I like Dickey Wagner. I recommend Tristan and Parsifal, not the loud Ring stuff (ride of the valkeries) There is a lot of visual material there. Arthur Rackham did a series of great ink and watercolor illustrations for the Ring cycle, available from Dover. A lot of early American Illustrators talked fondly of having the collection in their youth.

I did want the eye to go black. This is before the fateful night in act 2. The sun is setting, just before the curtain rises. She is Irish.

I am liking Enayla�s and Isric�s softer images from the usual diet. Wasn�t there someone whining about girls in white dresses and pretty stuff being real art? Well, if you are still out there, I hope this is pretty enough. If not, just hit ctrl-u and crank it up, there, much more artsy (Speaking of, I have known art directors who idea of art direction is exactly that.)

I have taken pains to correct this image for the PC world. If it looks blown out and green, it should not.

man, i love how you use the maroon/browns for the shadows. i'm at the stage where i start with black in the shadows, and i have to fight it back to a believable tone. i guess i'll learn my lesson one of these days. looking at your images sure helps to get the idea to sink in though, thanks, and keep posting. :P

I just picked up a book of Sargent's works yesterday, and more than ever I can see his influence in your work. Just incredible. You certainly are one to look up to. (but then again, I suppose you've been told that before. )

Really nice Mr. Mullins. The rendering on the figure is excellent. My own personal preference would want to add a blue overtone to the pic and mostly to the background to bring out the brilliance of the orange light peeking through. Thats just me though. I'm not familiar with the sources of your inspiration on this picture. Great pic none of the less.

This is beautifull. Exactly the sort of stuff I'm trying to move towards. On my backdrop it goes.
The darkness of the eyes works well. Infact funnily enough it reminds me of one of the characters in David Zindell's excellent Requiem for Homo Sapiens novels. Katherine the Scryer, a 'visionary' who has taken her own eyes in order to better see with her inner-eye.
I'm not sure I entirely like the sketchyness of the background. It's a bit too undefined to really be one with the rest of the image. The top left works better as there is more definition.
What I'm wondering is how much you let yourself be inspired by music. Does it invade your commercial work as well as it does your personal portfolio?
I just posted an image largely inspired by music in the Work in Progress gallery. Although it's not based on the classical genre, I'd love to hear your comments on it.

Spooge, first of all, thanks for mentioning me. It was nice to hear that I'm now known for a softer feel in my pictures .
Anyway, this picture reached out and plucked something in me. The lighting you chose has an otherworldy dream feel to it that I am trying to acheive.
I am really enjoying the style and the absolute, pure emotion in this picture.

Did you paint this on a black background? btw this is to anyone.. do you know how to change the default grey color in photoshop to black? It's hard to get the darks right with a light background.

Yup, M got it on the head. I sort of wish at little of her eye could be seen-shadows in that light are rarely pitch, err, brown. :] And as always, it's beautiful. You're the only other artist I know who listens to stuff like Wagner(you ever hear Tristan with Kirsten Flagstaff? I can sample in my LP sometime...). Bach is the obvious choice for structured painting(the baroque pieces). I also like Grieg.

Although I am very short of time, I will try to reply to this as thoughtfully as possible. I very much enjoy seeing this type of work from you. It seems your overall painting style has taken many aspects from the Old Masters, one particular area being the sepia tone. For images like this (as well as your pirate entering the house, etc) the sepia tone really gives it a serene environment; one that is lacking in many modern paintings today. This overall feeling is what I believe sets you apart from the rest of the digital painters today.

I have one suggestion, if you ever feel so inclined. My suggestion is this (for experimentation only): If you are to come up with a fairly typical composition (for example, a battle scene), then instead of having the camera angle looking at the action from a typical perspective, take the perspective down to one of the fighter's toes, for example, and only paint what that toe would see. I think pushing the perspective aspect of images may not be overall attractive, but they really add to the variety in composition. Just thought you may want to try a few more "unorthodox" views some time just to play around with it.

[Edit: Just to add to this...although I am not particularly fond of Wagner, orchestra is always great. Personal favorites are the 5th and 7th of Beethoven (performed by the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra) and a variety of other oldies: Strauss, Vivaldi, Handel, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach]
Overall, great job; keep at it.
