Thanks, Spooge! I liked the first image. I was interested in the way you "draw" in Photoshop. Extremely educational. I loved the tank. Answered tons of questions, not about how you work, but about painting in general.
These are a great gift to us painting hobbyists and learners. BTW, do you work from the middle when it comes to colors too?
I look forward to immediately saving many more of these. Again, thanks. To quote Titanic, "I will never forget YOUUUUUUUUU!" |

Haha, I see I must explain myself:
Hey, artists are supposed to bring their own interpretation to what they see right? ^_^

wow, wow, wow.
i love how you work from the mid tones out. im totally opposite, and i think it hurts me.
im kinda sad that the color would lag it too much, cause i would love to see how you incorparate color. it's one of my hard points.
i think a program like this would be even more useful for the "students" of this forum also. having a capped script that the "masters" could look at and give critiques on the process in addition to the end result would be invaluable. i know it would be for me. i think it would help the crits to be more specific and understandable.
if anybody gets leads to a pc version of this program, let us know

Pardon me while I pick up the shattered pieces of my ego...
I hear they can reattach it if you can find it and get it in an ice cooler fast enough.
The utility is Snapz, for mac.
Nex, yes, you see the problem with gamma. argh
Cuddly, yes, I guess it's fine for what it is. The 1 sec freeze did hurt facility.
Anthony, boy, at least someone sees the ballerina.

photoshop should have a "scripting" plugin that records every brushstroke you make, and saves all that data to a (big) file.
then other people can let the script unfold and see how you paint something.
scripting would also be handing for doing effects quickly (homemade filters) |

Craig - never seizes to amaze me how you "chisel" something out of "nothing". Sort of makes me think of the old italian sculptors that used to say that they could "see" the image in the marble and just had to "free" it.
Also gives a glimpse of seeing through your eyes - what a pleasure! Thanks.

PS: Are you still working on "Car Whores", and will you be able to post anything regarding it?

Spooge, it's weird. I was sitting really close to the screen and had experienced a moment of indecision decyphering your image. 3 seconds into the process it looked like gorge or canyon to me. Curiously enough, my friend sitting 4 feet behind me turned around and called it immediately. "Nice face..." he said. I guess it's one of those "Can't see the forest for the trees" kinda things. I stood back a bit and it all came into focus. Thanks for the unique look into your process!

You could use a program like Adobe Premeire, or even Newtek's Vidget to convert the numbered image files into an animation file.

I don't know how well it would work with photoshop, but you might try using lotus screencam:
http://www.lotus.com/home.nsf/welcome/screencam
instead of recording video, it records the mouse and keyboard actions inside windows, as well as your voice. I've seen it used with 3d studio max and it's incredibly cool; it's just like the person is sitting next to you using the computer (playback is full screen). |

Glad you liked it, I don't think I will be doing anymore. It's like talking while having your grammar examined.
Liquid, I am doing mattes for FF. I hope to work conceptually on their next feature (which will happen unless this one TANKS hard). That will be fun.
I will post them after the movie comes out.
AliasMoze, Working from middle out is generally correct, but "general" to "specific" is more correct. Think of it this way, I am trying to reverse the process of a very large blur. What is a painting that is blurred like this? A block in! Art Geek riddle.
So the idea is to get the big areas to what they will be in the end as soon as possible. This means you can start with relationships right away. This applies with color, too.

Second anim = very cool. It's like a "guess whats going to happen next" game.
Spooge; I notice that most of your "fun sketches" have -very- low contrast - is that a concious thing?
Row.

Hope to see the matte's you did once the movie hits! I'm also hoping you get to do the concepts - that would be very cool!
The movies are awesome! It is really interesting to watch it come alive, its like watching someone think. Sort of like putting thought patterns on canvas... I know sounds kinda out there...
The only thing that seems to worry me is that some will think that this is the only way of doing things, and thus never try to explore and experiment themselves.
Either way, I tremendously enjoy these!
Ignore me.

Wow, those movies were great.. me a long (well long-ish) time lurker is forced to comment.
Shame is Spooge makes it all look so easy.. Its like sitting down in front of a great Skateboard/BMX video and saying to yourself.. wow that isnt that hard.. I can do that.. then proceding to ollie down a 10 ft flight of stairs with wild 'I am invincible' abandon, and then breaking your leg and ending up a mess..
which coincidentaly is what my first 'using the Methods of Spooge' painting that I attempted after watching these movies ended up as.. one big grey mess...
Oh well I can always dream.... and practice of course.. |

For my whole life I've been trying to use tutorials to teach me somethig, but by the time I were finding them, I either new the subject or it was totally usless. I new a lot of people that I talked with on subject of painting. But, I never ever expeienced something like that in my life. Spooge, or now Prof. Mullins, I can say that from this time , you're the best teacher I ever had. Thank you very much.

thx for sharing those movies with us spooge. The first one is a very clean way to work, the other one I looked at more as a experimental way of working, but still I feel that the second one gave me the most, to see how well and carefully you set the values. It's no doubt that this is one of your huge strengths.
btw, don't this kinda go the other way than hiding your secrects ? ...no forget I said that, keep it coming ...I don't think anyone will be able to take your job away from you anyway, and infact I think it's ok that you share it, even though you might meet more competition, it's also a good way to push yourself further, and become even more versatile (don't you think that's the fun part of this profession ?)
