A quickie based on an older quickie. Influenced by spooge, but probably not endangering his client base too much.

spooge - ehhe... nice to see that you still got your sense of humor intact.
Francis - that looks pretty awesome.. One thing; Don't you think that large lit wall on the right takes too much of the attention away from the centre? I don't know if you planned to add a character or something there, but....yeah..whatever.. Just thinking out loud.

I agree with Boomstick. I think use could use something on that side of the piece. Also, I think true up the edges of the buildings would give it a more crisp and finished look(if that is what you are going for). Besides that, very cool! |

Looking very nice Francis! The only thing maybe I spot that may be wrong is the large value difference between the black tones of the alley and the dark tones of the industrial part in led by it, they almost seem to have 2 different local ambiants, perhaps homogenizing it a little more, ... I don't know, I'm just french. =) |

Great image. Is it just me, but are the buildings curving towards center as they gain height? |

The middle layer of structures has much less contrast than the ground it's next to. So maybe darken that up a bit. Ot's not dark, and it's not misty or anything, so even if that light were on it wouldn't be casting a volumetric aura. Just a though. Looks good!

Nice quicky piece. I like the detailing on the left building and the light, but I think that possibly some coloured lighting might have made the picture have more atmosphere to it. It feels too baron unless that's what you were going for. |

Nice stuff, Francis. The alley feels really dark and the wall at the other end really looks like it's out in the open. Cool details going on all over. My only critique is more of a technique thing and that would be to use some bigger brushes, particularly along that right wall in the alley. All those straight lines aren't working for me, breaking them up with some random strokes or just plain bigger strokes would help keep it away from looking like it was colored with marker (unless that's what you wanted, don't think it is by the rest of the piece though).
Keep it goin' though. I think you're paintings are coming along with each new one you do.

Hey thanks for all the great comments - it is so helpful to get all these observations, really makes you see all the things you miss when working on it. I may try to work on this a little more and incorporate some of the crits - thanks again.
As a matter of fact, there was a figure in the original sketch, but since it blew so hard I took it out. Here it is in all its blowhardiness. Boy it looks so much better without the archer...

I like it more with the archer.
Without it there is to much empty space. |

This would be a cool style to do storyboards in. Y'know, I like the archer, but I don't know if I necessarily like him in the picture. The way you have him in there is kinda' neat, though, because the focus is still in the center of the alley. I'm expecting something to come barreling through there. Cool stuff.

You seem to be going in a good direction, and I've enjoyed your effort to paint some more realistic people in some of the prev posts.
Not sure if this will help you at all, but I painted in and out some things that bothered my eye, take it for what it's worth:
1. the archer seems slapped on, the backlight on him is so bright, yet it doesn't seem to affect the dark wall behind him. The light fallout should be really dim by the time it reaches him.
2. The lighting coming from the front/right side: I'd imagine the light would also hit to the wall on the left side of the pic.
3. The bright lamp on the wall illuminates the wall in a really limited way, the fallout is unnaturally short.
4. in the background with all the mechanical stuff (which look great), the contrast is already very small, but even farther away, the sky scraper seems to have stronger contrast when you'd imagine it would almost completely melt away.
Overally I think the solidness of the metal walls suffers from the hasty brush work. Just a transparent brushing over it would help a lot, IMO.
Don't laugh at the overpaint too hard, I think it shows some of the things I meant. It's a little darker on the darkest parts than I intended.

(Hope this works)
I really like what you've got going Francis. Once I saw the archer come into the picture it gave me some quick ideas. Rather than do a paintover I did a quick 3 value composition to show one idea that occurred to me. Hope that's o.k.
I flipped the archer to aim down the corridor, made him the darkest, to bring him forward. You could bring him even more forward - crop to show maybe just the wrist and hand and the arrow tip; possibly even more dramatic. I added what's supposed to be a shadow of someone or something approaching - this could just as easily be some kind of a huge creature whose shadow runs up the wall too; maybe even a claw coming into view at the end of the corridor. But it gives the archer something to aim at and becomes the real focus of the picture - and creates tension and something of a story. The number 1 indicates the vanishing point - typically where you might put your focal point close to, since that is where the eye naturally goes, (thus the shadow shape). Number 2 is the light which you might want to dim; or figure out a way to make it less important (in this scheme).
The general value arrangement is set up dark, mid-tone, light as you go to the distance - these are value ranges; not flat color. You've basically got that going already.
Just another idea to try.
