I did this pic to practice creating details and colors from my mind with a small B&W pic as an overall reference. I was thinking sunlight when choosing the colors. After I finished it I found a somewhat larger reference of the same pic on a different site, (still smaller than my drawn pic), and used it to try to correct a few things.

The likeness still isn't quite there. Also I found this exercise a bit harder than I thought, and gave up with it like this:

Reference:

btw, It's Monica Potter (ConAir, Without Limits, Patch Adams)

Crits/Comments/Anyting..
Thanks -JK

Bizarre, I recognised her straight away and I've hardly seen her before.

Very nice!

See the harder shadow shape of the chin go into the softer, rounder jaw area and then go hard again into where the jaw bone goes into the ear? Play up those differences. I did too much here to make the point. If you look at the jaw, there really is no line there at all, just an area of shadow.

Same idea on the lower lip. You have it outlined, but there really is a lost edge there.

Also look at the lit area of the far side of the neck, keep that nice and crisp. There is a lot of contrat in that shape and it tells a lot about the shape of the lower face, so it calls out for a little more care.

BTW, I spoke with Spooge Demon and he and goodbrush will be back soon. He's not happy about his site getting yanked. But ask him about it when he gets here

Good work, Kreuze. Aside from the points Mr. Meat Sack made, you've got a couple little anatomy issues. The main thing that stands out is her eyes - the shape doesn't quite match the reference photo, which is giving her a bit of a surprised-deer-in-headlights look. Also, her eyelids are somewhat lacking in volume. Erm. Instead of explaining it myself, just look at this.

It's mostly her lower eyelids that have the problem, but both could use a bit of improvement.

Heh, and welcome back, Craig.

Oh yeah, I was going to comment on your colors too, but I sort of forgot.

It looks a little too saturated, and a little too brown. And it seems like the color of her hair and of her skin are a bit too close. If you can find some other reference pics of her, I bet her skin is a lot more pale than in your version. You might also want to try getting some cooler shadows in there, especially in her hair.

Good work.
Though the chin looks a little pointier than the reference. I'm not familiar with the actress, but she kinda has a bit of Julia Roberts in her! (actress and the painting )

Thanks for the feedback!

Lukias: Thanks. Hmm... I wonder if I'd recognize her if I didn't know who it was, I'm not sure

Dthind: Thanks, interesting way of putting it

meat_sack: Thanks for taking the time to give me a few pointers . Good advice on which edges are lost and which should be accentuated, it's something I need practice with. Tell Spooge I'm looking forward to his next Masterpiece

Resistanz: Thanks

Waylon: Anatomy issues in my drawings are a given. If they're only small I'm happy Interesting eye tutorial link, I wish it was more organized though.
The actress herself does sometimes seem to have a deer-in-headlights look to me, maybe not as much in this reference.

SporQ: Thanks

Nex: Glad my thread is helping people
(Maybe the thread isn't mine, but it does have my name next to it )

[edit]
Zeonithus: Thanks. Chin & Jawline are probably a little off, some of it may be what meatsack mentioned.
[/edit]

No crits so far on my color choice, so I think I may have done a decent enough job there. I've been trying to learn face/hair coloring and head/neck anatomy recently, getting better at it.

I'd probably be happier with this one if I didn't spend a while fixing messed up forms and colors to get it to this point.
