actually, bic pens have quite a tonal range. i would try a more opaque ink pen for more of a challenge.

What are your intentions with these "art-rapes"?

Is it to score some easy points in school?

You would learn much more by drawing from life or even photos.... just a thought.

have you ever used Prisma Markers? if not, get yourself a pack of the cool or french greys.....you'll LOVE em...they have different tonal graduations.....10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 90%, and black.

the french greys are a bit brown or orangey....the cool greys are blueish......i did this sucka with the cool greys...

it kinda sucks, its very old. but it is the way most people do those cool design studies.

Just curious for future reference here, Shousetsu, but what's a generally acceptable size for dial up users before it gets pretty expensive?

Flinthawk, it's not expense generally, but load time. Waiting for 6 1mb pictures to load for 30 minutes is ridiculous. File sizes less than or equal to 200kb is about as big as I'll let load.

Heh, for some reason when he made that comment I was thinking back to someone who mentioned that they pay by the amount of data they download...I just pulled an 'all-weekender' here for work and I'm about to go home to get my first sleep in two days so I'm a little out of it. So at least I know that my 100kb average for images I post is within a reasonable range, thanks. I just know that even on a DSL here at work I sometimes skip entire threads because the pic won't load within a minute or two...others should probably take note and size down their stuff.

how can you call that a 'concept pic'?! you copied it exactly! this image was posted on here by gontaro, just a couple of months ago. i'm sure he appreciates you tracing off his hard work.

Well I wont wait for things over 400 k to load, unless its something I need to see. Ive been sitting here for 2 minutes just waiting so I can start scrolling, then the images that have loaded are either broken because my modem cant handle them or have loaded 2" of each.

Even as I typed this and read all the posts the images still arent even 10% done. That gives a general idea of whats to big for dial-ups. (I have no choice, where I live we dont get Cable/DSL and never will get it)

i read every word of his post, and 'concept' does not mean taking something and tracing it. that has no value for learning or otherwise, and i'd be mad as hell if i was vortx or gontaro, regardless of whatever kind of disclaimer he decides to add.

Well. The funny thing that he even copied signature. The one on robot and on skateboarder have "JCH" written on it. and On robot there was even smaller signature that was desturbed by compression, and he even get that out too. ) Bzz...
Well, honestly I don't have anything against him as long as he says that originally it was done by someone else. That what he did. And the he should leard is not our concern IMHO. If he asked what is the best way to learn, we could tell 'em couple hints.

Hmmmm... let's not start a flaming frenzy. He's not claiming originality for either of these pieces. Read what he says carefully, it's hard to tell exactly what he means (he's showing some difficulty with typing clear English). And he's a 16 year old who probably doesn't realize just how badly this practice is disliked here. He just did some copies of a couple cool works, possibly for practice, as I'm sure we all have in our past. Maybe I'm being naive, but I'd like to believe that this kid is just practicing, trying to get feedback on his pen technique, and not trying to show off or fool us. I admit, it's very tempting to immediately cast blame or hurl insults. I suppose it's up to Feng and Gontaro, if they see this, on how this should be treated. In the mean time, let's try to remain civil.

P.S. If I am wrong, which I may well be, well then... i'll be pretty upset myself.

P.P.S. QUOTE: dude it is how u learn to draw by lookin @ other drawings adn tryin to mimic what they drew, i draw from photos all the time! and scoring points in school? i cpould care less ...

Read before you post, guys.

No, I guess you didn't read the post, jeffery...nowhere does he even mention that these are even concepts, he says they're drawings from concept pics. Regardless, it doesn't make things any better, just don't go making things worse than they are because you didn't take the time to read what was written.

That said, the better thing to do would be to suggest that he do some original work, be it studies from life or his own orinigal drawings since this forum as a whole isn't exactly impressed with studies of other works.

I'm not sure what the original artists would think of this thread but I for one think that copying is a form of flattery...and this after I used to yell at my little brother when he'd copy my pics until I learned this little lesson...perhaps if I hadn't yelled at him he'd still be drawing and might've been quite good. It's up to them whether or not they approve of people doing this kind of thing with their art but personally no money is being made off this stuff, it's not going to tarnish my reputation, and Merlin said nothing that claims these as his own concepts so no apparent harm done. It's not like he'll get a job with pen drawings like this *cough* Gabe Reiser *cough*...heh. What do you care that he's 'getting points' in school. We all know that, thanks to technology such as the internet and other forms of communication, cheaters are found out really quick.

That said, I'll restate my opinion, drawing from other artists is fun practice and there're things to be learned but I wouldn't post them here if you're looking for favorable responses.

???

Did any of you not see that he explains where each of the concepts comes from with each pic. Sure I'm not nearly as impressed since I know these are just copies but I didn't see one comment from him claiming that these are original pieces. Read a little next time...

and Merlin, you'll honestly learn more and learn it better if you start drawing from life before doing stylized work...this I found out the hard way.

What a way to make someone feel welcomed by being assholes (those of you who flamed him for ripping without credit). As others said, he said that they are copies of whatever. It is a way to learn, and I am sure all of you have done so in the past. I have, and still do. I don't post that stuff, but hey I know how it's unliked.

I know what you're saying man, just hoping to point out that we could be a little more constructive when getting guys like this...that way we'll have a few less Mongoose's in the world (yea, I did a search and read up on the guy when I started following the forums back in August).

Maybe we should do this good cop, bad cop thing on these tracers more often

jeffery,

Dude, he was saying that it was a concept pic of someone else's... not his own.

I don't understand why some people here are jumping so hard on this guy. I've drawn tons of pictures from this forum. The artwork here is inspiring, especially feng's and a couple other veterans around here. Why the hell would any one of them care if he sketches a couple of their drawings.

I personally suck at drawing anything except straight rip-offs. I keep trying, and maybe I'm getting better (maybe not) but I draw because I enjoy it, it's relaxing, and it's cool. If someone like Merlin wants to post stuff like this, let him. Sure you can throw in a comment like, "that's neat and all, but I think you should draw from life, blah, blah, blah." If feng or anyone else who's artwork was re-drawn has a problem, I'm sure he'd take it down, no harm done. Some people just seem to have some major "buttons" that get pushed at even the smallest sight of a tracer/ripper.

Lets all just get along, have some fun, and look at some art. Geez.

flinthawk, re: "concept" i know what you're saying and what he posted. but you can't say that an image (from feng, or whoever) serves as a "concept" for your image if you just go and trace it. whatever your opinion, i think thats a wrong thing to do, and the concept of copyright exists for a reason.

people who think they can get away with this stuff actually do cause damage, and down the road, who knows what work a tracer might try to sell. mongoose on this forum is a perfect example: he stole $1000s worth of proprietary artwork from a design company and resold it to unsuspecting customers. at least by discouraging your brother from tracing, you stopped him from becoming a plagiarist.

in the end, maybe this rude reaction will serve as a rude awakening for merlin and put him on the right track towards actually learning how to draw. sijun.com is certainly a good place to start.

ps. stop telling me what i read and what i don't read.

OK, dude, Merlen, whatever, the Skateboarder pic does NOT seem to belong to you... So unless your name IS NOT Gontaro (!!!), you simply STOLE it !!!!
the original image:

P.S. i beg my sincere pardon if it is indeed Gontaro using another nick,... but putting another name on the finished work...

Have fun !
