This was a tonal exercise we did at college. We had to reproduce a black and white photograph, so yes, photo reference was used. I scanned the original pencil drawing into photoshop and adjusted the levels.
Any crits or suggestions would be great. Hope you like it.

it's lookin' good. if you have more, post them. this type of pics is really nice and a very good exercise of shading and volume control.

Thanks Bizarde, I'm going to be doing more over the next couple of days, and I will post them as soon as Im done.
Greenpeach, well, he is actually sitting inside a van . . . his hand is on the rolled down window. He's probably looking at the other gypsy kids playing with their Pokemon or something.
