um. lemme see...i'm new to this digital art stuff and i just got my wacom tablet a few days ago. i personally think this picture needs more detail. i think i've over-used the smudge tool a bit too. oh yeah, that dodge/burn shading technique from this site ain't workin for me either. i'd appreciate some other comments plz.

looks good, add more texture and a dynamic pose next time. looks like you already got the hand of it. and dodge and burn is a little passe now, or not used as much anyway, i dont think

You got the idea of shading...
Like CapnPyro said.
The pose is not dynamic enough. There needs to be some more movement, and spring in the limbs of the char, and maybe a bend in the back. That sword arm is too short btw. Where is the 4th finger?
Overall you need to work on some composition. arrange your image so that it conveys the character and his actions, in a way that is communicative and dynamic.
Good start though. As for shading with the Dodge and burn technique I'd say that most people simply airbrush the correct shading and then in the final stages maybe they use the dodge and burn to make extremely shiny highlights, or colour varied 'burnt' shadows.
Personally I use the dodge and burn at the end for a bit more shading.

One thing you might want to experiment with is using more than one color in your shading. Right now each portion of your image is pretty much one color. Play around with added various hues in and you might like the outcome
(for example, a little bit of blue on the metal of the armour?)
[edit: Also, the arm over his head looks a little short. ]
