Anybody know that old sidescroller game ABUSE and where I could eventually get it?

Found it on e-bay for 10$ but a. I have no credit card for payment; b. the shipping and toll would cost me much more than the game itself.

I know the source code is available for free, because crack.com went bankrupt, so I thought maybe the game is too.

Btw, anybody here that likes sidescrollers too, or do you all think the market for 2d-jump&runs and sidescrollers is dead and thats good so?

I remember abuse, I got it in a 3-pack with Fade to Black (Flashback 2) and one of the Crusader games. Unfortunately my cd got lost. (I couldn't even begin to count how many game disks or cd's ive lost or scratched)

Here is the Abusepage at The Underdogs. Check it out, it's a great site.

I love sidescrollers, and unfortunately, yes I think they are dead, i wish they weren't, but they are.

My favorite sidescroller's though, are they ones where you could hang off the side of platforms.

I absolutely loved blackthorne, flashback, and out of this world.

Jump & run sidescrollers are all good too though Mario series, Metroid series, Sonic series, were all badass.

But my favorite sidescroller (or pretty much any game for that matter) would definitely have to be the ODDWORLD series.

ABUSE was pretty cool... I have it at home... got it off some "abandonware" site, where they hold all the old games that are no longer sold... I got tons of old classics that I could no longer find... I'll try to post a link tonight (in some 9 hours or so).

Thx Subhuman and Frost, youre the best.

Good to see that there are people outside who still like sidescrollers.

I find it strange somehow that games like that or adventures die out because management thinks that those genres wont sell. Me would like to know if such a game would sell today if created with new technology.

I remember Abuse, it has a great interface. There is a new version of it (or maybe I should say a remake) with better graphics and all.

I think that making a 2d-adventure game that corresponds todays technology standars (at least 800x600x16) is way too expensive and there's no company that would be ready to take so big risk. If the game has -- let's say -- about 80 backgrounds and 40 characters then how many artists do you need? Lots. Of course the markets are much bigger now and the game would sell more than 5 years ago. I tend to buy every decent 2d-adventure game, but I think not everyone does that (am I wrong?). Management decides to do a new and exciting realtime strategy game they think would sell because Starcraft did too...

btw. Heart of Darkness is the best looking platform game ever IMHO.

Man I loved Heart of Darkness. I was glad they decided to complete and release it, not abandon it.
The only thing to complain about was, that I finished it way too fast.

I would use a 3d-engine(maybe with comic-shader?) for creating a sidescroller or adventure game, because of 2d being too expensive and more possibilities in 3d, but without the 360 look-around-thingie or crappy keyboard controls, just good old mouse.
And not with bad 3d-models with textures even worse, like in monkey island 4.

But who asks me?!

Anyone play through Flashback?

I remember that game was so immersive...it was basically a futurisic version of Prince of Persia, with a Blade Runner twist. I liked the simplicity of it, you never picked up any new weapons, just your trusty pistol throughout the whole game.

Hell no! I got stuck in some subway like 5 years ago and i can't play it now because its got this weird speed issue, i think its screwed up even with moslo.

I beat Fade to Black (part 2) it was 3d and was a really good sequel, they had a cut scene for each way you would die, there was like a million, i would get killed just to see a new cutscene.

Out of this world was also made by Delphine (Flashback, Fade to Black) and it was extremely cool, i loved the polygonal animation and intro was amazing. And the scenery was badass (along with the story) The end is crazy.

Heart of Darkness was a badass game, the animation was just too cool, but i think the 3d prerendered cutscenes kinda ruined it. the 3d wasn't that great, and neither was the framerate, and to top that the story was a little bit too childish for me. But the game was awesome indeed.

Blackthorne - anyone play that??? It was made by blizzard way back when and interplay(i think) published, man it was so cool, you would have these shotgun battles with orcs and shit, and to dodge their fire you had to go back into the shadows ( a la hunter/hunted) but it got way too hard after the jungle level.

Good 3D [but gameplay 2D] platformer: Pandemonium. I loved that game =] never played the sequel though. It's available on PSX and PC.

Too bad 2D games are dying out, though some games made the jump from 2D to 3D flawlessly. Mario64 is a good example.

Though with the GBA coming out there will be enough cool platformers to play
