Ok, started feeling embarassed about the first version. Here's a tighter version for now. At least until I get the "morning-after test" [tm &(c) Frost]...

Again, I know it doesn't look like a vampire in the traditional sense... read the previous thread for the explanation on that silly logic of mine.

being productive; nicy

hm some crits on the lightning
(I know that you have much more lightning skills than me so consider this more like a question and not as a crit )

I'm a bit confused about the core shadow of his head-->the light seems to come from above but the shadow on his left shoulder seems to be as dark;

the highlight on his right breast is very near the core shadow but don't influence the core shadow---> radial lightning?

The colours are odd then again this vampire isn't traditional

I agree with Jenn looks like a Beast / devil of some kind

Still looks c00l tho

Cool...has that "i know something that you don't" sinister look.

Reminds me of Thief 2, though. most be the grey/red combination.

I liked the first version but I think that this works better. The firey background goes well with the grey skin tones, it seems to work in an opposite way as the colourful part of the pic makes my eyes want looks at the darker area. I know the pic isn't that big but that's how it works for me, hope that makes sense.

This one almost slipped off the page. He is looking more and more like a gargoyle if you ask me. Cool none of the less. I like the fire pits of hell there in the background.

This is awesome, I love everything about it. Only one thing sorta bugs me... his little stubby horns. Those look like sissy horns to me, it almost makes him comical, hehehe...

But at the same time I like those horns, because lots of folks would have given him large horns, which sets yours out from the rest

Nice stuff Liquid! Your comic influence truly shows. =)

Would you consider having the ambiant red lighting affect the guy therefore getting rid of some of that black?

I really like the volume you've acheived in his face and all, very nice lighting!

JENN/v1510/Chapel Thanks! I know he doesn't look much like a vampire. I just keep thinking that vampires would have to be connected to "hell" in some way. Sort of satan's answer to angels. So why not have them look more demonic.

SILBER Thanks for bringing up the lighting. There's some logic behind it, however, oftentimes I think it's more important to have something work graphically rather than strictly according to the rules of reality. I once asked one of my favorite artists, why he had rendered something in the particular way he had done it. Obviously, the lighting didn't work the way he had drawn it, and I wasn't sure how to render it in color. The response I got was, "I don't know. I don't really think about it when I drew it. I just draw things that look cool." His answer truly surprised me, since this is one of the most talented artists I know. But it also provided some food for thought.

So, while I'm not advocating to throw out all the rules I always try to think of what might make it look interesting. Nevertheless, there was an "idea" behind the lighting:

The "rafters" are more of a compositional element than anything else. Something to hopefully create shapes of interest for the eye. Plus, it saved me from drawing the entire figure Hope that makes more sense now.

TOVART I wanted him to look a bit more intelligent I havent seen Thief 2 though.

JEZ Don't judge a man by the size of his "horns"

FROST I think you're absolutely right. A slight maroon/red creeping up on him from the bottom left would be perfect and add more depth to it. I'm just way too lazy now to do anything about it. I'm all "vampired" out. Gotta be productive on something else again.

Again, thanks for all the nice comments, hope the next stuff is a bit better

I know what you mean
over here we call it ''knstlerische freiheit'' = artist / freedom

that means that an artist may do what he like (in his pics) if he thinks that it's ''right'' or good for the picture

to know the rules is neccesary
to know but to bend and break them is better
if done in a good way

you usually try to draw your pics ''correctly'' especially in lightning therefore I asked

Wow! This is great.
The forehead bugs me a bit. i don't know if you did it intentionally, but i think the shadow there could be brighter.
It's nice to see some paintings from you.
I hope we'll see more of it

Micke -

Thanks! I hope time permitting I get to do a bunch more. I just doodled a quick Hellboy for my sketchbook, that I think turned out pretty cool - but I'm going to try to make it a bit more finished than what I've been posting.

I was trying to go for shapes similar to the Batman mask in the movie. However, I'm not sure it worked out quite that way - feel free to paint over and show me what you were thinking!

Ohh.. this ones nice, i really like the whole organic rounds and shapes going on, dang you have the planes of the face and body down pat

I think it gives off the impression of being a gargoyle because the rafters behind him are sort of wing looking, and the hunched over pose sort of makes it look like hes about to jump

ill have to get my version of a vampire done tomorrow. im more for the thin sickly looking vampire type

great picture. Much better than the last. I like the contrast between him and the background. Kinda looks like he dosn't have a neck. Like his head is attached directly to the torso. But that might be just me. Overall it great.

Chris if you read this I hope you don't mind I posted this on eventcomics.com's message board. Your FFX pic showed up over there and they started digging up some of your old pics from your website. I posted this, because I think people take for granted how really talented you are. (no I'm not trying to kiss ass)

Well, in case of this pic I'm not so sure about that. I think I may be drawing the shorter straw on this one...
