hi all

After seeing the work you guys did a while back, I got inspired to start drawing / painting again.

Crit all you want, don't be too rough tho, this is only after having the tablet for 2 hours, and my first color for almost 7 years.

The original sketch was done by Ferret and the coloring by me . She asked me to say that it was pretty rough, but I wont, because she's always putting her work down.

Ah crap, looks I said it anyway.

I'm not going for a super realistic look or a cartoony look, guess it's kinda middle of the road.

Aaaanyway....

Toodlepip,

ducky.

Hullo, ducky. ;}

Since you want the crit on the coloring job, and not the art (though I do like the griffin, and think it's quite cool) I would have to say, all in all, it's not bad. I like the natural colors you have, and the lighting seems consistent, but the poor dear is a little...unremarkable. Griffins are rather feisty and tempermental critters, and usually very intense individuals to avoid. For this reason, I'd have to suggest that you get more brave with your tones and hues. Make the bird jump out from the page. What this pic needs is contrast. A little glint off the feathers here and there for sunlight. A few deep shadows in appropriate places.

My biggest suggestion would be to look up a nice hawk. They usually have the lovely brown plumage and golden beak that would be perfect here. Find a really good profile picture, and study the lighting. Study the contrast, the color and the texture. Then try highlighting and darkening your griffin based on these observations. I think it'll vastly improve your piece.

But, this is a good start. Now go get brave and come back and show us the new version, if you want to continue this piece. ;}
