First of all, I'm sorry if I'm flooding this place with too many threads, but these paintings just keep coming out and who am I to control my own creativity? No one. :]
Well on to the pic, it's another bird, reminds me a bit of a certain Finnish brother trio that used to paint a lot of birds about a hundred years ago.
I wish they hadn't used stuffed animals in the making of some of their pics though, lol.
A progress step: http://members.surfeu.fi/pveik/turhatjpgt/birdonbranchstep.jpg
Gotta be most thankful to frost and his fine comments about my values in the earlier pics.

Nice work. I love the lose strokes. The lighting is working well.

Hey Gecko
As I said on ICQ, that's a nice pic and I really like how you're dealing with values in your few latest pics... if I helped, then, I am very glad... too bad I can't get these kind of results myself... :/
Very nice work... perhaps some more refined backgrounds in some upcoming work? |

Nice job there, guy..
I like it a lot; the colors, the lighting, the bird paint a great peaceful mood. That eye is just adorable too I think my favorite part would be the feet, though. Don't ask me why.
Something i noticed.. remember a while back there was this thread about how the subject matter of too many pics posted here were based on wizards, warriors, babes or mechs more or less? I don't know if it's just me, but I'm seeing a terrific variety of work these days. Keep it coming!

Goddamnit Gecko, stop painting, your over-creativity madness isnt helping me with my creative block
But yea, nicenice!
I dunno, I sure could use some varm tones on the background, and as Frost said,a bit more detailed.

this is a great one, too! it's nice that you are going over with the same subjects. one can definitely see the improvement that has happened... hmm, actually this and the pelican have something that the earlier pics doesn't have. must be those spot on values...? what is it that has happened to you that has made you able to pick values as good as those?

The bird subject might be rare on the forum, but I've done quite a few of them lately so that's why I so eagerly contributed to the gasmask and mech threads, to try other areas as well. I agree about the variety, lately we've gotten to see many more "beautiful" subjects here, it's all the better.
Some new users have brought in totally different styles (sear, enayla, jezebel) and some have really changed from their usual stuff (spooge, francis).
Personally I'm going to try out very different things, I haven't been painting for long so I lack a lot in many areas. Wacom was a really great investment as it has introduced me to the world of colors, a year ago I only liked doing pencil stuff.
Hmm, my dad's only comment was about how the bird looked like this Finnish species (kuukkeli), but with most of the feathers ripped off of it. Ugh, well, someday I'll make a painting that'll actually look like an existing species of bird and convinces even him :Q.
He might look like a cute little fellow, but eats like a pack of angst-driven ferrets!
janne: yeah it's about the values, and those still life oil paintings have their positive effect on it as well as on the color use! Gonna have to paint yet another one after I get rid of the last 2 exams.
tweeder: hehe, as if not sad enough already, the bird is soon gonna wish that evil branch didn't exist. Luckily we don't get to see what happens.
Background... I'm gonna be experimenting with more blurred out bg effects for a while, on many earlier pics I liked to polish everything that is seen on the pic, but that just doesn't appeal to me right now. Not that I'm going to stay only on one or the other.
