just thought I'd throw this up. really quick concept (for me at the moment anyway). drawing took about 20 min. colours maybe a good 1.5 hours. developing and playing around with the char maybe another 1.5
still not satisfied with it, but anyway.
I was interested in what poeple thought in terms of, is it too loose.
And for the people who do this sort of thing for a living in games etc. is the time I spent on it too much. into this I suppose goes, is it too much considering the finish it has at the moment. I would add that this is not "inspired work" I'm forcing myself to draw and do stuff when I don't feel like it so much. as opposed to only really doing stuff when the mood strikes.
It's a bit shiny for my liking really. I would have liked to make the skin less so. but it's hard to make it all work with the size the sketch was.
I might post the development sketches as well. but I don't have time to scan them atm, and it's probably not worth it anyhow.

I like this little guy.
Your style of drawing is cool
I think you could(if you want) take his armor to the next level as far as some sort of decoration. Maybe some sort of insignia on his chest plate and ontop of his helmet. I duno, maybe Im wrong.
All in all I like it. That is a good thing to do, forcing yourself to draw when you are not in the mood. It will probably double your rate of progression.
I would actualy suggest slowing down though so I can catch up. hehe only kidn
seeyas on ICQ and around the forum.

hehe, I like the little cute critter. The colours on the body armour are nice. These are taking elements of a Liquid! style and a painting style and mixing them together to great effect.
There are a couple of things that bother me a little about the character that I think you could change. The first one would be the body proportions. Granted it is a cute character and all but look at the size of those little legs. Considering the size of the arms and the armour, the guy just doesn't look like it is going to be able to support it's own body weight. I think you could get away with the legs if the calfs and thighs were a bit bigger and more developed.
The other thing that bothered me a little was that you had the top half heavy armoured but not so the bottom half. Granted the guy is close to the ground and can easily protect himself but if you put hot tar on the ground, it would look like it would burn right through his little shoes. Maybe if you develop these a little, along with some legging or something, it could help to counter act the weight problem mentioned above.
Just a couple of comments.

Looks like he could contract his limbs into his armour and roll away...
I like it! I just think there are too many heavy lines. |

Hey there Rinaldo, nice design, but for games work I'd certainly be looking to either belt these out faster, or go for more finish in that time frame.
Suggestions:
1) Spend a lot more time with the pencil, doing a heap of tiny, quick sketches. It only costs you 5 mins to throw them away if they turn out bad at that stage, but there's no amount of coloring that's gonna fix a poor design later.......
2) If you want more polish, good ink is the key. Again, take a little more time over it at that point, before you scan and after (touching it up). Clean ink work is also faster to color.
3) Add textures. I keep a library of textures, like rough & corroded metals, for just this purpose. A subtle rough layer ("multiply" or "hard light" in PS) over either the skin areas or the metal armour couls make all the difference.
4) Use reference. When you're trying to draw, but don't really feel like it, and the art director is breathing down your neck, and the producer says "Hey, just draw ANYTHING, I dooon't care as long as it's REALLY COOL", then you need all the help you can get. Paintings from the mediaeval era have great characters like this, and also give you a pile of great ideas for armour, weapons, decorations, clothing, boots, and so on.
Hope that helps!!!!
Cheers, A.
PS: I _LOVE_ your pic in the mech thread. SICK! ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

Good picture! Looks very much like Brian Froud's style. I got this bizzare goblin book for xmas by Froud and this picture would fit in very well.
Looks great! |

Blitz-actuialy, in all the development drawingd I did the armour had some ornamentation. dunno why it didn't get put on here. I did this too small again, need to make it a fisidhed drawing nad less of a sketch. then i can put more of the details into it.
Matt Elder- Thanks, good points about the plausability. I sort of bombed out in that sense here. the legs work from a design perspective, but not in terms of reality.
I'm not sure if I want to go plausability over cool here. but, I'll have to play around with them to make it a bit better in both respects.
what I moght do is make him into a special role that explans (hehe, read: lame excuse) his anatomy
TheMilkMan-well, it's not 3 hours on this pic. more 1.5 really. I spent about 30 min screwing with some sftuff that was a waste of time in terms of the colouring. the other 1.5 was spent thinking aobuthe design of him and doing little sketches. but if that is still too much then I suppose I'll have to go faster. I think it is a bit too long. probably the wrong priorities in terms of what I spend the time on as well. thanks
Jaymo- thanks. yeah, the lines are too thick. I will stop doing this I promise I do a little sketch and can't be bothered tracing it up and doing it really well. I just do a little marker sketch and go in with the ink. the sketch was very small.
A-thanks, good advice. I do a lot of little sketches. mostly making him fit the image in my head. trying to make sure that he works from all angles etc.
I'll add some texture to my next one ad see how it turns out.
Glad you liked the mech
Codexier-hehe, yeah it has a lot of Froudian qualities I love that guy. his design on the labrynth and the dark crystal made a huge impact on me as a little kid. Thanks.
AdezJ
Hmmm...so I'll have to speed it up a bit. I think I could shave about half an hour of the colouring on something this simple. but I wan't the time to be representive of everything. stuff ups included. I might have to think about the way it gets coloured as well. I flat it like you would for a comic book, to allow for a good way to select areas etc. I'm not sure if this is a waste of time or not. probablt I could have gone without that here to a degree because of the simplicity. not sure. I'll have another go at it.
