I'm having fun just thinking that this is a warm-colored winter scene. That just makes me smile

i like the sort of dreary atmosphere, the red and greens and yellows you worked also look really nice

it reminds me of one of those impressionistic paintings we study in art class, the ones where right after the artist did them they got commited to the insane asylumn or went nuts

i mean, i like it!

Hey, first moment I saw it, I thought of Richard Schmid, but it's only because he does a lot of similar color schemss with his outdoor stuff. I really like the subtlety of this piece.

Yeah, I totally feel your pain. When ever I start to do big washes in broad strokes in both painter or photoshop, the lag time it takes to compute is just ridiculous(even on a PIII 933, 512mb RAM, and a 64mb GeForce 2 Ultra). That whole fluid, artistic movements of your wrist and arm is just gone. It's really those moments of frustration in particular that I want to just say "fuck it" to digital art and go back to my canvas and brushes. I mean, digital stuff is great for commercial work when editing and variation is crucial to a project, but for the pure joy of painting, digital is still far behind the fulfillment you get out of traditional stuff.

Craig: Don't get me wrong, I said 'I think' it's bad, which means it's bad FOR ME. So for me this subject is bad because it's not telling me anything, I don't really have any emotion looking at it. I like art that telles a story or provokes an emotion (any kind). This is why I don't like Impressionists and I don't like this painting. For me it's bad. That doesn't mean it's bad for everyone I usually like (or love) what you do. I didn't llike this one and I wanted to tell it, especially when everybody seems to think it was really good. I was just honest in expressing my taste.

Nex: So because I don't think like you I'm a giant asshole? That's really funny. Please tell me what to think.

One comment on the brush lag...

my solution is to always work the block in at a small resolution (200x300 or 300x400) to get started...I get no brush lag and when I get my painting blocked in I increase it to a larger size. As I work up the detail in phases I just bump up the resolution as I go. I dont have the problem with the lagging brushes unless I have to put down a watercolor wash on a 200 meg file after its been scaled up in res.

I work gesturally in the beginning and brush response is important to my flow during that phase of my painting. Scaling the resolution up as I go eliminates this issue for the most part.
