A rose by any other name...

He loved her... desperately so. It was an obsession that tore his heart apart. He wooed her, helplessly, giving her gifts that cost him more than most men could ever afford. She, coldly, rejected his offers. She was not interested. Her heart did not burn for him as his did for her. At the end of his rope, he decided to seek out a lady he had heard of. A lady who could cast powerful magic spells and grant wishes.

"Lady," he said, as he confronted her "I wish to buy from you a rose... a rose that is everything my lady friend has ever dreamed of. It has to be perfect... its scent must be intoxicating, its petals softer than silk... " She nodded, smiled, and then whispered.
"Are you certain? Are you absolutely certain that you want a rose that is everything she has ever dreamed of?"
"I am as certain as I will ever be.", he responded.

So, the lady crafted a rose, a magic rose... it had a beauty untold of. It was a silky, soft white colour and its fragrance made his head spin with its power. Happy with his decision, the man took the rose to his beloved one, and presented it to her. As he had hoped, she was thrilled with it - amazed with it. Her eyes glimmered with joy.

Only it was not a normal rose. It was a rose that was everything she had ever wanted. And as they stood there - he hoping that she now loved him - the rose changed into a young man. A young man, with another rose caught between his teeth, and with dark eyes watching them from under long lashes. He was everything she ever wanted... alas, he did not want her. So, while both the man and the woman cried, the young man with the rose left.

And thus we learn never to trust ladies who claim to grant wishes... because they might be Fae, like this one was... and the wishes they grant never turn out as we expect.

Okay. That was a way too long thing to put in my topic, but what the hey - no one will read it anyway. Here's the picture:

and the promised fae boy (just a character portrait):

hehe, ego running away with you again, faustgfx?

An, hey, I read the story. Personally, I think more people should write more about their pictures, offer more background. It makes for a much more interesting post, offers a deeper look into whatever the artist wanted to show, and wipes away any misconceptions that may be brewing. (well, most of them, anyway.)

Anyway, skipping past the usual bundles of praise, I just thought I'd add that the rose greenery looks a bit on the bright side. Also, I'd like to have seen some thorns on that sucker, would have added to his anguish... although, that might just be me.

Cut down on the crack, he does not look like you at all.

I like the top one. Its very stylish. Couldve done without the flower though.

Enayla, I think these are the best pics I've seen from you (and I've seen nearly all you've posted here).

The first one is astonishing (rose included). I don't know what I like more: the face of the guy, the hair, the palette, the expression, everyting is from a #1.

About the 2nd: the wings are simply unbelievable. How on earth did you have the patience to paint that? Could you explain the process please, oh come on , please, please...

I'm glad everyone likes these I'm also happy to be back and drawing in my own style.

I don't like the sketchy style. It's supposed to be soooooft and sweeeeet and glittery. Wheeh!

Weeeelll... the wings:
Open a separate image in adobe photoshop. Add a second layer and draw on that one (the layer underneath is preferably black because it makes it easier to see). Have a window open with a picture of the wing of a dragonfly. Look at all the lines and be inspired by them - draw lots of tiny patterns on the separate layer until you have the shape of the wing. Copy. Repeat four times. Move to actual picture. Rotate until it fits. Make separate layers for the soft, half transparent colouring of the wings. Draw lots of tiny sparkly thingies on the wings. Well... uhm... done. Sounds simple, eh? Well, it's not.

And yes, "A rose by any other name is still a rose" (I think that's the exact quote, I won't bet on it though) is very much Shakespeare Glad someone noticed.

Yes both very good. The wings must have taken ages. You should paint the scene in which the lady is giving the rose to the guy. I could imagine the expression on his face! That would be cool. I like the background story stuff. I drew a character, then based the story after I drew her.
Very interesting.

Both very lovely...Wow, I just can't get over the way you do skin and hair. Any possible way you could do a tutorial on the way you CG sometime? I'd be so awesome to see step-by-step how you work. Keep up the spiffy paintings ^_^...

Very good as usual, Enayla... I like the idea of writing a story around your pictures.
Just a quick crit: on the second pic, I think the hollow between his clavicle and trapezius muscle should be a little more pronounced(?).. Now it's a tiny detail and I'm not sure this would make the picture any more "attractive", but it was just something I noticed.

Maybe it's just me, but the first pic's neck seems to be a bit too thick for the physique of the rest of the face.... Excellent everything else, I'm beyond impressed.

oh, what a talanted girl u r...

however i think that u r great in drawing smooth young men but i would be happy to see how u manage with an unattractive grown up man. i'd love to see that cuz older ppl usually have more character in their faces. i would be happy to see u manage in different subject and broading your talent.

such a wonderfull work u have

Very nice--both of them. Especially the lad with the rose. I can't think of anything I'd change about that one. It's excellent. Just excellent. Maybe a few thorns, and some blood...oh, wait, no...that'd be if -I- drew it.

The second one is also lovely. The pose is elegant & graceful, and the wings...your hard work paid off. One thing, though--the cloth of his trousers is not in as sharp resolution as his body, especially the hands and face, and as a result, it comes off looking a little flat & amorphous. I think if you put as much work into the clothes as you did into the rest of this picture, it would be well-nigh perfect.

veeery nice pics. i like the style, the drawing, the colors. especially the wings look incredible. thanks for posting how to draw such magic stuff.
my only complain: to me the first pic looks better without the flower. but the flower belongs to the fairytale.

The craftmanship you reveal in these pictures is awesome Enayla. Truly a modern day Alphonse Mucha, if I may be so bold.

Enayla, I've really got to hand it to you; I've been trying to perfect that androgenous (sp?) look with both my men and women for a hell of a long time...You seem to have mastered it... Keep up the good work.
