

The mouse looks good, and I think he goes well with the background... but he's in a different perspective than the background!
Looks kinda weird. Otherwise, good attention to details, and good lighting.

sorry Socar, I wasn't aware someone was using this image for a painting as well. I thought it was someone just posting a pic of their pet. The painting isn't being used commercially, it's just for fun. After all, I didn't copy the pic just as it was, as a matter of fact my image is very far from the actual photo. I simply used the pose of the rat, which probably could be found elsewhere on the net. And I wasn't even aware of the Stanley name being used, I've just done a search for gigerotta and found a webpage about some show that I dont think even exists in the states. So there is no connection there at all to the Stan in that show. Next time I'll ask the person about the photo first. But in my opinion I didn't violate in plagarism laws or copyrights in using the photo, but if you can prove me otherwise, I'll apologize for that as well. |

Hi Rag,
I really like your interpretation of the Rat. However, like those above mentioned, it doesn't match the perspective of the background (see the perspective in the pic socar posted). Also, the rat looks soaked while the background texture doesn't look wet at all. Further the lighting that produced such strong highlights on the rat would also have an effect on the background texture. Hope all this is helpful.
Radiater.
Ps. Perhaps he should be standing in a shallow puddle?! |

hi ya..cool
My opinion.... define the hand with the staffmore, either with contrast lighting or color, etc
the bag is flat...make one side darker (the side away from the light source)
under his feet here they meet the ground, they should be very dark...it doesnt seem like he is on the ground...and that is beside the perspective problem.
looks good though, just tweak it

I'm confused. I didn't say anything about the 'Stanley' name, except that a rat named Stanley would probably be male, and would therefore probably have...well...balls.
As for finding the image elsewhere on the net: Yeah, I'm sure you could. The fact remains, however, that you didn't. I'm not accusing you of plagiarism. What I AM saying is that it's polite to ask.
Anyway, I don't want to turn this into an argument. Just making a point.
Oh, and Mr. Pumpernickel: Yeah. The Lexx does kick some serious butt.

Mouse looks great! If you make the upper 2/3 of the background appear to be a vertical wall that will solve your perspective problem. Select the bottom 1/3 of the background and use perspective filter to make the floor appears flatter. |

Thanks for the comments everyone, but since this is Socar's pic I won't be updating further. As for the perspective, I did have some trouble with that and may change it for my own personal stuff, but I'm letting it stand as it is and let it sink into page 2 abyss. |

No, no, man--by all means, please do finish up with it. I've already almost finished the picture I was doing with a different reference. This one's all yours. Seriously. I love the picture. I was slightly annoyed at first, because you didn't ask, and because I was very over-tired. But I am not annoyed now, and I think you've done great justice to the reference. I think you ought to finish. If anything, I should apologize for snapping at you over something so silly. Please accept my apology, and don't leave such a good image dangling. |
