I got me a new scanner and ummm... I really suck at this... anyone know the best way to scan lines? or know any usefull tutorials?
Yeah... armor and weapons are probably flawed... i didn't use references (all you Halo buffs can just shoot me now)... marine w/ AR is still in the works...
Critiques, Corrections(anatomy, lighting, ect...), General Advice, useless ramblings... Anything...

Sorry man that nobody's giving you a crit. Most people don't venture out into WIP section for some reason - nothing personal.
I'm still learning also, so this is just an opinion that's not worth much:
Good stuff:
- Shell casings are great - they show action and make the picture dynamic.
- Anatomical proportions look ok, but need some refinement..
- Lighting is somewhat consistent - which is good. If you know where the lighting is, it helps a lot in adding volume.
Stuff for improvement.
- Perspective is everything. The perspective is off on the main guy.
- Anatomy needs work - do a lot of reference sketches - forget about colouring and focus on sketching if you want them to be anatomically correct.
- Shading - biggest tip I ever got as a newbie was MORE CONTRAST!!!! It really livens up things, but don't get me wrong, there are some beautiful low contrast pieces out there, it's just doesn't fit right now.
- A Background - this makes or breaks a picture. With a background - lines are never needed (unless you're working with cartoons). I always start with crap scans and erase all the lines as I go.
More advance stuff:
- Body posture could a bit more dynamic to make it flow.
- Dynamic lighting. Lighting on gun would have two sources - the one on the left and the one coming out of the barrel - this gets tricky, but play around, I'm sure you'll get it .
Things I can't comment on:
- Texturing - I don't know enough about it, so I can't give you any advice, but I think it needs work..
Anyway good start. Keep on drawing. Draw wherever you can whenever you can and you'll dramatically improve. Drawing is a skill and can be learned. Most of all have fun! Good job and keep it up.

The two main things that bug me with the picture are the angle of the guys neck, and his left foot (to our right). With his head like that, kinda looks like someone broke his neck. As for his left foot... it it ends in a small circle to one side, kinda weird looking. Other than those two complaints, you mostly just need to work on the shading some more with more defined difference in value, I'm guessing you just used burn and dodge on that which doesn't show up too well.
Other than the guy in the backgrounds gun being a little wobbly, the design on the weaponry seems sound. keep drawing, not bad. |

Hey man, thanks for the comments on my stuff. I'm still learning, if you check out my paintings most of them got anatomical flaws. (for example, Japanese girl pic - head too big, Wei cool - knuckles are all out of wack)..
Anyway, just wanted to show you how I drew 4 years ago.
Anyway, I've only started drawing more recently, if you start now, I'm sure you'll be better than me by the next spring (or earlier).
Oh and useful tutorial's there's a book out there called drawing on the right side of the brain. It's really good. go to your library and try it out and you'll see some improvements almost instantly. You just gotta stick to it and you'll do well. |
