Thanks for the help, I'm a little new to this and slow for my age.

The painting took about 8 hours in two sittings.

She is pretty isn't she. She is my executive assistant. It's a rough life.

Yes, I did have a section in the Painter 6 Wow Book. I use Painter for the majority of my digital work.

Thanks for the comment on my web site. It is my first and a work in progress. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Hey, I'm glad you made it to the forum. I was honored to have lost to you in that art contest two months ago. :] You're an inspiration for all artists who see ya, so keep the chin up.

For this painting-her face is really nice. Her body is dead though. I don't know how else to say it beyond that it looks like a lively young lady's head stuck on a dieing body. Nice pic, keep it up, we can use more great artists here!

BTW, I use a variant of your pencil variant described in your Strange High House for most of my digital sketches and layout now. I guess I should say thanks!

I agree with you about Painter. I prefer it myself. Once you've created some fast great brushes in Painter, trying to paint in Photoshop just isn't quite the same. Hey, I use Photoshop too, couldn't do without it. But Painter...

hey seeg,
I've just recently seen your work and was blown away (when you won the monthly compo on in-depth). Excellent painting you have there, it has a very rich feeling to it.

Nice that you've made a site too, you have done a huge amount of good work.
Personally, after looking through your site, I find your work with traditional mediums most interessting (now I mean the overal general impression, not as every picture). The digital ones has a kind of more glossy and fantasy kind of look. Even the colors and motifs are very different. Your oil paintings has a bit more of that classic look. sorry, just rambling, welcome to the forum, nice to have you here

I see everyone has commented on this model, but I was going through your site and thinking, all of these models are gorgeous . . . I think you have some explaining to do

Your work is top notch, and I think your tutorial on your site is excellent. I agree with Joachim - there is something about your traditional medium work that really stands out. Is it a coincidence that you point mostly brunettes?

I can't critique your art but regarding your website, I think you laid it out well, with the links to back, content, and embedded sections always visible in each section. Sticking to one colour was great too, because among other reasons, it keeps the layout solid and as a background to what is being showcased: your art. But, and this is a matter of personal taste, the font you used is . . . I think that font would work better with light yellows/beiges, it reminds my of papyrus, and with the blue it looks like a tech and 'cool' (not just temperature sense) look is being applied to more of a classic/sketchy font.

Thank you all so very much for the positive feedback. Thank you for looking at my web site. I hope to post more new works as I finish them. I do tend to paint mostly brunettes when I am oil painting. There is a more classical feel to them and they sell faster than blonds. My Assistant looked at the posts and also thanks you for the compliments.

Like everyone else, I LOVE your work! I have a couple questions if you dont mind. Do you use any mediums when you paint in oil...like Liquin? Do you use linseed oil and turpenoid?? And if so to what degree, do you have your own formula of mixing amounts? How do you prepare your surface, and what do you paint on??
I also saw that for Saffire you look for artists with great understanding of the figure, and good traditional skills...how true is that...you dont need to see any PhotoShop or Painter colorings in portfolios?? Most game companies seem to want photoshop artists first and foremost, and the figure comes later. I personally believe it should be the other way around...

Thanks for looking and the questions.

I do use a little liquin. Right now I have been using some Gamblin or Graham painting medium. I do not use very much. I pour out a few drops on my palette and dip my brush it it occasionally. I do not thing my paint with any type of turpenoid or thinner. It tends to compromise the paint film somewhat.

I paint on either linen canvas or Masonite panels. I paint my smaller things on masonite generally. I buy preprimed canvas. It is primed with lead white oil and is rather expensive. I use regular old gesso for my masonite. I usually put on two coats using a paint roller and rolling until the gesso starts drying. When the first coat no longer feels cool to the touch, I apply the second coat. I do not sand the surface.

It is true that I look for good artists first. Painter and photoshop are only tools. I can teach tools but teaching how to make a good picture is much harder. I teach painting at the university and hire my three or four best students every year. Artist first tools second.

seeg, why do you buy pre-primed canvases?

It is mostly because I am lazy. The amount of work that goes into priming a canvas that is raw is extensive if you are using Flake White priming. Pre-primed canvas in a roll eliminates alot of busy work. You do need to make sure that you are buying good canvas and getting what you pay for. I use Fredrix canvas.
