Weird no one is quite catching it. Put the pencils and colors next to each other. Compare length of legs, mid-torso, forearm length... The face did have some work too.
Chapel - First off - "Mr."? Thanks, but no need. "Chris" is fine...
I see what you did, you should carefully consider using absolute blacks. The only true place I used it was on the eyes... Again, very conscious decision. I'm not arguing that it's right or wrong, ultimately most things are taste. However, just wanted to make sure that I let you know that these were things I considered when I work on pieces. I may still tweak it tho if it looks weird in print.

I actually didn't use any black. I just multiplied the same color over itself. It is a little dark, but I wanted you to be able to see it. I just think the forms are blending together too much. Like I said I'm still learning metals, but I'm a stickler since I've been staring at a brass trumpet most my life. There is alot of shapes and colors that go within the reflections but you can still make out the forms. Eh.. I might just be too picky. |

Wow, this is like...awesome. The shininess, oh the shininess. Liquid!, you guys own the EVE Protomecha idea? Anyways, this is just too kick-ass, although it gets confusing around her breast area. But that always seems to happen ;D |

Really good!
I like that alot, Chris. I don't remember seening this anywhere. When you say original, do you mean it was printed or just original that was never shown?
The cuts are very soft. I like that alot.
There is something about the face I don't like though. I can't figure it out exactly... Maybe the eyelid. It's very bright. I think it's a little too dominating. And the shading from the pencils to the colors is differant. And the curve of the mouth is differant too. I think I perfer the penciled positioning.
Those lips are just bueatiful.
"Sins of the Daughter", thats just funny.
Any bonuses in the TPB? Sketches, pinups, etc?
Chapel, I agree with the metallic thing. But since the metal is usually reflective, it generally is more light with a few small areas of extreme dark. Shiny plastic is usually the same way.

It would be cool to see some of your own stuff up. Do you have any penciled stuff? That would be cool.
Well maybe Ill catchya later.

I think the black on black nature of the original pic, makes it hard to see the edges, and therefore tell the changes. Not to mention scrolling up and down on the browser between the two.
But with Capn's post, you can see more.

Hey Liquid!, you mentioned the use of absolute blacks. Have you found that using absolute black comes out differently in printing than on the computer? I did an image once that had a pure black background but the characters were outlined with a nearly black color like RGB(2, 0, 2) or something like that. When we printed it out the outlines came out a nice glossy black color but the background was really dull, a flat black...even though the colors were only slightly off you could definitely tell where the lines were. Just wondering if that's something to look for in your line of work or if it even comes up since you're possibly working in CMYK instead of RGB.

Since everything we do ends up on paper our main concern is CMYK. RGB really doesn't do much in that department, since the gamuts are different and it highly depends on the softwares tranlsation tables.
Your also very dependent upon the proofing printer you've used. Most of the just apporximate PRESS-CMYK, so I can't really tell you what happend in your case. However, colors that look great on screen, or colors that look the same on the screen oftentimes will print differently on paper. So the issue of knowing your percentages is very important. Especially when painting with pencils.
Chapel says he multiplied over the image, however the method used doesn't really matter, I eye-dropped the values and they match Pshop Black within <10%, which on a heavy dot gain paper will end up black. On this Image I would like to have the eyes be one of the focal areas, thus I want it to be the only area with a really nice thick black. Chrome/Metal does not have to have a darkest area within it. It should have high contrast, however for our purposes using BLACK destroys the cell-illusion and detracts from the eyes. I wish I could explain this more clearly.
Anyhow. Hope this makes sense in some deranged way.

PS: Most of this could easily be pointless, since the margins of error in comic-printing are abhorent... |

Hey Chris, I see what you are getting at as far as focal points and all. Makes sense now. If you noticed though in my example the places I applied the darker tones was to break up the forms more than just add contrast. So, since you wouldn't want to to use a darker tone then I'd suggest brightening the other tones surrounding. The main thing I see is everything blends together in the metallics.
By the way.. I know what I did pretty much turned out to be black.. I just wanted to say I didn't pick it on purpose.
Something off topic... but do you open your email daily and have like 40 requests to color things? Each week my email is starting to get bombarded a little more.

O' wow! That coloring job is fabulous!
But I have suggestions (please dont hate me
-The right wing (her left)seems like its curving back instead of forward. Do you know what I mean? Another way of putting it is it seems like she has two right (her right) wings.
-Her neck also seems too far back or to long or something.
-the way her torso is turned and the angle/perpective on her breasts is funky. Seems like it should be a more profiled view. Right now it looks like her breasts are on her side.
I hope I didn't offend you by giving my suggestions. Take it or leave it these are humble offerings.

`What sort of people live about here?' asked Alice.
`In that direction,' the Cat said, waving its right paw round, `lives a Hatter: and in that direction,' waving the other paw, `lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.'
`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad...' |

GLUTAMINE Thanks! BC#7 didnt turn out all that great but were hoping to do better next time. BTW, Issues 1-6 for E.V.E are out although I guess the trade will be out in a couple of months collecting them all with a bunch of extras!
CHAPEL Cool, glad I finally made sense. Im definitely considering tweaking the metal further, however I have some other ideas that I hope will make it a bit more readible. And Im not ruling out darkening the shadows, its just that I opted the first time not to for the reasons mentioned earlier. Again, these are things that I very consciously think of when I do pieces, so this isnt lost on me. However, the final test is always the audience, and if enough people have trouble reading a particular area of the piece, than rethinking it may not be bad. As said before I do agree that the metal is reading a bit difficult, but the reasons for that are varied.
We do get a lot of email. Not to mention readers writing regarding SoulSaga/E.V.E ProtoMecha. Thats why Im usually behind in emails
JONATHAN Im not offended at all. As a matter of fact you nailed the very things we noticed. However, the story behind this piece is quite interesting, in terms of revisions, layouts, etc. that we might include in the trade to give people a sort of behind the scenes look. I have to discuss that with Ale and make sure hes comfortable with that. Also, as mentioned before I wont be tweaking this any further for now, since there may be some changes coming and we might not be using this piece at all.

We have Epson Stylus Pros, and a Canon BJC-5100. Personally I recommend Epson over Canon.

Good Lord! What would those pencilers do without you?! It's amazing to me how much better the pic looks with the coloring. I bet my crazy co-worker designers(from presto studios) are all drooling over this thing. HAHA! |

Does she have some sort of crazy bungie-cord spine? How the hell does she stand like that? You'd think she'd be crumpled into a ball and dead if she were that flexible...

Now I'm curious. Since E.V.E. is your character. You must have some concept sketches drawn by you. Want to post a few? Or are you going to put some in the TPB?

SERA - I've got some sketches, but I'm not terribly happy with them. I was thinking that for the trade I would sit down and draw/paint a pin-up or something, in a style that I just did on a Final Fantasy piece, but I'm not sure if I will find the time..
BUTTLE - I had nothing to do with the spine ...and yea.. she's a robot - that's the ticket.

Thanks, it's pretty a stylized version of metal, though.
Yup, we're offering posters. You can get both of them very shortly via our site at www.storm-works.com or you can ask to order the E.V.E poster from your local comic retail shop. They should have no problem ordering them. If you're interested in a SoulSaga Poster, then you'll have to get it through us since it isn't being offered anywhere else.
