Really nice mood, Enayla Although I think I speak on behalf of most people here: it'd be nice to hear your step-by-step process. A lot of ppl do things differently and are always open to new techniques. You capture a really smooth look well... what's your secret?

I just had to register to comment on this. Its so beautiful, so graceful. Like early night time after a battle when all is still and calm.
Alright, here is the low down of it though. The sky is awsome, not sure why, maybe it is the swirling clouds that makes the dragon and the lady the focal point. The dragon is nice, but a few things need to be improved. His eyes aren't too noticable. I would think a darker or more of a glow would improve the effect a little. His front right leg doesn't look right for some reason. What are all those dots on the end of his tail? Looks like a runway ramp... The girl is beautiful, esp. her hair. Her right arm looks kinda lumpy though. And also on her right arm, on the bottom of it where the background changes from the land/hair to her side/armpit there is a bit of an indent. Looks like a sliver of her arm is going behind her back while the rest is going in front.
Oh well, either way its a very nice peice of art. Nearly flawless.

Wow! Hey, Enayla does dragons! that's great! I love dragons. I think it's wonderful, especially for a first try. I'm sure you'd get better at them if you drew them more.
Everything looks awsome! amazing work

hydrid: Thanks I wish I /did/ have the fun to sit down and do something like that, but I honestly don't. I've done a hair tutorial already, and it's floating around somewhere in the old forum... The smooth look is my style. It's how I've always drawn. It involves sketching in colours rather than with lines, and using the smudge tool in a constructive way.
StarFighter: Thank you for your very useful crits Maybe one of these days I'll sit down and remake the picture, but I've grown sick and tired of it now. I /did/ fix some stuff with it the other day but I'm not sure if it's an improvement or not:

Well.. what the heck. I'll post too. First, this is a nice painting.
There are quite a few things that you might want to keep in mind in your next ones.
The major thing hurting this work is the dragon is chopped off. I think the way in it is done really hurts the composition.
Also, the composition is designed so that you look through the girl and into the dragon. The bad thing with this composition is the girl is way more interesting then the dragon. It would look better if the dragon was at 3/4 view or looking more at you.
The next related to all of this is you have built the picture on basically 2 flat planes. I'd try extending the dragon into the front plane -- either the head or the tail to bring out the perspective a bit more.
The way it is now is rather flat.
Finally, on your lighting its like you have tons of bounce light going around which doesnt really help the form of the composition (I see this more in comic work). But to use bounce light in this way you must REALLY know what you are doing. The way it is now distracts the eye from reading the picture.
In summary to improve this painting I would do the following: Move the dragon to a 3/4 view, bring the head and tail moer into the front plane, simplify the lighting, and wrap the tail around the girl (this would help with the composition). The simplier lighting would allow you to bring out more anatomy into the girl as well.

I really like the girl and the background, the dragon, well its good for a 1st one.
It would be great if you do a tutorial about how you draw your humanoid like characters.(those really amaze me.)

awetopsy: the thing about the breasts in this piece is that, unlike most 'guys' who either a) don't understand actual anatomy or b) draw completely from their groin area, these breasts are drawn ANATOMICALLY CORRECTLY.
it's a damn nice change. i wish more people would pay attention to anatomy. good job, enayla. |
