this is something i did kind of as a gift to the guys behind one of my favourite mods... who knows, and maybe it'll help inspire them as they slave away on version 2?

i *do* need to point out that this is not an OFFICIAL q3f image, nor is it endorsed by them.

mind you, if it is, i'll be making one for every class. :D

is this a good idea? let me know.

i just can't resist being a pain in the donkey harharhar.

1. for wallpapers you do *not* do scanlines. why? if somebody makes scanlines at 800x600, and someone else sticks it on a 2048x1536 rez desktop, the result is not nice. goes the other way too.

2. the "typography" brings the quality down. the grey text breaks the image. try something more sharp and sleek.

3. too much blur makes baby jesus cry.

4. whats with the resolution anyway?

yadda dadda.

hey, i didn't say this wallpaper was perfect for *everyone*.

the reason for the scan-lines and blur is because of the subject matter. fans of q3f, which this wallpaper is made for, will understand and appreciate the stylistic choices i made.

as for scan-lines on various resolutions, i do keep that in mind. if i wanted this image to be for 2048x1536, i would of made a version that size. but for now, until i get a green light from the people behind q3f, i'll keep it at this resolution, which is what the picture came in.

and that's the size the original pic was. what? people can't deal with having a pixel width of solid colour around their wallpaper?

nothing wrong with that. matter of fact, sometimes it looks good. it leaves the user a good area to put thier icons and such. which is a part of creating wallpapers that most artists overlook.

but thank you for the crit, even tho i didn't ask for them, hence this thread being located in the "Gallery/Finished Work" area.

but just wait till i get the go ahead on the rest of them, i'll make sure to do one in that size just for you. k?

nothing can make me change my current selection of wallpapers, which compromise of this one by micke, one Dune related, and blank black desktop.

faust: you should fear, for i have one of those di gi charat ultracutie wps on my desktop.

thoughts on the q3f wp:

scanlines. sorry, but scanlines don't give everything an automatically techy feel that makes people spooge over your work. plus it has been done for a gazillion times before. same goes for the colordodging grid.

text. why is there so much text? why is the text in upper left corner bright blue? a better choice would've been something more fitting to the red and brown color scheme of the screenshot.

radial blur! ooh!

i know i know faust said these already, i'm just a stupid copycat (hee hee and a furry one at that)

why not post this on some quake art forum?

agree w/ kig

IMO: drop the grid background and the scanlines, reduce the text in favour of more pictures that you blend together.

btw if you HAVE to use scanlines then dont go for 1 pixel black one pixel white but choose grey values that are closer to each other, it looks better (as far as one can say that about scanlines- yuck!)

disclaimer: this is my personal opinion-

please remember that this wallpaper was tailor made for the people who would enjoy this most.

yes, i do realize that scanlines and colour dodge grids are indeed overused in our little community here, but not in their's. they still think it's nifty.

secondly, the reason for the text? to describe the character class. that's all.

third, the colour blue is used because if you look at the character, you'll realize he's from the blue team. and that hue is the standard blue colour used in the mod.

and lastly, it's not just a radial blur, if you look closer, you might be able to see one or two of the other images used in this piece as well, such as an overhead view of one of the maps (2forts to be more specific), which added to the feel of texture in the room the character is in, when in fact, the room he IS in, is mostly underside lighting and stainless steel.

there's also an image of high speed destruction hidden in the image as well, but that's subtle almost to the point of subconsious registry.

but hey, if it's not your bag, then don't use it for your desktop. it's all good.

the important thing is, i knew who my audience was, and i know what my audience liked, so that's what i went for. and for a piece like this, where the art is used to make a specific genre/sub-culture/demographic say 'wow, that's pretty cool'... that's what matters right?

if i did this *just* for myself, i would of left out the text, made the resolution different, and did a LOT more photomanipulation and iconography.

but it wasn't for me. it was a gift.

like i said, it's all good. it's art. i like it. someone else liked it. that's all that really matters.

right?
