I though I`d share these with you. These are just a small selection of my oldest conan covers. They where all painted with oils on board or canvasboards sized 61x45cm
Most of them are 4-6 years old

These are scanned from the prints at not the best quality. So do you think my newer digital art is better, or have I lost something going from oils to painter? Mind the fact they look twice as good in reallife than these crappy prints/scans.

veb, i'd have to say that technically, your skills have improved, so it's hard to say if it's the computer or time that has made you better. i'd like to see some recent oil scans if you have any. it would provide a better comparison

Yes, my general art skillz have improved since these, no doubt. Some help from unlimited "undo`s" though

Recent oils look like..err suck. I no longer have an art room, since my 2 year had to take that room. And trying to make oils in a livingroom, just does not work. Although I can do acrylics(but the success rate/vs output time just does not justify it)
Digital work is more done out of neccesity rather than personal prefs.
I`ll scan some printed digital covers too, some day, so you can see how much more blurry they end up looking than these above.
But they sure are easier to deliver to the publisher...just send a .jpg.

Man..... those covers just wanna make me go pick up a copy of conan..... in whatever wierd language it is. And wow, that is very nicce oil painting. Very tidy and crisp. Simply amazing.

Looks good (if a little dated). The second looks the best to me because it makes me interested in the story. On the first one I think it would look more natural to place his head back and in the same line of thrust as the entire body. Its different though.

Veb I like your Painter work better, no belittlement toward your traditional work...but your digital stuff imo just has more life to them.

I'm afraid I kinda have to go with Plop on this question.
Yes, I do think that you have improved alot of things going digital. Composition and anatomical wise your digital paintings are much better, but on the other hand these are painted. You can touch them. They have substance and therefore life. That single thing makes me always prefer traditional paintings over digital. How about combining the two? Set the composition and work out the anatomy and print it out, transfer it to illustrationboard or whatever you prefer and then paint. Combining the best of two worlds I think. I have done this myself a couple of times and I find it quite nice... Though I don't have the painting skills you have....

Another thing also - you say that the digital paintings turn out more blurred in print... How uncool is that??? You know why? resolution maybe? or somerhing else??? I would really like to see the scans of those to compare...

Veb- Thanks for posting these man. These are alot of fun to see. I don't go so far as to say your mistakable for Frazetta but the style resemblence is uncanny. Usually I feel annoyed when I see people (apparently) mimicing Frazetta's style but usually people don't do it so well. You have given us a new view of an ancient world that FF was tuned into. It's like you stepped into his world took a walk in it and set up your easle not only giving us a new view of it but making it your own. You have my respect in buckets full.

First, I feel a little silly giving such an acomplished illustrator my opinion, but you asked. I know that traditional media lends itself better to guesture and mark making, and I think that is evident in your transition. What can any of us do about that until the interface technology improves? Also, I really enjoyed the color variety in the Conan covers. Maybe an expanded color palette would be good.(?)

Although, crit aside, I think your stuff is full-on in tradition of good fantasy art.

Wow Vebjorn, supreme sweetness, how big are the originals? I'm liking that second one with Exodus, thanks for posting these. Is this comic related to the Conan comic here in the US?

Thanks guys. They are they reason I got into making conan covers. The editors kinda wanted me to emulate Frazettas work. They knew they would not get any new stuff from him, and when they saw my stuff, they kinda encouraged me along instead of telling me to get my own style. Even know, it`s almost impossible for me to make something which is pure fantasy without resembling the Frazetta style. These are offcourse much more influenced than my recent stuff, but they where ment to be. Heck I even had Frazetta reference all over the palce in my study. Now I prefer not to..it grabs me immidiatly. I just open the Icon and Legacy books like a "bible" and go..ohh..at his work. The man is so good. I really encourage people to get these books, because for many years I`d only seen the crappy printed calenders and posters(not the ones you can order from the man himself) and never liked his stuff(Joachim probably still remember me liking Boris`work better) But as I got to see good prints, and his better work like the Deathdealer artwork, I knew that when it comes to Fantasy art and Conan..Frank was original and a true talent.

Hehehe...hey u guys, I met Frazetta back in '94 at his house in Pennsylvania. It was the most amazing experience I've ever had, beside picking up his first "The Art of Frank Frazetta" book. I'll post the pictures I've taken because some of youz won't believe me. Anyway, he is wonderful guy and genuinely talented artist who's very humble and is overwhelmed with how his work is being received. Stay tuned... Ed--

It`s the norwegian edition of the old savage sword comics. Norway is the country that Conan sells best actually. Making covers for it, does not pay much, since they have free access to all marvels old cover. But luckily for me, the editor prefers to give the fans soemthing fresh;-)

ED Lee, As for the pics from your frazetta visit. Looking forward to your post. Maybe you can write a bit about it too;-)

There's a lot of compromises to make with digital painting (as well as advantages) but I think you still make it look very much like your oils. Of course, not in person though, I'd much rather see a painting then a digital print, and if time was no issue I would much rather work with real paint then digital coloring. I think you should keep up both methods.
