I made these.
half worked on paper, half in photoshop.
so, what makes them fine art? don't you think there is quite a gray area?

hmmm...
Illustration is more about telling a story or conveying someone eleses story/idea through a stylized art.
Look at the 19th century artists, alot of the more famous ones where called "history" painters, because they would paint these elaborate paintings of mthology or actual historical events. This was certianly Illustration, but we view it as fine art because of the time period it was created and possibly because of the people who painted them.

The image you posted is more fine art than illustration. There is no "context" as to what's going on. It's more of a personal image and it really doesn't relate to a story that's obvious.

Look at artists like Cornwell and Rockwell and then look at Monet or Picasso, see any differences..
Just my opinion..before this gets moved to general disc.

I think that the reason a common perception that digital art is graphic is because the digital medium is most commonly applied to create graphic art. Fine art can be made with either a tablet or a pencil, what make's it fine art is the quality and nature of the image, not the medium it was created in.

I think fine art is any art not used or intended to be used commercially. So that fine art is personal. The medium is irrelevant
