I did this for Draw Club, but spent long enough on it that I wouldn't mind some feedback;

I usually use airbrush, but this time I decided to have a go at using Paintbrush. Once I got the hang of how it worked, I really liked it.

I'm generally quite happy with this although I don't think I quite nailed the look of the blue 'leaves' that I was after.

This is the sort of image I draw if I just draw, with no regard for making it look like anything nor using any reference. Good fun.

Row.

Looks awesome.

Only thing I could say as that the little green grassy bits in the backgound where it goes from dirt to grass. Looks a little un finished, and is rather an abrupt change from that to the complete out of focus background.

But then again I'm crap, so don't take any notice of me.
I'd like to see me try to make some thing half as good.

I really like how the little balls become its eyes and it takes on a living character, hes waving hello , im sure he is.

Little touches like the string wrapped around the stalk and the yellow to blue tints in the white leaf / petal are great.

I think theres something strange about the longer leafs on his right arm, were you going for a motion blur effect?

im not sure that portion of the pic has been properly realised, seems like you had some grand idea there that didnt come across as well on the pc as it did in your mind.

r.

That's really, really nice. The painting is so clean and crisp, if you know what I mean.

Can we have a bigger version, please?

Hey Rowan! nice to see you post again!

That image really kicks ass I find. Very lovely choice of colors and all.

Crits go as follows (even though I find it's awesome).

The stem of the plant from the ground up seems improperly lit, as it's not uniform enough, not enough bouce light and too much sharp directional on the right.

In general, since I love lighting and try my best to do good at it, I can just see some slight lighting issues... and there's some contradictory bounce light in there, like the orange core and trunc has a cyan shadow, etc, but of course, that could be considered artistically correct... and... aw fuck, I'm just being anal as usual... I shouldn't crit. =/

It's a great pic suma, it's disgusting in a beautiful way. =)

Well, I have no crits.

To the guy that talked about motion blur: =P

It's obvious that there are multiple partially-transparent blue leaves.

The leaves and the bud for the new leaf are almost like enalya's style of translucent shimmeryness. cool shiznat.

the shading and detail is really good, even if it isn't completely coherent.

Thank's everyone for the comments! It's very cool to see that this one was so positively recieved.

To address a few comments;

. The background - yes, it was a quick replacement for what I originally intended to do. I was hoping to fill out the environment thick with other "plants" (is it a plant? who knows) and really make it look like it was part of an eco-system. But I ran out of time, and a good old soft-focus background seems like the best bet.

. Rors idea that the balls are some sort of eyeball, or seeing device - I like!

. The blue "leaves" - there were originally a lot more of these hanging over the other way too, like a sort of canopy, but I was having enough difficulty making them look how I wanted that I deleted some of them.

I wanted to make them look very translucent, and I made the further one (which looking at it now is drawn at the wrong angle) more transparent so it looked further away.

. Frost's comment on the stem - it was originally painted a lot darker than you see here, but I did a brightness/contrast filter at the end and quite liked being able to see more of the details in the shadows, so I left it like that. I don't know if the stem looks wrong or not, but I actually quite like how it looks.

. The odd colors in the shadows (wrong bounce light?) - ahh! Those aren't actually bounce lighting, I was trying to paint in the suggestion of 'irredecence'. So areas that aren't filled in directly by sunlight show up their irredecent colors much stronger.

--

One thing that I was trying to fix at the end was the flat, side-on nature of the design. Taking out the other leaves meant I'd lost a big part of what gave it depth, so I tried to fix that with the little balls and the middle things that come over the body.

I don't think I was totally successful in filling it out, it still looks a little flat.

--

Thanks again everyone.

Row.

This looks really good, I love the way the light and shadows fall across the form. Nice colors too.

And I like the out of focus background
