Nice work everyone!
I got a few problems with the original though. Well basically after reading Andrew Loomis's figure drawing book, I think that your lines are too similar.
Book located at: www.antsin3d.com/loomis/
Loomis says that having variation in thickness, (not neccesarily tone for your comic purposes B&W) is a good way to suggest form and weight. For example a light and delicate form such as a nose, would have a light delicate line. A heavier and more muscular form like the thighs would have a heavier and thicker line to suggest bulk! Capiche?
Well you have done it to some degree with the head but I have problems with the fact that so many of the lines are thick and bold but dont neccesarily give a viewer a hint of the form, weight and 3d presence of an object.
Anyone else agree? You could also say that this similarity in line, while not defining forms, makes the clothing look cluttered and confusing. Put simply because there is not enough definition between forms.

Oh I have studied Loomis religiously for easily the past 12 years. I'm aware of my choice in line thickness and how it goes against some people's preferences.
You just have to trust me when I say that it is simply my preference to make my lines thick and similar. I am what is called a "heavy-handed" artist. Always have been.
My only suggestion is to not take everything that you read to be The Word (even when it comes to the masters). Loomis was truly talented and waaaaaayyyy ahead of his time, but I would only suggest using his knowledge as a basis to build your own skills. It's your art; attack it anyway you like. Make mistakes. Learn. Keep trying.
Thanks for posting his book up, though. It will be a vaulable resource for those artists that have never seen it.
Until next time,
Matt
And thanks again to everyone who has colored that image. We are currently looking for someone to color the comic book, so anyone who might be interested can send me an email. We already have a publisher, so it is a guaranteed book (and an excellent opportunity to get your work out there).

Greeting everyone. I am the creator of the comic that rattmouth is doing the artwork for. So if you are interested in submiting color samples, you can also feel free to send samples to me.
I love all the coloring that is posted here and I hope that someone will be interested in the position being offered. If you have any questions, please e-mail me and I will do my best to answer them.

what are you a loomis preacher, collisimo? hehe i agree with you, but dont think its needs to be done in every instance.
with colorists like freddio who needs varied line thickness? even though he seems to put the majority of his effort towards the boobs eheh

Hmmm...
I'm not saying its ultimately right! or that I'm a preacher of it! :P
Just dont think that your style of linework suggests enough 3d form. Oh well just a point that I wanted to bring up.
I agree that line variation is only useful sometimes as Loomis says it himself.
"Line is something to turn to when your drawings are dull."
I think that this is an occaision in which you should give it a little more thought.
HEY SYNJ!: Freddio has done a nice colouring and I chatted with him on ICQ 'bout it. It is more of a painterly effect and even painted over the lines. Not a typical comic book colouring. But I am refering to the linework as a stand-alone. It of course can be fixed with colouring and 'shading' such as the examples here.

collisimo: It is really a style preference. Rattmouth clearly made this to be legible as a concept design and to be colored. Frankly, when I color this is the kind of linework I like to have. It leaves alot to be interpreted by the colorist instead of having everything already layed out with shading. |

So in case anyone wants to see what the updated character design looks like, I have posted it in the Work In Progress forum.

Is it bad forum etiquette to post cross links like this. If it is, just call me an ignorant hick and excuse it.

BAH!
Chapel: I know its a style preference! I mean ff's! I can read what Rattmouth said to me!
"having everything already layed out with shading."
I didnt mean that. I meant as a STAND-ALONE piece, the linework IMO does not suggest or define clear enough forms. Of course you dont want the linework to be shaded. However it would help it as a comic to have a more definitive form with its linework. I guess it would then help the colorist some more...
Anyway..sorry bout the "ff's" but I got peeved..

Funny thing is thats an unlikely typo. Considering that 'A' is nowhere near 'U'...
Maybe he did mean that. If so, wrong Forum!

A topic that contains the word "scabies" shouldn't get this many replies. It isn't right. |
