Don't know how finished this is.
I read about a screen cap utility that can capture quicktimes, so I thought I would try it out, and this is what popped up. Not the most advanced painting, but it does give an idea.
So if you are really having trouble about how to start a painting from scratch and what to do in what steps, this is ONE way. It could have been done many other ways. If you know how to paint already, don't bother downloading it, it's not much.
I am interested to see if it works. I can see the movie on mac and NT.
It is captured at 1 frame/sec. Quite a pain, having the cursor freeze every second
Here's the image:
and the "film" (300k quicktime)

My thought is - it a face. or..
Well. I know you're spooge, but I just don't get what that is.
BTW, you draw something better , and capture it - then sell it for good money on this forum

I too had a bit of problems seeing what it was, at first. But, the steps shows a very nice and clan way to work, so the message came out sucessfully anyway

heh.. I figured it out right away, because the eye is the center of focus. Pretty neat watching you work spooge. I feel a little stupid.. I never bothered putting a check in opacity on the paintbrush tool before till yesterday. Like a whole new world when I use photoshop now. |

It's Spooge's vampire pic!!
Just out of curiousity - did the cursor freezing up on you every second radically affect your painting? Did you have something else in mind when you started or did it turn out pretty much the way you wanted? |

I would love to be able to do those movies,... and watch myself paint to actually see where I go wrong during my painting phase... of course, I could also post the results. Hm, maybe one of my programmer friends could whip something up by grabbing the pshop frame on a timely interval... hmm |

This would be *great* on a more complex image. Actually, even this little thing it interesting to watch - you have a strange way of drawing the face!

Great idea! I bet you that the reason the cursor freezes up is that it takes a couple of seconds to save the image to disk. However, if you could whip up an utility that could just copy the contents to a buffer, and then maybe write the buffer periodically to disk? The thing is that the grabs have to be at about 1 second or less I think, or else I think it would be a bit choppy...
What do I know? Nothing I tell you.

I see a ballerina without legs myself...no faces for me. :] I don't know why it should pause like that-my computer doesn't freeze up when I'm capturing video from VHS.

PS: Ironically, after I posted this and it directed me back to the thread, I saw the face immediately.

This makes me realize some inefficiencies like not taking full advantage of the larger brushes & opacity settings.
Very helpful, and doesn't give out too much so we all have to go our own way.

Someone should put music to that where the beat matches the jerks of the captures. ^^

Here's another, careful, it's 1.9 mb
hopefully you can tell what it is
It took 1017 seconds, hehe.
I had no idea what I was gonna paint, as you can see. There are a few mistakes and dead ends as well. Gripping Drama to watch. See Spooge sweat, see him screw up, see him not fix it.

First i just wanna say thankyou, I can only imagine how frustrating making this picture must have been for you, to paint all jerky like that. Ive used 3d programs that let u paint on meshes, and some have been that slow.. and it is totally annoying. Although i think some of the comments were very rude, it just goes to show how candid at times this forum can be even to one of the members it owes so much to. I dunno if you have seen Seeg Millers watch me paint movies captured from painter, they are less tedious on ur computer because they dont capture a image, it just saves each action to a file. I dunno what ur preference is on painter, or if you even have it. But if you are interested id be happy to walk you through the process of setting it up to saving it as a movie, if necessary.
I like the way you paint, its very diffrent from my own way, and not what i expected either. |

Seems this one works better.
Liquid, I am not working on cars at the moment, my previous commitment to Final Fantasy made it impossible. After FF wraps, I may do something, but I am not counting on it.
This image is about 500 by 300, really small. The lag makes anything larger (also more finished) really hard. Same thing with the color
Gecko, yes take full advantage of everything that you can. This way of working is something I have been working on only since hanging out here, there are so many ways to work. The glue that holds it all together is the way you think about form and value. That carries through regardless of technique or medium.
A. Mount, ???
Suferboi, glad you like it! There is that one painter script of that bridge, but I really can't stand painter. Painting is hard enough without wrestling with that interface. I am interested, what did you expect as far as how I paint?
Trance-R, I do think they make a PC version, but I bet someone does. |

Holy smoke! I didn't realize you were also working on Final Fantasy! Are you doing matt paintings, conceptual paintings/designs? Are you able to say? Better yet, do you expect to be able to show them somewhere along the line?
I know I sound geeky, just excited is all.

Gripping drama, not. Fun to watch you carve out a picture? yep... loads of fun. Well, for me at least.
Wife: what are you watching?
Me:... a picture being drawn by Spooge...
Wife: It's all black and white...
Me: ... um yeah?
Wife: ...That's it? a tank? You're watching him draw a tank...with little soldiers?
Me: ...kinda fun dontcha think?
Wife gives odd look and walks away.
I guess I must admit I'm finally, completely, a digital geek.
Thanks, Spooge.

Thanks Craig for the tow paintings and the two movies. This is not only beautiful but also extremely useful, inspiring and make you think about your technique. I really enjoyed that.
Thanks again.

Spooge Demon: Well i always imagined you doing at least a rough line sketch first, then laying out your tones of shading then going from there to build up your image.. With the head drawing it looks like you sketched of how the light would be drawn.. personally i have to draw the head first. I just think its amazing how the shape you drew before you started shading in is pretty much where the light and shadow would hit on a face.
For the tank you also do it diffrently from me but closer to what i expected.. What i mean is that you drew your background first something i never do unless the backgound is key to the image.. This time with the tank you did a siloutte..
i dunno i guess most of it was i didnt know what to expect on your approach to how you paint.
btw i think ive made it blatantly obvious how inexperinced i am. |
