Well, I was sort of feeling like just screwing around a bit, and started to do a little sketch for Francis thread featuring the alley way and I came up with this...

That turned into this.

Funny thing is that it started to turn into this drawing... you can still see the background a bit. Just goes to show how the mind wanders. I was thinking about a drawing I've been doing of EVE, the bjork video of "Full of love", and the recent robo threads...

Nothing spectacular, but it was fun to do.

Liquid! your a real good artist. I'd imagine coloring all that linework of artists must sometimes really inspire to draw a few times yourself..

I really like the lights they set a real dark mood as weirds as that sounds.. But it sets a real good contrast.

The bridge uptop looks a bit out of perspective though, but nothing big..

I really like this, A lot of artists use their linework to give the image a 3d look, but you use color and form more to to do the same thing. It kinda looks more realistic that way imo. Since there are no real lines in life because our eyes just see edges. I think, im not sure if that make sense.. heh

Did you ever paint tradtionally with oils or acrylics and stuff? If so, do you still do sometimes in your free time?

I like both of them Chris. The light trail in the alley is a cool idea. The robohead looks great, but it looks like there is a little green reflective lighting on the face and not on anything else.

Sp0ok3y: That is a no no. Liquid!'s style is something they have developed over years of coloring. The best way to color is to learn everything on your own and not to mimic.

Hey very cool to see you putting some of your own stuff up here! Im not sure where the idea to but a cyborg head on top of your alleyway came from but it looks pretty cool, for some reason i expect it to be sitting on an 8 legged spider looking body

BUBONIC Thanks! These are done just as some quickie sketches. Also all the recent sketches were done without any underdrawing/light_sketching before hand. I just went in and started slapping the colors down. While that's a fun way to work, its probably also the explanation, why the stuff looks a bit screwy. I'm hoping to put up more of some really finished work up soon, but doing coloring all day long sorta leaves you burnt to do more drawing/painting at the end of the day. I tend to want to do anything that is NON-comic/art related.

I've done some traditional painting, however I don't have a background in art, so usually most of that time is spent trying to figure out how to use the different media rather than doing any thing productive in itself

And yes, the bridge is a bit wacky - you're right!

Spooky Thanks for the kind words! I've mentioned this in previous threads, so I won't go into it anymore, but I would suggest you try to find your own way of doing things rather than trying to copy someone else. Like Chapel said. But that's just my opinion.

As far as palettes go I would gladly share them, but the truth is that I mix all my colors from scratch. Why? Because I hope it forces me to think about what I'm doing, rather than just picking colors off a palette. Is it a bit time consuming. Yes. But for my own sake I really feel like its helpful. Just my way of doing things.

CHAPEL you're right. No reason for the green except I felt like putting it there. But I can't defend it!

er wait. There's a green secondary ambient fluorescence given off by microbes just outside the frame Yeah that's the ticket! [Use Jon Lovitzes voice from SNL yes. This is my feeble attempt at light hearted humor.]

CAP I don't know either. You're right its pretty weird. I have been trying to finish up the layout for a E.V.E pic, so when its done I'll post it, and that one should be a lot more finished than this sketchy style.

LIQUID METAL- Liquid is a very small company. So there are more people than just me, however anything I ever post here is just stuff I've done. Either in coloring or drawing.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to check it out and the nice comments. As always very much appreciated. Hope to post some REALLY finished stuff soon, and then you can tear me a new one!

My only gripe is that I would think some of that cool green light would hit the cables on the left. Coloring is starting to warp my mind. Look at all the pretty colors.

Francis keep it clean, (That was my attempt at lite humor.)

LIQUID METAL - I don't do anything special. Rinaldo described the process a while back - use the "search" button!

Thanks!

Thanks Francis! Though, I can't seem to be able to put them down more "gouachy" or make those cool "pseudo tech" strokes you and spooge do. Obviously a lack of understanding basic technique/shapes on my part... maybe you can point me in the right direction one of these days.

Chris: Big big canvas... little bitty brush. Do you use the paintbrush tool or the airbrush when you are doing these? I believe Francis and spooge use the paintbrush tool the most. Micke uses a big paintbrush tool so he can go from small to big using pressure. (I'm probably telling you something you already know)

These pics are all done using the paintbrush exclusively. I really think its a lack of knowledge... I think the reason Craig is able to do such dead on values using 'gouache' is a true understanding of forms and planes... Something I'm obviously lacking!

You ever think of saving your steps when making one these cool quickies then just post em? I am really curious to see how you go about using form more than lines to get a 3d look.. Just a though though, whenever you have the time..
