OK, used Max 2.5 and Nendo. This was a freelance gig for Wizards of the Coast - nice client if you can get the work (one of the few companies that respect artists). Anyway, it's an old image but I thought I would post. Ed-- |

**Hey Ed I really like your 3d work and I hope you always keep posting it.**
I wish I could post mine, since my 3d is my best stuff but it's all "top secret" until the game ships. You know how that is. =(
I notice you used NUENDO? How does that compare with Lightwave? I know you're familiar with Modeler so I thought since you know both perhaps you could compare? I can't imagine modeling in anything but Lightwave's Modeler. I tried modeling in Max but I almost felt like I was in 3dsR4 =(

Yeah, I know how it is. Or I'ld post some of my 2D stuff here..but, can't. Nendo is pretty fast and intelligent as far subdivision goes - obviously some of the technology is derived from Mirai. Lightwave modeler rocks as you know, and fun..sometimes I'ld lose sense of time because of it. Nendo exports out to both .3ds and .obj - so you just import into Lightwave using LW's .obj import. Max..ah heheh...in someways better overall than LW but their modeler is really clunky still. I can't get a precision feeling when I'm modeling in it like in LW. One of my favorite feature in LW's modeler is their MetaNurbs feature. Just my two cents. Ed--

It took awhile...anyway, make a tube or cable using loft tool, turn to side and render out. Once rendered, bring it into Photoshop. Make a vertical serated lines on top of the render using it as a guide - making sure the format is tall enough to wrap, then make a dupe and turn to b/w - this will be your bump map (minus the original render). Bring both into Max..apply texture first to the tube/cable using cylinder UVW Map. Here you may have to rotate to make sure the stripings wrap around the tube correctly..you can even make it askew so it wraps like a screw thread. Once you like the way it wraps, apply bump map using instance so it matches up to the texture map exactly. Using some various deformation tools you can bend the cable around (make sure you have enough geometries or it will look low-poly). There are other ways I'm sure but it's the way I did it here. Ed--
