Everybodys into markers. They are so cool, and so expensive. I bought a milky gel roller on the advice of a friend, and played around with it a little. Creates nice highlights, but I think I'll take Get-Up-Kid's advice and get a brush and some guache.
Any comments?

topeira: Thanks for the compliment. I'm using Prismacolor Markers, but I hear Tria Markers are excellent too. I haven't seen any around though.

Dang! Seems like you're really getting into it. Yeah, Tria's are good - little expensive but worth the money. Also to think about is having a large stick of pastel like blue (or any other color) and gently rub across the top of the page, and with a tissue smudge it carefully across the top half of the page to create a gradation. It's OK to go over the markers. Once that's done go in the areas where the lights are hitting, and with a kneaded eraser erase those areas. After, take a white gouache and paint in the edges where the lights are catching the harshest, (usually if it's a hard surface). This technique usually takes out the harshness of contrasty marker drawings and make it more readable...I believe. Just a suggestion. Ed--

I think brushes are much easier to control. It's hard to control the flow out of a gel roller, and I think that even when you are good with a gel roller you get much cleaner results with a brush. There is a steep learning curve with a brush. Just my opinion, though. You should work with what gives YOU the best results, so experiment. |

Hey Skeezer --looking good! You're leaving me drooling here! Hmmm... maybe I'll do a mech piece next.
As for me, I've sworn off marker stuff because they're too expensive and the smell makes my head swim. I miss the feel of the paper though.
Keep 'em coming!

...well another load of cool conceept art...hell I'm sitting here dwelling over Dumont's marker exercises and can't see improvement - any tips?
btw I think that's also the reason ffor my poor skilled cg art - I noticed some paralelles between working with markers and painting in PS.
*@ all germans here - do you know a better marker type than copics? - those suck but I haven't seen any alternate marker labels yet * |

I hope you die! Man! Those are so good! I just bought some french grey prisma's (they are expensive) and have been fouling around with them lately, but can't come close to your skill. What colors did you use? Looks like warm and cool greys to me.
I will post some of my work once I finish setting up my new computer tommorow.

`What sort of people live about here?' asked Alice.
`In that direction,' the Cat said, waving its right paw round, `lives a Hatter: and in that direction,' waving the other paw, `lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.'
`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad...' |

I saw these drawings on Francis' forum. Very cool...looks like you picked up markers pretty well. Are you taking classes for this or is all this self taught? Either way, looking good.
What the heck is Tombo (sp?) markers? I've never heard of them. Hmm...i still prefer prisma. Tho AD markers are extremely juicy...but they are toxic. And i also prefer a brush over a roller....but either way works.

Hey guys, lots of replies, so I'll get started.
Ed Lee: Thanks, I'll see if I can find some pastels
Get-up Kid: I think I'll see what I can do with the gel rollers, but eventually I'll experiment with the guache and brush.
TheMilkMan: Thanks. I've heard of Tombo, but never seen them, sounds interesting.
Pat: Can't wait to see it
Jucas: I'm using warm gray, cool gray, and french gray. I just started combining them, and I really like the effect I'm getting. Thanks for the compliment I think
Feng: No classes, just messing around with markers, with the Episode I art book as my guide
the_monkey: I layer my markers, the effect you're talking about is just me leaving the backlegs at the beginning stages. The more ink I lay down the more finished the piece looks. Post your work
Everyone else, thanks for the compliments, they're much appreciated.

I've been experimenting with marker lately.. what kind of paper do you use? My biggest problem is bleed-thru of the ink.. not just through the paper but the strokes blur on regular sketchpad...
any help would be greatly appreciated.

buy marker paper, its thicker and smoother, prevents bleeding.
