k. I finaly think this is working after a fashon.
I'm looking at different styles for a project I'm going to be doing. (graphic novel, maybe published yada yada )

I've thought about everything. watercolour, photoshop, coloured lineart etc.
this is Photoshop over a pencil sketch I did http://www.seraphseven.com/rinaldo/colesketch1.jpg of Cole Blaquesmith. A character out of Steampunk http://www.chrisbachalo.com/.
I did the original sketch to try and get a hang of drawing the char for a competition a while back, ( http://www.seraphseven.com/artcontest/main/ ) and just decided to use it for a test. I've tried this before but it wasn't working as well as it is now.
My final and not altogether fantastic entry can be seen here http://www.seraphseven.com/rinaldo/Colefin.jpg

doing it this way lets you not sit infront of a comp all day long (a good thing as far as I'm concerned ) but you get most of the good bits of working digital. pretty quick if you do it all sloppy like me=D
it's at the actuial size I painted it. I scaned it for web and couldn't be bothered rescaning and this was only going to be a little test.

but anyway. on with the show.

It's the same sort of thing Liquid did with the FF cover. I'm taking a lot of stuff from that sort of "painted manga style" a few tricks from the comic colouring technique. the rest from normal painting and a solid serving of photoshop monkey-business
I didn't flat it if any colouring people were wondering.

comments would be good ...please

looks very nice rinaldo. Love the coloring. I think your entry was nice too.
what's this compo about ? I can only see the graphic icons, when I go into the rules or whatever, I don't get to read anything. Anyway, did you won ?

Joachim: you have to click on the sections "pencils", "inks", and "colors". The contest goes through 3 stages. The first stage was pencil entries... from there 4 entries make it to the inking stage.. from there 3 entries go to the coloring stage. The final picture that shows the best of all 3 stages win. You can enter in any of the stages, but the penciling is already done.

Joachim- nah. I didn't win. there were a whole lot of really good artists who entered. much better at doing finished pencils than me.
The contest is about doing a comic pin up. the first stage is that pencilers do a pin up. it get's judged by some proffesionals. they choose 4 as winners and then they go on to be inked by inkers. the best inks are chosen by proffesionals as well and they go on to be coloured etc. http://artcontest.seraphseven.com/pencils/index.html
you can see the other pencil entries here. It's sort of a big collaboration thing. at the end they pick one overall winner I think inks haven't been finished yet so it's still in progress. I'll probably enter the colouring portion if I have a bit of time.

hope that makes sense I did my entry pretty quickly in a rush so I didn't put that much effort into it. not as much as I should have anyway. I just wanted to draw that character becase I'm a big Steampunk fan=)

thanks for your nice comments btw

I don't really like the crosseyes. How come you didn't correct those? I'd probably crop the picture down a little also. Just above the steam should be fine. The rest of the space throws off the balance too much. Looks like he might have been drinking too much with that gin blossom he is developing there. The glare looks too much like crosshairs. I think this would have looked better inked. There are things going on that shouldn't, but what do I know. I can't draw and paint like this. It is a nice start.

Great stuff Rinaldo! I agree that the pic should be cropped a little bit. Apart from that, a fine piece of work.

You're gonna post more of these, right?

Dean-LOL

Chapel-hehe. I probably should have removed the cross eyed thing. it looked kinda cool in the sketch but I have to agree it's a bit wierd here. I'd have to say, drawing speach bubbles on your sketches makes it lots more fun .

"I think this would have looked better inked" ??!?!?!?! gawd. didn't expect that. I can't disagree more. why? what would inks add to this.
I would add that the sketch is pretty much a muck about thing not meant to be overly serious.
And I love the crop........hmmm....crit denial it seems
I'll try it in less of a sketch format maybe.

Cos-thanks

Lukias-=D

ceenda-aww, gee ,two against one on the crop *big sigh* out-numbered and out-guned.

I'll be posting some more of these fer sure thanks

I'd be interested to know what other people think of the style seeing as it's something I'm going to use in one form or another for this project. would you rather see an extra hours painting on this or see it inked? same for a comic page. it would take quite a bit longer to ink it which could go into painting. I could also go over the top with some colour to make it look more "painted" I suppose.

just thougth I'd add this. another play around thing. the original drawing is done by Zid http://www.seraphseven.com/yazid/ cool artist, and all round super cool guy
He'll probably kill me for destroying his nice drawing like this but ehh...it was too good to resist.

this is the same thing as I did with cole

This is playing with killing some of the lines here and there.

not sure it works as well as it could. I'm going to try something else right now with my own drawing.

oh that girl is nice Rinaldo. Me likes
Don't think you should remove the outlines that much...maybe if you add a bit more shadows

Joachim-Yeah, it's interesting. I'm thinking maybe if you start to go down the painting road and loose the lines you have to go all the way, put in all the shadows make the edges work etc. looks a bit flat like this. hmmm...

I like the first girl better with the lines. The reason I said your sketch would look better inked is because your drawing style is too loose. The shapes are not defined enough to stand alone. People not familiar with the character probably don't realise that he only has 3 fingers at the bottom of that arm... or what exactly is going on with that arm. If your sketch work was tighter it would probably work better.

Chapel-I agree, but isn't that a bit obvious. I mean those bit's were right at the edge of the page. you couldn't ink it even if you wanted to becase it's not drawn in pencil in the first place. the problem is in the drawing, inks will only compound the probalem. making some of it up in the painting would better serve readability. inking just makes any mistakes stand out. I see the sketch as an underpainting. it needs more work done at the colouring stage to fully reach it's potential. I agree that the arm is a bit mish mash. (hehe, although It's drawn that way in the book most of the time ). but inking will not solve that as far as I can see. I need to learn to draw better. and I need to learn to paint better. but inking is not something I can see enhancing this sort of "style".
but anyway. I'll try to make my next thing tighter

Dino-thanks

Rinaldo -

Haven't seen you post in a while. I'm sure I missed a bunch of them. Either way, I think your stuff is looking great. Do more penciling, I'd love to see it!

The s7 had some stiff competition. I was REALLY impressed. You don't see that high of a caliber of art that often.

Yeah, Rin. I know for a fact I wiped the floor with your entry thanks to my rendition of the X-men.

What exactly IS a bandwagon anyway?
