Heya people,
I've been rather lazy lately with the posting....but anyway, I have still been drawing
I don't know if any of you recall that spaceranger I did, which I did because me and micke gave eachother some tasks that we thought the other one would struggle with. This time I have gotten a new assignment...to do "a roman and egyptian battleship at war" I never liked boats, so this was a good assignment to get ( I would guess chester, ewooz and micke will post there picture soon too).
here it is...
Well, happily we were allowed to find reference for this...because, who am I to know how a roman and egyptian battleship would look like? ..I was about to put cannons on, before I realised this was the time before gunpowder excisted.
here's the reference and inspiration I used...(incase anyone would be interessted in seeing that..not that it has any direct link with the picure though)
crits and comments are very welcome !

often creativity is the art of putting two or more things you already know together to bring about something totally new; hence fusion |

I guess Micke thought wrong then eh? Because the only struggle I see going on is in the picture. Beautiful. I love your stuff. You rock Joachim, you really do.

Whoohaa, trying out new things is great. It's the best thing ever to happen to my painting habits, and thanks for that go to your example :)
I'd like to see the surface of water more defined, and fishnet-like reflections it might cast on the wooden sides. This painterly style of yours is getting much better. At some point it started to look spoogeish, but has now taken a way of its own.
The reference pics have also been put to good use. Huuu, I wonder if your games are gonna take advantage of the painting skills you guys have.
hmmrm.. im trying to find more to crit about, but the style of the pic is very solid.

Nice work my friend. Like the colors and values... very well done! (oh, maybe the sails shouldn't be as thick... maybe some backlight might make its way through... but I could be wrong since I don't know what materials sails were made of...silk or pigskin?)

Joachim are you sure you've never painted battleships before, cause this is a nice piece...oddly reminant of Age of Empires...that's a good thing. Anyhow, great pic. |

Wow Joachim! This is great!
I love the "3D" effect you've achieved in this image by giving more vivid colors to certain parts of the image (the "heads" of the ships).
Really inspiring.

wow, so many replies and so many kind words, I don't know where to begin. I would start to say thank you all.. !! -hope it's ok that I don't give a written thx to everyone, I'm still grateful.
gecko, yes I agree on that. I've always found water difficult to understand...so many different things to keep in mind.
frost, agree on that also. Probably they could look good being a bit more transparent. I too don't know what fabric they used at that time. But, it's more than 2000 years ago, so I would guess it's quite a bit thicker than they are today...but still, I think I could make them a bit more transparent.
To do these kind of exercises, is really good, I think. You are being forced to do something you'd think you're not capable of, but because it's something that you have agreed on doing, you can't back off. And, then you must do things a way you are usually not doing. Kinda like you thing a nose would look like that in that angle, but that's just because that's the way your brain works, but if you get the chance to do it differently because someone forces you too, you kinde learn you brain to understand that things are often different than you would think. SO, therefor, to do these kind of things can be really helpful. And, sometimes you can get surprised of yourself, personally I was surprised when I did this one. Though it has a lot of errors, I'm sure, I found it rather quick and easy to do. I don't think I spent more than about 4 hours on it.
sorry, I'm rambling.
gustav, hehe...yeah sure, come on over
We should have these kind of tasks here at the forum, I just don't know how we should have pulled it off...because it's important that everyone gets a task that is suited for the right artist (meaning abs. not suited) .
