Some of you may recognize this from a couple of months back (I think?). At the time I had posted it up incomplete.

I was pleased that I got some compliments on my wolf tile for the tile game so it inspired me to try to finish this up. Yeah I know, I didn't make the wolf specifically for the game, but I made up for it by doing two other tiles

I think I would like to go back later and tweak some things but not now. And if I ever go back and polish it off, I probably won't post it here. That's why I'm putting this in the finished section. This is as done as it gets for you guys

Crits and Comments are always welcome, as usual.

Thanks!

Beth

Absolutely beautiful Jezebel. And no worries it blended just fine with the other tile. This is probably the best image I've seen on this forum in a long time. Not to demean the others, but this runs right up along with Robert Bateman in my opinion. Could you share your techniques for the fur, for me that's mostly what keeps me from drawing mammals. I must have missed the other thread about this image, too bad too.. it's loverly.

Well. I do have a few comments to make. Your perspective seems a bit off, (from muzzle to forehead and back, you do not keep a consistent perspective,) look how its right ear is much higher then its left. The wolf is snearing, and usually when a wolf snears their ears go down together.

Just some nitpicks on an already well painted image.

Very nice, Jezebel! The fur is done very well. Nice depth of field effect, too.
I think it lacks specular highlights on eyes, nose, gums and maybe teeth, to give them a subtle wet appearance. The highlight in the eye could be just a little sharper, IMO.
Just my 2c...

Fantastic job!!

I've been a bit lazy with my images, choosing underwater scenes for a good reason - no fur!!!

I'd be really interested to know what methods/tricks you used for the fur on your wolf, or was it just old fashioned elbow grease?

I saw this in process on your site and was about to ask if you'd done anymore so here's my answer. Once again, beautiful work.

Wee, replies!

faustgfx- *double blink*

Rag - Thank you so much, that comment is very appreciated. I'm so flattered that I'm thinking about starting another image, hehe. Perhaps a bird this time. As for the tutorial, there really isn't any easy way to go about doing it. The only special thing I do is turn the fade on. My tablet isn't very sensitive and this is a technique I used when I colored with the mouse. It's basically just a matter of drawing tons of lines on top of eachother... it takes a while. I haven't found a quick way to do it yet.

Sahripper - You don't know how many people have suggested that! Thanks for the compliments.

the_monkey - Wally, huh?

fusion - You think you were scared? I had to stare at him for hours on end!

SoMK - Thanks!

Kolt - I think the little bits of saliva are my favorite part! That and the wet spots on the nose, you can't see it too well at this resolution though. I lied when I said it was full-sized, it's not quite there.

Steve Goad - Wow thanks! I only wish I was a pro though. I do have a webpage up, check my sig.

Ragnarok - Thank you!

Fontainne - Thanks for the comments, I wish I could go back and rework this taking into consideration the things you mentioned, but I am completely burned out on this image at the moment. And I feel bad for saying that after reading Liquid!'s response to Ivey's thread in WiP, hehehe. I appreciate the crit

TheMilkMan - That's quite a compliment, I really appreciate it!

Jaymo - Thanks! The one crit that I seem to have gotten again and again is that the eye should be sharper. Perhaps that's one detail I can polish before putting away this image

Oli_D - And there's a good reason I haven't done underwater scenes. I am terrible at painting water! I thought your dolphins were gorgeous! Like I told Rag, there's nothing really special to making the fur. It really is more elbow grease than anything.

GiGGer - That's my photo ref of course, hahaha. One of my favorite books sitting on my desk. I fear that if I tried to draw this from life, I wouldn't be here to tell about it today!

I'm so excited to have seen this many compliments! I hope everyone keeps them coming because they really inspire me.

Beth

Man, there is nothing cooler than a snarling wolf! I don't even want to know how long you took to paint all those strands of hair. Can you say carpal tunnel. . .

Seriously though, you kicked some major ass on this one.

GiGGer - Could you edit your first post and take out the first image? It's not loading so I think it's slowing the thread down quite a bit :/

Yay, more replies too!

digitalmar - Actually although it took a while, once I get into fur-mode I can move along quite nicely and hardly notice that my hand is slowly detaching from my wrist

Nex - *grins* Thanks

Beth

Jezebel: There's no doubting that your pic is absolutely awesome. A fine piece of work.

However, the grimmacing teeth are the only bit of the pic that stand out as being kinda akward. I think it's because the back teeth seem parallel to the viewer. Perhaps the yellow colour of the eye is a little too intense.

The fur is wonderfully rendered.

note - could we please have an end to the photo ref witch hunts. This has been debated time and time again. Unless there is a serious issue with regard to tracing etc. there really is no need to that. Post a URL if you must, anything else is sabotaging someone's post.

Dives - Thanks!

Ceenda - I love your work so it's nice to have you responding to my piece. I imagine that the issues you mention with the teeth probably tie in the the perspective issues that Fontainne mentioned earlier. I'm very bad with perspective

Rag - I'm glad you like my image so much! I won't even touch upon the marriage comment

Gigger - Thanks for the tip on the newsgroup thing. But do you still think you could edit your post back there to take out that img tag? hehe. I feel like it's really making the page load slower than it should. Thanks.
