I was very, very bad at work today. I was sitting on the couch, painting a picture in acrylics & minding my own business, when this new girl (who talks about NOTHING but partying & doing E) came along and sat down beside me. We had a brief conversation...It went like this:

Her: What are you doing?
Me: Painting.
Her: What are you painting?
Me: A rat.
Her: Yeah, I can see that. Why are you painting a rat?
Me: I like rats.
Her: I hate rats. They carry disease.

EDITORIAL COMMENT: It was at this point that I decided to do something very, very mean. But ONLY if she mentioned doing drugs. I was going to be really nice if she didn't mention drugs.

Me: Yeah. I have three rats, and I'm still trying to figure out which one gave me syphilis, which gave me warts, and which gave me bubonic plague.
Her: How do you get the colours so weird like that?
Me: Weird?

(Can you see where this is going?)

Her: Yeah. Weird. All gray and swimmy. It looks like a photo far off, but close to, it's all misty.
Me: Lots of water.
Her: It looks like what I saw last night on acid.
Me: Oh...really...?

And then I painted on her. I just took my brush, loaded with grayish-red paint, and wiped it down her arm. She jumped up so fast that her sweater, which was tied around her waist, flipped up and covered itself in paint. So it went from being a white sweater to being a...very dirty white sweater.

She looked at me with this...expression of utter shock and disgust. Then she started CRYING about the sweater. So I had to promise to take it to the dry-cleaners for her. I hope they get the paint out.

I also had to be really nice for the rest of the night. I even bought her dinner.

Anyway. That was MY day at work. The painting turned out really well, though. I'd scan it, but it's too big, and I'm too lazy to stitch it together in pieces.

I was just really sick of hearing about her drugs. I mean...seriously. It's acid this, ecstasy that, marijuana the next thing, all day long. So I decided to paint on her if she mentioned drugs during the conversation about my painting. Sort of a...mean little bet with myself.

Sure enough, she had to say my painting reminded her of an acid trip. *G* So I painted on her! Heh!

But did you apologise?...That's not that bad. I've seen girls do worse. What is bad is that she cried...
What do you do for your work then??

Ive noticed Socar has a strong interest in drugs, but I do not think she has ever practiced any substances.

You're right, Bradford...I've never used any drugs. Not the sort that you get without a prescription, anyway. I know too many people who do, though. And I KNEW too many people who DID, as well.

I did apologize, neebhore--profusely. It was never my intention to harm the sweater. I dropped it off at the dry-cleaner, and I've got my fingers crossed.

As for what I do...I'm in PR. It's very boring. I also do freelance illustration, but that's another story, entirely.

Yep....

i totally sympathise. I have had to start a job in a bank recently. The people there are quite sound but i am constantly obvious of my difference from them. I don't feel superior in fact inferior. Eg today the geezer who sits next to me was raving about a f*ing beer bong (that was being featured on Radio 1, prime time.(what is the world coming to?)) He was happy enough but i was just thinking " what the f*k?"
I cant seem to raise my enthusiasm for conversation with, well, most people. And so here i am typing away...
I am REALLY woried that if i cannot find work that is creative that i will have to do this work indefinately. Ive only lasted a month so far! jeeez
When i leave i have such an incredible feeling of release (its almost worth working just for that) Everything looks so, well, beautiful outside the office.

I just had to get that off my chest too.

Aim for the face next time, if she persists to do it again.

You are the one Socar!!!

But I wouldn't leave your jacket or other clothes unatended. Also taste if your coffee has strange flavours...like...errr...well, you know.

If she had been smart enough she should have asked you to sign her painted arm, and leaving it unwashed until the *not so faraway day* when your paintings will be trillions worth.

PlantMan: sometimes I feel like you do, but I know I'll always have to keep the job I have now (you know, once you acquire too many responsabilities: wife, daughter, house, etc...) as the balance has bent to the "family-money-comfortability" side, instead of the "artistry-self realisation-inner peace" one. I surrendered, which is not so bad when you see your daughter's happy face everyday.
