Here's the Hellboy sketch I mentioned a bit back.

For those who don't know who Hellboy is. It is a comic book character created by Mike Mignola. If you haven't seen it or read it, you should definitely check it out. Check out www.hellboy.com for more info.

Any crits/comments welcome.

Kick ass! Very cool looking piece. Did you see my crappy sketch I did of this fella the other day? Almost the same pose.. well a head shot and mine is in pencil.. not as detailed.. but almost the same. This looks cool though. Reminds me to order those TPBs.

I still hate you.

"Got my face lacquered up and I'm ready to fight evil."

Seriously though that's a great rendition. I'm sure Mike would love to see it himself.

Uber cool. I like it.

I don't know anything about the character. My first thought on the things above his eyes were goggles. But some imagination, I'm guessing they are cut off horns, aren't they.

The proportions are supposed to be exaggerated too, I would imagine. But still the eyes and nose seem awfully small compared to the chin, brow, and overall head size.

Are you going to leave the coat, "sketchy"?

And Nex,
Not "Liquid", it's "Chris". LOL.

Thanks for the comments don't be shy about letting me know what you don't like tho

CHAPEL I hadn't seen it, but looked it up. Took a while to find since you didn't put "hellboy" in the header I think the sketches you did are great, and think you should keep doing more of them. I would also recommend that you try to do more "life-drawing", whether that is portrait work from life, or figures. Just walk around with a sketchbook and sit down at a mall. Its a great way to meet girls anyhow. Trust me, it'll all help with the coloring in the end.

BURN I don't really get to draw a whole lot, so working out the style is always a bit difficult, but I love Hellboy so the striations around the mouth just sort of made sense. The mouth itself was a tough call, because if you look at Mike Mignola's original its much more graphic, thus harder to implement when you try to be a bit more "realistic"

DEAN One can dream

BUB I think I might have a very early sketch of it. I'll check, I'll post it if I can find it.

ESH Silly!

SERA Yeah those are cut-off horns. The proportions are definitively exaggerated. Its sort of a judgement call, what you want to emphasize. Mike makes the nose fairly small, but doesn't make the chin this thick I just felt he looked more powerful with a thick heroic chin

I was going to tighten it all up at first, but then I decided not to. To me the important thing is the face, and I really don't care all that about the coat. So why bother

Thanks again guys!

I think the chest should at least be more finished. Kinda detracts from the pic. The rest being loose is ok.

Man, that is really great! What a wonderful interpretation of Hellboy.

The colors in the Hellboy comic book are very flat (but still beautiful), and your image has so much texture to it. It's a nice departure.

A huge pat on the shoulder to ya.

And what's with all these kats who've never read Hellboy! Get your asses out there and buy some! You're missing out on one of the best books being published... along with Blade of the Immortal and anything by Chris Ware or Dave Cooper.

Matt

I fnished the chest a bit more (happy chapel?! )... and a few minor tweaks.

BUBONIC - Here's the prelim sketch I had done. As you can see quite a bit changed. I was going to make him quite a bit stockier at first, but then opted for the "smarter" look...

really really nice liquid, def. the best picture I've seen that you've made "alone" yet. Also, even though it has your "liquid" style, I think you made it a bit different than the usual way you paint, less highlights I mean....which looks very cool too

Wooo new desktop (replacing FFX cover :P) .. I've had a Liquid! desktop for ages now.. thanks

I don't know if it is appropriate or not, of if you feel comfortable, but could we have a larger version to drool over? I'd really like a nice full size desktop of this masterpiece.. or the FFX cover for that matter ~~~ It would be much appreciated, but not expected

hey, cool pic. i love the reds.. once again:
how the heck do the reds come off like that? the only thing i dont like is the chips in the horns. still very cool. the drawing itself is very platt-ish to me although i dont know why. keep it up, and i hope to copy more of your work....hahaa just kidding.

I love Hellboy and Mike Mignolas graphic approach. This a great piece...love the vivid colors and the definition of it.

Oh yeah...like Milkman said, where is Soulsaga and heard maybe another Eve?

JOACHIM Thanks! I'm trying different stuff from the usual just for kicks really

TREE I'll make one, but I won't put it out until I get my Hellboy Sketchbook online. I'll make it a "downloadable" off of there But thanks for the nice compliment!

CHAPEL Yeah it was a good call! I'll be fixing the mouth too.

POPPY Sorry.. Feel free to eye-drop them. Hope that helps.

RAGE/MILK Blasphemy!! No one does a better Hellboy than mike!! Yeah, I think when it comes to "guys" I definitely have been influenced by Platt. I've been a fan of Stephen's work from waaaaay back when, which is one of the main reasons I really felt fortunate that we got to do a book together. SoulSaga #5 is done penciling wise, but we're waiting on the final pages from the inkers

Thanks for all the crits! I don't think I'll be able to do much work in the near future, since I'm goig to get hammered with deadlines again argh.
